(GRADED) Deep Dive #2 - The Battle of Two Giants
#1
(This post was last modified: 07-12-2021, 03:22 PM by leafs1997.)

It was a battle of two giants. Newfoundland, and Anchorage, two absolutely stacked and broken teams faced off against each other for a game on July 7, 2021. Newfoundland is currently 37-5-1 with 75 points and a 0.872% Winning percentage. Anchorage is really close behind, 35-6-2, with 72 points and a 0.837% Winning percentage. Both teams have electric offenses, shutdown defenses and excellent goaltending. Their goal differentials are around 100, NL at 103 while Anchorage at 98. With all of this in mind, you’d think this game would be a close one. A nail biter. One that would require battle till the end. Surely this game would be a low scoring one! Nope. Think again. Because Newfoundland literally beat the crap out of Anchorage that day, a victory with so much scoring that the scoreboard needed an additional digit. Let’s break down the 110% dominating performance that Newfoundland put on the poor Armada.

Final Score: 10-3 Newfoundland

Overall, the Berserkers as a whole heavily outshot the Armada 51-30. There were only 6 Penalty minutes total, and hits, takeaways and giveaways were nothing out of the ordinary. However, on faceoffs, Newfoundland crushed it, winning 62% of them, 42 wins to 25 losses.

The first period, seemed relatively normal. It was a scoring fest, but the game remained rather close. The first goal by Novikov on the power play gave Anchorage the lead. The lead would swing back and forth, but eventually, Newfoundland came out 3-2, with goals by Charlesworth, Black and Toretta.

The second was where the Berserkers really started to pour it on with 20 shots, and was the difference in the game. 4 goals, that saw with Black netting his 2nd, Vladimirashenko, Trudeau and Lagasse scoring as well really put Anchorage in a bind, now down 7-3 after 2. The boos from FHM just kept coming on.

Finally, in the last 20 minutes, Anchorage seemingly gave up, and allowed 3 more goals in. One by Athanasios and two shot by Shion Okamoto sealed the deal for Newfoundland and ended off with a 10-3 drubbing for the Armada. The majority of those goals were all scored from even strength. Only 2 power play goal were scored, one apiece.

Bean Gamble started the game off, but after 45 minutes was relieved for Ethan Bravo. The gamble that night did not work out, as Gamble went on to allow 7 goals on 34 shots, not good for a .790 SV%. Bravo didn’t do much better, as he allowed 3 goals on 17 shots. The goaltending unfortunately was not there, but as with all sports, it is almost impossible for it always to be the goalie’s fault.

The defense for the Armada had poor ratings throughout, with all but two players having deep, deep red on the Defensive Ratings. Most players took a –1 or –2 but Zidane and Goode were –4 in the game.

For Newfoundland’s offense, many players took a nice boost to their stats, with 13 players with above 60 game rating while most got a +1 or +2. The biggest benefiters had a +5 and they were Toretta and rookie Nordstern.

Top performers from Newfoundland included Robert Black (2G, 3A, 5P), Shion Okamoto (2G, 2A), Nike Kickz Jr. (0G, 3A, 3P) and Leon Athanasios (1G, 2A, 3P).

In conclusion, was this game Anchorage’s downfall? Were they never going to be able to recover from this? Would their season go downhill and sour quickly? Well, not really. Since that game, they have gone 11-1-0. It is as though the complete opposite has happened, and they have really showed up in the past 12 games. For Newfoundland, they have also gone 11-1-0, so it seems like they have continued to just steamroll. In the end, this lopsided game may have just been an extreme outlier. Anchorage has fully recovered since, and the Berserkers have been as just as good.
