Player management wasn't difficult, and in fact I actually looked forward to updating the sheet every season manually.

Yeah for me it was checking activity and there aren't too many eligible players for wjc anyway. I had to make calls I don't think a bot could like "oh theyre 'active' but all they did was shitpost twice and no ACs or anything so I'm not gonna force a team to play them over a better ia"

You were much nicer than I in the IIHF HO

but then again, WJC has always had that flexibility.

Mad that the current list is not up to date and therefore Czechia does not have a team.

I thought they said there were only 17 eligible players

Iqbal, Dobrovsky, Sombreros, Podlezl, Hank, Octive, Diamante are all IA. Out of that list of 19 players 7 are IA.

Can't speak for current HO, but team creation doesn't typically look at activity, just numbers.

When I was around we looked at both numbers. You want as many actives as you can get playing in the WJC. Filling out a roster with IAs like this wouldn't really be beneficial.

curious if it matters if a team could exist one season and not the next

I figure you'd prob like to hear from Zema as opposed to me, so I'll just throw this in separately.

When I did the process, team longevity was never considered. We basically took teams on a season-by-season basis.

I think the WJC have to get creative with their solutions without destabilizing and changing the entire tournament year in and year out. UCORCAL might not be the best solution every season, but it's a good solution for most years. Team World could change every season and have teams go in and out of it depending on how many players they have. Finland and Sweden could get together with other nations, or DACH could split into a different type of coalition. But to what end? Making broad changes to the tournament structure every season will just cheapen the entire experience. Having these compromises in play allows for a semblance of stability with a possibility of getting creative at times when it really calls for it.

If that's the current sentiment then that's fine but the expectation 20 seasons ago was that numbers would be examined each season and teams changed accordingly including adding or subtracting teams and switching to combined teams when necessary but always being in favor of countries having their own teams.

The directive for the year i've been in WJC has been Actives above all else.  It's the first time a lot of users entering the J draft can see their player in a live sim so it's been tailored to engage those users.  Not appease the International groups as a whole.  Which is why the grouped teams and such exist.  At this point it's less a true WJC and more something like a international prospect tournament.

I actually think a czechia team would be better than a young guns team because then the newer guys could play with their actual countrymen as opposed to some rando s61s and get creamed by the teams with better players

Most will get to play with their countrymen on UCORAL.  Czechia gets a team, fills half the roster and wind up with leftover actives from other teams and what's really the difference?  Cause most of the leftover actives aren't capped players.
