Graphs and rankings through IRL Dec 12th to Dec 30th
Last 10 Game Record: 2-8-0
Roast: The coming end of the season brings a sigh of relief to the San Franscisco Pride, who have endured an incredibly tough season in S57. They can start looking forward to the next season, and maybe a nice draft pick before that, as they will be on an upwards trajectory out of rock bottom. A nice surprise are two wins over Los Angeles - the victories over their California rival provided a nice boost to the morale of the team, and shows some flashes of what the future might hold for the Pride.
Last 10 Game Record: 2-8-0
Nham: Baltimore has been the epitome of a rollercoaster ride this season, first starting off well, free falling back down the standings, earning some points back up and then being dead in the water once more over the last little while. They hold one of the longer active losing streaks with 5 games without a win. Nat Emerson has been always relied on as the #1 defensive guy but also has picked it up this season by driving offense as well, leading all Platoon in points thus far this season.
Last 10 Game Record: 3-7-0
Roast: The Minnesota Monarchs haven’t quite played their 2nd part of the season as they hoped, with a 3-7-0 record in their last 10 games played, including two wins over the San Francisco Pride, and a shootout win over the Los Angeles Panthers on the back of Markus Tegernako. Minnesota falls behind the Seattle Argonauts in this power ranking (and in the standings), which is unfortunate as their goal this season was to stay close to Winnipeg - who have secured the third playoff spot in the Northwest division quite handily, doubling the Monarchs’ points with just a tenth of the season left.
Last 10 Game Record: 2-8-0
Nham: The slightly better of the Northwestern bottom duo, Seattle hasn’t had much to be particularly excited about in the inauguration+1 season thus far. While continuing to build out their roster with a long term perspective in place, the current SHL performance is about fine so far with no real ups and downs in terms of shooting success or goaltending performances. Thor Odinson is doing splendidly in their rookie season and could have potentially been considered for a Jesster Award were it not for a certain Hamilton anomaly.
Last 10 Game Record: 1-9-0
Roast: Can I get an oof for the Specters? A 1-9-0 record in the last 10 games is spooky, and not in a good way. With only a win over the San Francisco Pride as the only bright spot, the future of this team looks quite dark. Management has recognized that, and players are being shipped out for draft picks and prospects, signalling the start of a rebuild period for the Specters. Aleister Cain retiring hands the crease to Olli Saarinen Jr., and he’s going to have to endure for a while until the Specters get spooky in the future.
Last 10 Game Record: 4-6-0
Nham: This season is probably the start of the upward trend that the Barracuda see themselves experiencing. Actually that’s not true, the moment they moved past being 0-50 it was all gravy for them and they continue to add more and more active talent to their team to the point that they stand clearly above the rest of the other weaker/rebuilding teams. Their last 10 games is indicative of this, having won against Seattle, Baltimore, Minnesota as well as an overtime win against New England. It’ll still be a few more seasons before they make any significant noise but they’re no longer the punching bag of the East. Maybe more like a dummy that fights back because they do have the worst team GAA over the last 30 games out of any team so far.
Last 10 Game Record: 3-6-1
Roast: With a 3-6-1 record for their last 10 games played (by the time the data was gathered for this power ranking) the home ice hopes for the New England Wolfpack has faded away, with the Inferno creating a gap ahead of them for the 2nd seed in the Atlantic. Considering their roster, that’s not so bad a thing as the young guns get more seasoning and growth, and the Wolfpack should be biding their time for a few seasons down the road. Wins over Calgary, Seattle and Chicago show that they can have flashes of brilliance, and previews what the team will be able to do consistently in the future. This playoff experience can only be a good thing for a team so young
Last 10 Game Record: 3-5-2
Nham: With this holiday season, there can only be one team that’s crowned the most generous of all and that has to be Los Angeles who has been giving away points to teams who don’t even need it. San Francisco got 4pts, Seattle got 2, Minnesota and Winnipeg both got 2 in overtime wins over the LA team. Real nice of the Panthers to be sharing the wealth when they were so close in the hunt for first in the West and the Southwest division that they would even give up two points to Texas in a must win game as well. That’s being a bit harsh considering that they haven’t been playing horrible. However their lackluster defense and giving up more goals than they’re typically expected to normally do is quite a bit of a surprise considering how well they’ve been adding both in the offseason as well as during the trade deadline. As always it makes you wonder the hidden costs to adding players to a team beyond slotting them in and expecting instant improvement.
Last 10 Game Record: 6-2-2
Roast: Atlanta? Or Hotlanta? With a 6-2-2 record in their last 10 games the Inferno are flaming on as the end of the season draws near, losing only to the Buffalo Sabres and Manhattan Rage, and close overtime losses to the Hamilton Steelhawks and Edmonton Blizzard. This team is the yin to the Seattle Argonauts’ yang, the expansion team that burns bright and fast instead of building up slowly like a tidal wave. With the 2nd seed in the Atlantic locked up, Atlanta is likely to face a tough Great Lakes division team, and is hoping for at least a repeat of last season’s first round in the playoffs where they gave the Hamilton Steelhawks a good scare.
Last 10 Game Record: 4-5-1
Nham: This team has shed the ugly duckling title and come into form as a threat in the East for any team that faces them, including team’s that are allowed to go into the playoffs. Yet their last 10 games haven't been remarkable. Their wins have come over a mix of difficult and easy opponents like Texas and San Francisco respectively, whereas the losses are completely expected against the Great Lakes trio and the red hot Manhattan Rage. Between their corsi, overall league standing and our ranking of their performance, they have been consistent in this placing with no real big ups or downs minus perhaps the slight slowing down compared to their earlier pace in the season.
Last 10 Game Record: 8-2-0
Roast: The Jets are doing pretty damn well in the West, with a 8-2-0 record for their last ten (which included some games against pretty tough opponents), and have the third seed in the Northwest Division locked up tight. For a while they were even threatening to catch up to the Blizzard/Dragons combo, but ultimately fell back a bit. Taking the season series against the Los Angeles Panthers means that the playoff series between these two teams who are battling for home ice advantage going into the first round is going to be a close hard-fought series, although LA has loaded up by trading for a few players from New Orleans to shore up their team. This Jets team is outperforming expectations; let’s see how that extends to the playoffs, and how long they can keep that effort up.
Last 10 Game Record: 7-3-0
Nham: Texas are kind of an interesting team because I don’t doubt that any team disagrees that they are one of the best in the west, and most likely the best in the Southwest division. Where the differences lie I believe, is the perception of how ready they are right now this season. They’ve shown that they can be world beaters with their 3rd best corsi for per game, and 5th best goals against average over the last 30 games. Cilian Kavangh has been a surprisingly big difference maker despite the comparable TPE with White Goodman. I wonder if there’s even a goalie debate in their war room because it seems clear on the outside who has been playing well enough. I suppose if things aren’t working, then it becomes an interesting option at the very least.
Last 10 Game Record: 6-4-0
Roast: The Dragons stubbed their toes a bit heading into the last stretch of the season, but it was only the pinky and not the big toe. A 6-4-0 record is about average, but just being average might not cut it against some of the teams they can expect to face in the playoffs. Many thought Calgary would take a step back this season, but they have continued to show their strength. The Battle of Alberta continues as these two teams vie for the top spot in the Northwest, and look to fend off the Texas Renegades for the top seed in the Western Conference overall. Some worrying signs include losses to Los Angeles, New England and Minnesota - teams that should have posed little to no trouble for the Dragons. Hopefully the Dragons can correct their stride and come into the playoffs strongly.
Last 10 Game Record: 8-2-0
Nham: Edmonton gets the slight nod over the provincial rivals despite being in a complete deadlock between the two in overall record. Edmonton has the slight advantage in shots for and goals whereas Calgary has the overwhelming difference defensively. Kind of a shock considering the investment that Edmonton made in the offseason which unfortunately was recently undone with their budget issue just recently, forcing them to release those two free agent signing in Chico Smeb and Eric Vanderberg. It’s likely that they’ll still continue to be competitive as a repeat of last season rolling with sub 600 TPE defensemen, but for a team hoping for a bigger splash in the postseason, this comes as a drastic hit to their short and long term future.
Last 10 Game Record: 8-2-0
Roast: Manhattan seems to finally have woken up for the season, as they are finally playing up to their potential. 8-2-0 is a pretty good record for them, with losses to the Hamilton Steelhawks and the Buffalo Stampede acceptable results. A 10-0 drubbing of the Platoon was likely the high points of the past 10 games, but the renewed momentum bodes well for their playoff performance. The Rage will need to stay angry in order to have any chance of getting out of the East, but things seem to finally be at a boil for them, not a simmer. They have also finally locked up the Atlantic division, as early on it looked like the Inferno were threatening to scorch them a bit.
Last 10 Game Record: 7-2-1
Nham: Kind of a shock, Hamilton not being in first despite their overwhelming points lead on everybody else in the league? As of this ranking, their next closest competitors in Buffalo and Chicago are only away by 4 and 6 points respectively so it doesn’t actually seem as big of a difference compared to my perception of how they and Michael Scarn have completely obliterated most teams in the league. Their record thus far brought them this far but unfortunately their most recent record where they’ve slowed down considerably, knocked them down to this spot. This includes two regulation losses against Chicago (coupled with 1 win against them in the last 10 games). I think if you had to point fingers at one spot it would have to be goaltending as they are #1 easily in terms of suppression shot attempts but are 6th in goals against average. Granted their PDO sits around the 98.5% mark meaning that there is potentially some equalization in order if Jobin can pick up back into an average or even dominant performance, leading to a potential consecutive cup win.
Last 10 Game Record: 8-1-1
Roast: Chicago surged in the last little bit which brings a sigh of relief for those having parlays and/or casino bets involving them. A 8-1-1 record which included splitting a pair of games against Hamilton, and a shootout loss against New England is pretty good, and it looks like the Syndicate might just squeak over the needed wins for the over on the casino bet. Just as it has been all season, the Great Lakes is a bloodbath of a division and this team which looks likely to break the 100-point barrier is going to have to play in the first round of the playoffs while Hamilton looks to have a bye until the second round. Both Daniel Smeb and Martijn Westbroek look to continue their hot streaks, and Gunnar Soderberg has been heating up lately as well, which bodes well for the end of the season and also for the playoffs.
Last 10 Game Record: 9-1-0
Nham: With our #1 ranked team the Buffalo Stampede, I have to admit that this could honestly have been a three sided coin flip, or just a three way tie where each of the Great Lakes teams had knocked each other about in a pseudo rock-paper-scissors game. However like the best choice, rock, Buffalo was able to hold their own against other contending teams (1-1 against Hamilton in their last 10 games) and had dominant performances over other semi playoff contenders like Atlanta and New England with the best record in the last 10. Compared to Hamilton, their goaltending is a significant part of their success with Doyle starting to run away a bit with the goalie of the year and could probably have it in the bag should they keep up their numbers for the rest of the season.
