S56 mPT #4 - Playoff Preview

The playoff picture i am envisioning is a NOLA vs BUF matchup, that is going to see NOLA lose in game 7 in the second round.

Quebec City is finally picking up some speed and it's exciting for me. It prove that the team has what it take to make it out of the first round and most likely the second, if im honest.

I've been crazy busy with real world things for the past few weeks, so i honestly had no idea that there was a format change.
Some of my notes:
I feel like a boob for writing off Calgary. Good on them for locking up a bye and infinitely easier opponents.
I'm going to miss the Hamilton vs Edmonton rivalry, and the New Orleans vs Buffalo rivalry. Would the playoffs be the playoffs if Tom Wilson didn't cream someone in Pittsburgh?
Pretty cool that Atlanta is on track to make it to the dance. A lot less cool that they are going to be fodder for one of the superpowers. fingers crossed for them, though.
If 3 of the NHL's top 4 teams were Canadian, the salary cap would be sooo much higher. Hashtag escrow.

Blizz super sweep. 16-0

Maine Timber is taking revenge on the finals loss from last season and will again make it to the finals, but this time against Quebec City.
In the final, Maine will win in a 6 game series

My predictions for the SMJHL playoffs are that Vancover may steam roll it and win it with only a few loses as they have been very dominate this year. The other finalist may also be from the west. Im guessing Anchorage.

In the next ten games. The Minnesota Monarchs with win out. And the Winnipeg Jets will lose out. Creating a perfect storm where Minnesota makes the playoffs. Mark my words. It will happen.

I fully expect that Hamilton will get hot again and make a run for the cup this year.  There are a lot of good teams in the mix so it will not be a cake walk but if the regular season has been any indication, we are the best team in the league.

The playoffs are going to be pretty interesting when they come around. New Orleans typically performs well in the format. It looks like it'll be hard to beat Hamilton, but then again, nothing is for sure. I think people are focused on the East's Chicago and Hamilton too much, and they're forgetting how good Calgary, New Orleans, and Edmonton can be. I'd also place money on Texas for making a fun little cinderella run.

I honestly can't wait to see what happens.

With this reshuffle that is going to happen between the conferences, I have no clue on how these playoffs are going to shake out.  All I know if that my Specters have always found a way to win in the playoffs in the last couple of seasons.  I know with the loss of Jimmy Slothface, we may not have as much firepower up front, but we have a very solid defensive group and the best goalie tandem in the league.  No matter what happens, I know the Specters will do everything we can to fight for as many wins as we can.

I don't pay enough to attention to say who's strong enough of a squad to likely win it all, but I will say that it would be awesome to have divisional rivals end up meeting each other for the finals. So um my finals prediction is I hope that happens.

If the standings remain the way they are now, we’ll have the following 12 playoff teams:
HAM, CHI, BUF from Great Lakes
MAN, NEW, ATL from Atlantic
CGY, EDM, WPG from Northwest
NOLA, TEX, LAP from Southwest

With the way the standings look now, it looks like we’re going to have the following four division winners who will be awarded first round byes:
HAM, MAN, CGY, NOLA

TEX could catch NOLA in the next 6 games but I’ll assume for this that they don’t. In any case, that seems to be the only race in doubt at this point.

That leaves the 8 teams situated in the following matchups based on seeding:

1-CHI vs 8-WPG
Winnipeg just hasn’t quite fully arrived yet. The only team to make the playoffs with a losing record, Winnipeg has been the first beneficiary of the expanded playoffs set up. Their reward is facing a team with a claim to 2nd best team in the SHL. Third in points, but they’re in a buzzsaw of a division in the Great Lakes. I see Chicago handling Winnipeg without much difficulty. CHI in 5

2-BUF vs 7-LAP
This matchup got a lot more interesting with the Panther’s acquiring 1900 TPE Forward Jimmy Slothface at the deadline. Buffalo is not the same team that win the Challenge Cup last season as they had some key offseason departures. However, I don’t want to overact to the Slothface deal. Los Angeles had their flaws going in to the year and Buffalo still has a lot of weapons left over from their cup run. They finished 3rd in their stacked division but should still be in the discussion for the league’s 5 best teams. LAP still leaves a lot to be desired on the blueline, I don’t see them getting past a more well-rounded Buffalo team. BUF in 6

3-EDM VS  6-ATL
This is a matchup of two of the most interesting storylines in the SHL. Atlanta is a success story of an expansion team and it’s exciting to see them have early success. Edmonton is a really good team with a better team in their division. They play in arguably the toughest division not called the Great Lakes and they finished 2nd in the conference in points. I love Atlanta’s focus on defense in building their roster and it helps cover for them not having a goalie over 1000 TPE. I want to pick at least one upset and I think this one has the most potential. ATL in 7

4-TEX vs 5-NEW
I’ve said before that Texas is my favorite team that’s not Toronto. I like their logo and colors and I like the makeup of their roster. They’re pushing NOLA for the division title in the Southwest and they still only have one regressing player on their roster. They’ve got a bright future in Texas. On the other side, there is a lot to like about New England as well. They’re a fairly well rounded team and the emergence of Frans Eller in net has filled the only hole that this team really had. Still, I like Texas in this one but I think it can go the distance. TEX in 7

ROUND 2 matchups:
1-HAM vs 8-ATL
Prediction: HAM in 4

2- CGY vs 7-TEX
Prediction: CGY in 5

3-CHI vs 6-NOLA
Prediction: NOLA in 7

4-MAN vs 5-BUF
Prediction: BUF in 6

ROUND 3 Matchups:

1-HAM vs 4-NOLA
Prediction: HAM in 6

2-CGY vs 3-BUF
Prediction: BUF in 7

FINALS:

HAM vs BUF
HAM in 6
Probably boring to pick the best regular season team to win it all. I suppose the 'hottest take' that I have here is that the finals will be a Great Lakes division matchup. I do think that Buffalo is better than their record indicates and I just can't see how anyone will be able to upset Hamilton.

the most interesting test of competition in the upcoming postseason is the calgary dragons facing the east. while calgary has easily stacked up a runaway 16 point lead over the rest of the west and are easy favorites to make it out of the early rounds, they have a very small sample size against the top teams in the eastern conference. calgary holds winning regular season records against chicago, buffalo, and manhattan, but the best of two sample size doesn't tell us how calgary will fare in a seven game series. i expect a 7 game series between calgary and the 2-4 seeds in the east, but regular season results tell us hamilton will make short work of calgary in the playoffs.

Well I've been a bit MIA for a while now so don't really know the current landscape. But I am going to predict a Texas cup this year. It's gotta be our time now right? Right?

It's pretty disappointing to think that we in Maine had a chance at the division but let it slip away. This means that we almost certainly have to start in the play-ins again but its just a chance to pad some stats. I have faith that our amazing GM, CitzenofAdraa will get us back to the cup finals where hopefully the result is more in our favour.
