S58 PT #3 Storylines

something i am really enjoying seeing is different teams on top of the standings. i think it would be really great if we saw a team that hasnt had the best luck in recent season win it all. so far it is looking like two teams could easily come out on top that havent in quite a while. i would love to see the Texas Renegades or the Toronto North Stars take home the hardware. how exciting would it be if those two teams squared off in the finals?! in my time in the league both of these teams have been a bit down and out, so it is really nice to see them doing well. i think they are both deserving of some glory as ive seen the hard work they put in. they both have some really great players who have been around a while and stuck by their team through all of it, those people are what have brought them to where they are now and it would be nice to see them rewarded.

I would say the biggest story so far is the return to relevance for the Tampa Bay Barracuda. This team was mired in a deep rebuild for the past few season, and it is starting to bear some results. Many of the teams top prospects have been called up and have been playing key roles on the team. Guys like Colin Lampert, Joorgustraad DuBolk and Igor Victory have been playing huge minutes on the defensive side. Its not just the young guys who are stepping up. The vets of the team have really upped their game. Michael Fitted has 30 points in 36 games, 10 of which goals. Tom Fiddler has been tearing it up this season with 18 goals and 25 assists for 43 points in just 36 games. Ambacas Cuddles has been a mainstay on the defensive side and continues to produce excellent performances. Zoltan Topalo has been a point per game player. Overall it looks like the Barracuda have taken their first step toward Challenge Cup contention.

I think that Texas Renegades being so strong surprises people. They basically dominate SHL right now. They have been strong team previous seasons too, but never seen anything like this before in my career. Are they going to be the next powerhouse at next seasons? It's hard to answer, but SHL is a lot of more stable than Junior ones, even Quebec City Citadelles is dominating another regular season again. But what comes to playoffs, everything is clearly possible as QCC unfortunately fall down early at previous season. Honestly I'm also waiting my own team Detroit Falcons to get more wins and play better games than we do now. My priority is help my team to achieve the best possible results and this might be my final season to try get that mythical cup to Detroit. I'm also interesting looking my SHL team Buffalo Stampede, how they will compete at future, when I'm part of their core?

Over halfway into the Season 58 season, the Texas Renegades sport a record of 32-4 and are the top team in the SHL. They are first in the league in goals for and goals against by a large margin. They currently have five players scoring above a point per game pace in Kekkonen, Williams, Kvalheim, Kubinec and Wachter. In net, their goalie tandem of Cillian Kavanaugh and White Goodman has been rock solid, and amazingly both goalies are in the top 8 for wins league wide. While the Renegades have certainly benefitted from playing in the weaker Western Conference, there is no doubting that the Renegades are a legitimate cup contender. They've got the majority of their games against the Great Lakes division coming up in the latter part of the season, so it will be interesting to see how they stack up directly against the other top teams in the league.

The biggest storyline of this season is clearly the absolute dominance from Texas Renegades. Since I joined the SHL there has been one single division that has been completely dominant but it seems that for at least one season this is different. Hopefully, we will see a new era take place where more divisions grow stronger and the best teams are not all in the same division. Texas has only 4 losses and not a single overtime loss. That means the Renegades only have missed 8 points after 36 games played. 168 GF is the highest in the league and together with a GA of 71 it is clear that Texas are on another level than the rest of the league this season. The question is how long can Texas keep going with this superior team. They will probably be the league winner after regular season, but are they able to keep winning in the playoffs that are a completely different beast? Finally, can they keep it up for the next seasons? These are the questions with answers we have to wait for but one thing is clear. The Renegades dominance is the storyline of the season so far.

For me personally and my team the biggest storyline from this season on Newfoundland is how all the rookies from last year have really been coming through to help the team be at the top of the league this year compared to the disappointing season last. In S57 Newfoundland's first draft pick grabbed Billy Brooks at Number 11, Brooks first year on the team had him put up 2 goals and 9 assist with a rough -40 on the year but has done a full 180 so far this season holding up the back end currently sitting at 6 goals and 9 assists just 35 games into the season, not to mention his 22 shot blocks and 17 takeaways.

Next up the Berserkers didn't have any picks in the second round but with the 3rd round 31st overall pick we picked up Ric Charlesworth aka Ric Clutchworth who has been nothing but fantastic this year. In Charlesworth rookie year he had a decent 5 goals and 13 assists on a struggling team and as the routine will continue to show Ric has been amazing this year scoring huge goals and important moments and netting himself 16 goals and 16 assets in 35 games played.

The 4th round saw us grab the first 2 picks (37 and 38) who was Nike Kickz Jr and Jesse Trudeau, Nike had one of the better rookie years putting up 22 points on the year and now has been playing as our first line center putting lots of pressure on him but has been living up to the challenge no problem and continues to get better after every week and has been a good powerplay man for us notching 3 points. Trudeau is up next who plays on Kickz Jr right side had a very rough rookie season with only 4 goals and 15 points but is in the running for most improved as he has jumped to 11 goals with 23 points in 35 games played, with the help of Nike and Podcalzone as his line mates most of the year currently having a +15 on the first line.

The rookies from S57 are becoming a big part of why Newfoundland has seen the success as long with new talent coming in and the veterans helping the Berserkers are a very fun team to watch this season.

The biggest storyline to me are the Tampa Bay Barracuda. For seasons now, we have seen Tampa Bay become a joke of a team because they were never being good and always in the bin because they had a shit roster and always were losing and seeing them win would be a miracle but now, Tampa Bay is now above 500 which is like seeing the New York Knicks being above 500 right now which is still unbelievable but also a fluke. So it is still good to see a team that has been bad for a long and the last time they were good, they blew a 3-0 series lead in the SHL finals which still hurts but now they are looking to be a better team. Another storyline is seeing Toronto become one of the best teams in the league and obviously, we all know Toronto is the center of the universe and they are obviously good.

Hugh Jazz was known has one of the leagues best defensive forwards, he never got recognized as this but he always had one of the highest plus/minus in the league, strong corsi and he produced strong results 5 on 5 offensively. So this off-season he switched to D and this season he is looking to be one of the best defensive D's in the league. He is big and hard to play against, he is one of the leagues best players at taking the puck away and he has been averaging over a hit per game, blocking shots and he has been killing penalties. He is never going to be the top dog on the team in terms of offence but he wants to be a strong defender that helps the team win. He is tending in the right direction and he might get nominated for best defensive D in the league.

The biggest story line in the SMJHL has been the unfortunate results for the Kraken. RART has been standing tall in every game, but has been met with more than 30 shots against every game and has not been able to win games on his own when the remaining Kraken don't provide the offense. In the games when the Kraken have come out swinging and gone up into a lead, the team seems to shut off and leaves RART on his own to battle the opposing team and get pummeled by shots. Losing a couple of well-playing seniors to callups during the off-season and picking up a couple of promising draft picks for the second year in a row seems like the Kraken has taken a step back from the promising showing last season. One of the highlights of the first half of the season has been the performance of the new rookies on the third line, with Aleks Blixtstrom, Twelve Forty-Seven Fifteen and Daud Ramza putting up points on the same pace as the first line. This gives great promise for the future as the sophomores has made progress individually but need some more time to mesh up together as a team.

The New England Wolfpacks chase towards the playoffs.

With the departure of Dick Clapper ahead of this weekends games, their chances of making it took a slight hit. That is until we figured out his replacement on the top line.

Mr (Clean) himself, Andrei Kostitsyn is the one to get a nod to play on that first line with Slappy McShooty and the 100th best player in the league Ethan Price. A legendary player with a legendary (and dangerous) following, The most dirty clean player in the entire SHL history will get his shot at glory. Something that the world is not yet ready for of course.

What makes Clean so good is his ability to say so much using so few words. His vocabulary is (Clean) from words that are not important.

Following his reminding journey in this season with the hopes of making it into the playoffs will be one for the history books.

Stay tuned.

Will Corey Kennedy score? Ever? Now some might say - well he's scored 3 times. When a guy is shooting 2.11% I'd hardly count that. When that same guy is outshooting other players on his team who should be (and are) scoring the goals, I think some questions need to be asked. Will Corey Kennedy score? Will he ever learn to actually just pass instead of shooting? Why isn't he giving Gunnar the puck? Why isn't he boosting J's fantasy team by giving Gunnar the puck? Will his arms fall off as he continues to age and maybe then he'll be forced to stop trying to score because we now know he never will?

I think that's just the storyline that we've gotta focus on here. Even when he's not trying to be (which is rare) - Corey Kennedy is the center of attention. Just how he likes it.

So many things that could be a story line for this season. First of all, you have Toronto tied with Hamilton for the top of the east. Im pretty sure Hamilton was a clear favorite at the beginning of the season, so to see someone tied with them is pretty impressive. But oh yes, Hamilton is not on top of the league like many had thought, that spot belongs none other then the Texas Renegades in a shock to many. They are in the lead by 7 points over Hamilton and Toronto. From the top, we go to the bottom and see the New Orleans Specters in possession of the last spot with a record of 6 wins, 28 losses and 4 ties, giving them 16 points and surprising many by being as bad as they are. A perennial contender since expansion, it looks like they may be entering a period of rebuild.

The biggest storyline of the season is the ridiculous situation of the Great Lakes Division. The way it is looking right now, it is more than likely that the fourth team in the Eastern Conference will miss the playoffs because of the lack of balance between that division and the other Eastern Conference division. If they weren't directly competing and playing against each other so often, these teams might be the four highest teams in the SHL.

To make this storyline even more tragic, the team that's on pace to miss the playoffs in the Great Lakes division is the defending champions of the Chicago Syndicate. The team, which definitely didn't get worse over the offseason, is currently at 48 points in 38 games, while Buffalo is in front of them at 53 points in 40 games. The gap could be closed and Chicago could pass the Stampede, but Buffalo missing the playoffs wouldn't make any sense either.
