Newfoundland Berserkers Game Reactions for Day 7
Pregame coverage: Newfoundland goes on the road to take on Carolina, St. Louis, and Vancouver. All teams with mediocre records. Carolina at 4-9-1, St. Louis at 5-8, and Vancouver at 6-7-2. While none of these teams are major tests it is an opportunity for Newfoundland to show up and prove that they can play good hockey every game no matter who is on the ice. Newfoundland and Carolina have playoff history and it is exciting each time they play. Newfoundland lost to Vancouver in the S56 SMJHL Four Star Cup final. I think all Zerks fans look forward to any opportunity Newfoundland has to get a taste of revenge. Game 16 Newfoundland ![]() ![]() So Carolina got absolutely destroyed. The kind of dominant performance that makes people ashamed to say they even root for such a team. Carolina got thumped by a whopping margin of 9-0. 9 FREAKING GOALS TO 0 GOALS. DESTROYED KID. WRECKED. How did this absolute whooping come to be? It came to be because every Zerk came to Carolina to prove something. To prove that the Zerks are for real and if you feed them a bad team boom things are going to happen. The rookie Slavakov Valdimirashenko had 2 goals and 2 assists. A powerful performance that elevated the whole team to be able to exploit the weak Carolina defense. Bas had 3 assists and 3 hits, a huge performance from the goal scorer to show the ability to be physical and be a playmaker. Matty Sandeen, Jonas Caspari, Robert Black, and Jesse Trudeau all had 2 assists. But the real stars of the game were Ric Charlesowrth and Aleksandrs Balcers. Charlesworth had a hat trick from the center position and Balcers had a hat trick from the blue line. We caught up with Balcers after the game to get his thoughts on the performance and what he ate for breakfast, “It's such an amazing feeling to get rewarded on the scoresheet for all the hard work I've been putting in this season. It's not easy being a rookie in this league when you have players that are in their second/third/fourth or even fifth season, but I kept my head to the grindstone and kept firing shots and it has finally paid off. Even better was getting to score a hat trick alongside my buddy Ric Charlesworth... and of course the 2 points but even more the statement that was made with such a dominant victory… In terms of my breakfast, I actually feel like that played a big role in my performance because I had greek last night and woke up to some leftover calamari that I slammed down. Turns out eating fried squid in the morning is the perfect breakfast for a Kraken gameday.”.In summary Zerks eat Squid for breakfast. Both had phenomenal performances that will never be forgotten. But there can only be one ZotG. Zerk of the Game honors had to go to: Aleksandrs Balcers! Balcers had a hat trick from the blue line. He brought great defense and great scoring tonight that helped to create the parade of humiliation for Carolina! Congrats! Game 17: Newfoundland ![]() ![]() A game that at one point seemed decisively in Newfoundland hands at 3-1 slipped away and Newfoundland found themselves down in the hole 3-4 with a little under 10 to go. Then Bas O’freakin Bigbers scored 3 straight goals in the final 10 minutes of the game to score a late hatty and push the game in favor of the Zerks leading to a DOMINANT WIN OH YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH. BEAT CROWS. Some really great performances by many Zerks tonight. Vaseline Podcalzone had 3 apples. Nike Kickz Jr and Jesse Trudeau had big goals this evening including the opening shot from Trudeau to start the game. One Zerk we must talk about though was Ric Charlesworth. It cannot be understated what a mammoth season this player is having. Tonight he continued it with a 5 point performance that included 1 goal and 4 apples. Just a fantastic night from Charlesworth. Zerk of the Game honors goes to: Bas O’Bigbers for his final 10 minute hat trick that sealed the deal for the Zerks. Probably the greatest hockey game Bas has ever played. When catching up with him after the game I wanted to get his thoughts on it, “a great game for sure but we shouldn’t have let this team even score 4 goals. We just kind of lost some focus at times but our keeper tonight is a rookie and he’ll learn. He’s already got two career shutouts. He’ll get better from here… I had to score that late hat trick. I couldn’t let St. Louis think they were actually as good as us and someone needed to step up and remind them of that. So I went in there and scored a hat trick in 10 minutes. It’s what I do.” Game 18: Newfoundland ![]() ![]() The downside of kicking so much ass all the time is that occasionally you are too tired and then you have to travel across the country. Which is what happened when we played Vancouver. We were so exhausted from kicking so much ass that we just didn’t show up in Vancouver. Losing 0-4. Zerk of the Game: Dwayne Gretzky for not being on the ice when a goal was scored, playing solid d, and hitting some Vancouver players while trying to save the Whales a valiant effort. Congrats to John St. Ark I guess for the shut out. Word Count: 932 ZotG Leaderboard (Volsungr Award Leaderboard) T1st Ric Charlesworth: 3 T1st Bas O’Bigbers: 3 T-2nd Billy Brooks: 2 T-2nd Shion Okamoto: 2 T-2nd Aleksandrs Balcers: 2 T-2nd Dwayne Gretzky: 2 |
