Prompt #2
It's not every day that the hockey crazed kids of Philadelphia get to spend a day learning from someone as successful in the sport as Kaarlo Kekkonen, who is currently approaching his 700th career point in the SHL playing with the Forge. In order to teach the local kids exactly what it is about him that has allowed him to enjoy the success that he's seen to date, he spent a day talking to them about the power of his mindset and what it allows him to do. A big believer in the "Mamba Mentality" as made famous by the late great Kobe Bryant, Kaarlo talked to the kids about how supreme confidence, a never say die attitude and a commitment to being the very best will ultimately take them further in life and in sport than anything else. It's not a message that children are always receptive to, but it's one that will go a long way toward allowing them to enjoy future success in life and hopefully it has opened their eyes to what can be achieved.

Player prompt.

Why did Alex play hockey? Well, it was because his brothers played hockey. He has two older brothers who both showed an aptitude for hockey at a young age. He'd go to their games, originally because he had to, but later because he enjoyed going. The game fascinated him. He'd watch games on TV with his brothers and they'd explain to him what was going on. Sure, he wanted the approval of his brothers but the real reason he asked questions was because he had to know. So when the time came for him to start playing hockey, Alex jumped at the chance. And while his brothers were good, he was great. Maybe it was all of that watching of the games when he was young, but he took to the game right away and was quickly placed on the path for greatness, the one that eventually landed him a spot with the Anaheim Outlaws and eventually the San Francisco Pride. The one that got him a Four Star Cup and two Bojo Biscuit awards. The one that will hopefully get him a Challenge Cup before he retires (we'll see about that).

Creative Prompt:

This one comes from my own experience. I don't think it turned me on to sport, but I do remember that it is a very positive experience in my life. I was in 2nd grade I think, so lets make these youths about that age. We'll set up a game in the gym (or ice) where we put some hula hoops down for each team with a dodgeball in the hula hoop. Teams of three kids are tasked with protecting their ball with an objective of also stealing the other teams' balls. Mayhem for some young youths, but absolutely a great time. This game takes agility and smarts to make the right decisions. Not only would this exercise help cultivate some fun, it also teaches these kids the equality of offense and defense. Maybe we can identify some young defensemen or snipers in this young group. To reinforce the positive day, lets take them all out for ice cream, too.

Eero Makela is a Finn. Finland has the highest ice hockey players per capita in the world, so it's only natural that Makela pulled on the skates at an early age. Both of his parents were coaches in the small town he grew up in, and he had the opportunity to play for both of them during his young career. His father never reached beyond a local house league level, but his mother was part of the 2004 Finnish Women's Olympic team, and participated in several Women's World Championship campaigns for her nation.

Indeed, to this day Eero Makela wears socks with his dad's number 17 written on them in black sharpie. He honors his mother by wearing her number 47 across his back.

"Family is very important to me," Makela said. "Without my family's encouragement and support, I'd never have ended up being a barely serviceable SHL defenseman."

Chimkin Wing originally wanted to play hockey because it was a great way to find the ladies and possibly get some strange gash. Even as a young man, he was only interested in strange gash. As it turns out, the strange gash was the friends we made along the way. Nowadays, the comradery is really what gets Chimkin Wing off, much to the dismay of his team mates who walk in on him in the toilet stall. The only exception is Jaska Seppala (@Zombiewolf), who is just too god damned sexy to pass up, and though Chimkin Wing certainly considers Seppala a friend, they're clearly more than just friends. It's like that one song that says something about "lovers and friends". I don't know what the song is called, who sings it, or any lyrics other than "lovers and friends". These days Chimkin Wing's only reason for showing up to the rink, and honestly only reason he is still alive and hasn't overdosed on gas station boner pills and cheap hotdogs, is Seppala.

Written Task: Why did your player want to play hockey to begin with? What drew them to the game? Was it a supportive parent? A Hall of Fame hero? Maybe it's just the sound a skate makes when it cuts into the ice? What is it about hockey that's so special to your player? (150+ words)

BASE PACK wanted to play hockey so that he (I guess BASE PACK is a he I don't know if I have confronted this situation at all) could afford money to buy more SHL trading cards to add to his pack. He had never really played the sport before he had just really been a collector of the cards. But as any hobbyist knows there comes a time where you have to make more money to be able to afford more cards. BASE PACK entered the sport because his bank account was getting dangerously low with all the cards that he was acquiring. In fact, even with his contracts he's had to slow down his card buying. So even though he is a professional hockey player drafted to a SHL team he is struggling to meet his goal! He will have to do some more sponsorships soon I think with the coaching being so expensive to stay relevant in the league. I guess money will always draw BASE PACK to the game of hockey.

Magnus always wanted to play hockey because he is from a town that is basically consisting of two things - fishing and hockey. And since he didn't want to be a fisherman, hockey was the obvious choice. Ornskoldvik is known as a hockey factory, so that is something that is steeped in tradition as well. The local team, Modo, was a great jumping point for many famous players, including Markus Naslund, Peter Forsberg, and the Sedin twins, Henrik and Daniel.

He was the only person in his family to really pursue hockey, so maybe he can start a new tradition. Magnus loves the sound of the skates on ice, the swoosh, the crack of a puck hitting the stick, and the smash of people hitting the boards. There is not much else that he would rather be doing than this, really. Being able to play a game in order to earn a living - that is a dream that most people can only have as a dream, not reality.

When I was younger I never thought it would be possible to be in the SHL, afterall I've never seen a platypus make it to be big leagues and never had thought in my wildest dreams that I would be the first. I grew up around a lot of different folks, different sentient animals as well as humans, all who had their different traditions and sports. My best friends growing up were penguins and hockey was like second nature to them. It took me a while to get used to the ice, as I had mostly only encountered water in liquid form, but even in those days when I was just learning the game, it was love at first ice. While my friends and coaches were always supportive, my family shied away from the idea, thinking I should do something more noble. Years later I have now done the impossible, become a secret agent, beloved household pet, and as far as I'm aware the first platypus in the SHL, what a dream come true!

Prompt 2

There are a lot of different activities that the kids should do to learn some fundamentals of life and being a professional athlete.

1. Rise and Shine baby, when being an athlete there is little time to sleep in, but yes sleep is important. These kids will be getting up at 8 am everyday to start their training, and they will be in bed by 10 to ensure they are getting enough sleep every night. With this I also want to teach them the importance of being on time, as that is very valueable.

2. Dieting, if you have followed my career you know I don't really believe in dieting like some other players. I believe in chicken fingers, chicken burgers, and diet coke or diet dr. pepper. To get these kids rolling I will make sure they have a 1 year supply of chicken fingers at their house.

Ultimately if I can get these young souls to start following these rules and live by these rules I think we will have some very successful players joining the league soon.

Well what we are going to do for the kids is a little field trip to a bunch of games. First we will be flying across the world to discover a new way of playing hockey and we'll be watching some european hockey games. They play the game a bit different than their north american counter leagues so we want to teach the kids the balance of a physical and skilled game. Obviously we have a a chartered portal gun so we waste no time on air fare or travel so we get there the second the game starts. After the game we will portal back to the home land and start playing a friendly pickup game of ball hockey. The kids will receive a reward win or lose and everybody is gonna have a great time. Late at night we will be taking the kids to a rave. This is a safe rave and will be perfectly safe and the kids will learn how to pump up before a hardcore game.
