Deep Dive #2 - The Gabe Johnson Effect (On Atlanta)

Following up the deep dive from Assclap about gabe johnson's impact on the anchorage armada, I decided to do a similar deep dive on mr. gwod but instead focus on his SHL team. Now, the comparison is not exactly the same since he was a general manager at anchorage and is only a player at atlanta, but as we all know gabe johson definitely has an impact wherever he goes, and also in places where he does not go.

Let's set the scene before gabe arrived on the team. Atlanta was an expansion team in Season 56, headed by the current general manager hotdog. During the expansion draft, hotdog prioritized picking some older players who were not exactly the highest TPE, which could be seen by some as a weird tactic to say the least. However, hotdog's strategy made some sense -- he knew that in the era of franchise hockey manager, it's almost impossible to win a cup unless your team is stacked to the gills with TPE or you are hamilton, so he realized that he would never be able to win a cup by bootstrapping an expansion team, especially given the rules for the expansion draft that were quite disadvantageous for the expansion teams. Therefore, he decided that it would be more advantageous to try to build a good locker room instead, and to build the team slowly over time after prioritizing a good culture.

Now, before the arrival of gabe here were the season records for the atlanta inferno:

S56: 25-22-3 (0.530)
S57: 27-33-6 (0.455)
S58: 30-34-2 (0.470)
S59: 25-35-6 (0.424)
S60: 34-27-5 (0.553)
S61: 32-30-4 (0.515)

And here are the stats after gabe johnson joined the team:

S62: 28-28-10 (0.500)
S63: 38-22-6 (0.621)

Now, here is the point percentage plotted on a graph:

So, what conclusions can we draw from just looking at the season records for the atlanta inferno before and after gabe joined? Well, the data is honestly a bit inconclusive. I would like to say that it is very hard to draw a conclusion about the effect of gabe johnson, at least in the SHL. While the record of the team did improve on average over his two seasons with the team, it is a very slight change: from 0.491 points percentage before he joined to a total 0.509 points percentage when including S62 and S63. So I would say it appears there is some weak correlation happening here. However, I believe there are some phenomena that cannot be measured with numbers. There are some things that science just can not explain. Sometimes, instead of looking at the statistics, we have to look at the vibes. And for me, the vibes are very strong.

We can see an example of this in the behaviour of fellow atlantian, @Leppish, who is coincidentally a deep dive grader and may be the deep dive grader that is reading this very deep dive. After polling the atlanta locker room, I tried to measure people's perception of leppy before and after the arrival of gabe johnson, to see if he had any cultural effects on the locker room, since culture was a very big part of hotdog's initial vision for the team. What we found out will shock everyone.

This was peoples' opinion of leppy before gabe arrived on the team:

It appears as though the arrival of gabe johnson made leppy a nicer person! Or at least he is now being perceived as a nicer person. What a cultural effect gabe has had on the locker room!
