S58 mPT #2 Most Important Stat

The most important is long-term motivation. This isn't sprint style game, this is more like marathon. It's important to find a way to spend time at long-term here in site or Discord or whatever you prefer to use.

Shooting range. All other stats are meaningless if you can snipe top corner from your own blue line mate it's pretty simple don't you think

A new user messages me and asks for some advice, I am telling him fighting is without a doubt the most important Stat. Every team is looking for the next great pugilist.

It always depends on what you are going for. Passing is always good, and having speed is also always good. Shot blocking will take you very far defensively with checking also being hugely important.

The most important stat I would say is strength. When you are getting bullied in the boards and the one on one battles, you would wish that you have spent more time in the weight room, before you get knocked on your ass

the most important stat is puckhandling. it's very important for your team to control possession of the puck in hockey, as you can't score when you don't have the puck and you can only concede when you don't have the puck.

I've been studying attributes and builds a lot since I joined the league, albeit only theoretically. So far, a lot of my observations seem to be confirmed by sim tests and results. Here's something I've worked on a while back but actually never posted anywhere :

Here, I counted the number of time every attribute appears in a role as important or key attribute and gave it a "relative value" in which being the key attribute is worth thrice being an important attribute. Making the key attribute worth twice the important attribute gave similar results. It's important to note that the Goon, Enforcer and Agitator roles were counted in both Forwards and Defensemen roles, but then only counted once in all roles.

According to this, Puckhandling seems to be an obvious choice regardless of position. Sure, it is never the key attribute, but it is important in way over half the roles. Balance also plays a huge role, no matter where you play.

The fact that there are more roles for forwards makes it so there is a wider choice for forwards after that. Getting Open, Offensive Read and Speed getting high scores isn't surprising, but Checking does seem like an odd result.

Obviously, the real answer to someone who asks for help about his build is to go with the player role they are aiming for, but if the have absolutely no clue, sending them this chart would be helpful too. Most of it seems to be correlating with successful players' builds.

And then there's Stamina. Very few roles are marked as roles that need Stamina, but actually you need Stamina to be good, no matter the role.

The most important stat all depends on what you want to do, but I think it's important that you are important. So choosing an important stat that is important to you is important. In other words, Offensive Read.

Everybody’s seemed answer the main point so far. There really isn’t any most important one since balance generally gets people much further than optimizing into a single build. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t fun to stat dump into one particular trait and gain notoriety for being the best at _______ in the league.

I think some of the traits might not be as clear as to what they do, or completely entail so I’d like to lean into the NHL to help explain to a new user some of the possibilities.

SCREENING

Whether that entails being Tomas Holmstrom or being Big Buff versus the Vancouver Canucks, it’s been interesting to see players across the league invest in a wide range from none to being their highest trait. Don’t know if anybody has hit the 20 Screening mark yet but I have to imagine they’ll unlock the Avery Screening Traith if they do.

GETTING OPEN

Don’t know if I’ve seen a lot of mention for this particular stat which all offensive dynamos love to invest in. While we’re hoping for a visual sim with the introduction of FHM 7 or later, it would be interesting to see a representation of how open some players can get. Maybe similarly with a maxed out Get Open stat, you’ll find your player in these confuddling situations.

PUCKHANDLING

Maybe one of the most important traits on all parts of the rink. Not being able to handle the puck means that your team is down one man when it comes to a passing option. Having great puckhandling can keep possession and create chances out of nowhere. Alternatively, poor puckhandling might mean that you lose out on clear...CLEAR cut chances.

SHOOTING ACCURACY

Who doesn’t like to see snipers just pick the small bit of daylight and see them roof the puck, knocking the waterbottle off the net in the process? Pretty straight forward stat. Good thing we don’t have NHL21 or something as our visual sim otherwise people would be laughing at all the dmen who took shots like these with 5 Shooting Accuracy.

OFFENSIVE READ

Okay so technically the description of this particular stat is knowing how plays will develop when your team has the puck and what to do when you don’t have the puck specifically. Sometimes it feels like in the PBP that players have the puck in a prime shooting spot like the homeplate/slot or just off of a rebound and opt to pass it elsewhere and have a much lower success angle shot attempt be taken. Thankfully we have yet to see anybody go on a breakaway and pull this nonsense.

CHECKING

This one is definitely a bit of a strange one especially for new users. I think most people come into the player building mindset that checking physically means hitting or hard physical engagement which finesse players might avoid. While there is some truth in the real life examples of finesse players like a Gaudreau not necessarily being up in another player’s space making their defensive impact felt, having this ability means at least they’re part of the play and ensuring that their opposition don’t have easy access to receiving passes or taking shots from good, uncontested angles. This is another exaggeration but if I had to describe a lack of Checking, it’d probably be something like what Ovechkin provided here.

HITTING

Maybe one of the least attractive defensive stats despite what people love to see in real life games, I guess that’s the natural of the game’s direction in modern times and how everything is more of a finesse style. Still, that doesn’t stop many teams asking their players to turn up their physical engagement and you regularly see players with more than 5 hits every now and then. I like to think this is what they did because of either the sliders and/or their own hitting stat in getting some double hits here and there.

Honestly I would say it's all up to them and what their dream player build is, for me personally i'm trying to weigh heavy into my skating but obviously if they're going for a big body defensemen that wouldn't be the most helpful for them. I'd just say not worry about what is the most important and just build the player you want to be.

Depends on the position. If I'm talking only about my position of forward, I'd probably say strength. Strength affects every part of the game. Especially being able to win battles against other players. I think I'd focus strength before anything else.

I feel like strength is quite the important stat. It helps you maintain puck possession and win puck battles. And for centers, it helps with faceoffs as well.

One thing I learned in my short time is that improving you physicals early might be the most important thing to do. I'd lead them in that direction letting them know getting them to at least 12 is a great base for your player. Then after that contact your GM so I dont build you a bad player.

The most important stat is aggression, and that is what I tell all rookies. Honestly, you can suck at hockey. You can have 5 in every attribute that is not aggression. But, if that TPE goes into aggression, it doesn't matter, you'll be the next Joe K. Absolute legend in the game if you only put points into aggression.

Speed is the name of the game. If you can get the puck and skate past your opponents on account of your great speed, you will win the game 9.5/10 times. If you're not moving fast, you'll end up last.
