For Jonathan Mercer, the moments before any big game, it’s calm in his mind. To be a great defenseman, you have to have poise with the puck and not get shook up in moments like this. Getting back into regular season action in the SMJHL is no easy task, but Mercer is well aware of the pressure on him, as well as the pressure that is looming around the St. Louis Scarecrows to improve in the SMJHL standings, as well as the playoff race. The nerves are always there for Jonathan Mercer, but he calms himself down by going over in his head about what the plan is tonight, who he will be primarily deployed against, and their tendencies. When Mercer is on his game, he’s borderline unbeatable on the back end while being able to jump into the play, but when he loses focus, he’s prone to make mistakes and perhaps cost his team a goal. 157.

"Did I turn off the gas before I left home?" Those were just 10 of the words going through Julian Flörsch's mind in the minutes before he had to step onto the ice. From the moment he set foot in the arena on this first gameday, Julian's head was a hodgepodge of random thoughts, mental notes and uncontrollable internal monologues. Completely zoomed out of the outside world, and in his own little bubble, the young Swiss Falcon was zoning in on his own warmup and not paying much attention to anything his new GM, co-GM or co-players had to say. He was just concious enough to see he had a D-spot on the first line for the season start, but other than that his mind raced from "What am I going to eat today" to "Who was the actor playing Robin Hood again?". His mind doesnt quiet down until his blades touch the ice, at which point it goes blank and intuition takes over.

Here were are, its opening night. After a par rookie season with the Yukon Malamutes. I took the off season to heart knowing I could do better. I trained almost every day for the whole off season. All that work comes down to this moment. I look down see my skates on the crisp freshly painted blue line. The anthem singer proceeds to start. Nerves, chill everything rushes your body at the one time. The crowd sings along with the anthem at the home barn. I close my eyes to try to keep straight. This is it. I am living my dream. All the work I and done threw out my life. I love my team with the Yukon Malamutes, but the end goal is to be called up to the Toronto North Stars and play in the SHL. The anthem singer closes out the song and you sake around your zone and put the bucket back on. "Its Game Time".

Being on a rebuilding team is not easy, to say the least, especially being one of the prospects that has been touted as the next generation for the team. That has been what Jonathon Hagan was facing on his first opening night in Montreal. Now that pressure remains, except amped up by the addition of big pieces to the Patriotes during the offseason. Dwayne Gretzky, a veteran forward who can light the lamp with the best in the league, and Sconnie McHits, an up and coming star winger, now stand on the blue line with Hagan as the anthem plays. While they surely feel some pressure themselves, Hagan can't help but feel like he is the leader of the youth movement, and has to prove himself this year. Between higher expectations, and a poor couple of seasons for himself, Hagan knows that if he doesn't start producing, and showing the league the force that Montreal is becoming, he could be in deep trouble himself.

The off-season is finally over, teams are ready to hit the ice for the first time in front of their rowdy fans and they all have festivities planned from fireworks to smoke machines, all of them draw huge crowds and are well received, except for what Quebec City decided to do this season. As we know the Citadelles are very proud of their owl branding, you'll hear "hoot hoot" all over the city, there is a massive owl statue in front of the arena and lets not forget about the owl under the ice. Well our wonderful owl loving friends decided that on opening night this season they would release a whole flock of ban owls in the arena like a bunch of doves. Now the first question that comes to mind is "who the hell thought this was a good idea?" fans all over the arena were left covered in owl crap, talon marks, one was somehow stolen. We reached out to the Citadelles about this incident but they declined to comment.

Maybe stressed? Are there specific people or moments that come to their mind? Do they need to settle down in a moment like this to play their best? If so, how? Or are you the type of player with ice in your veins that thrives in exciting moments like this? (150+ words) Rafael knew that after a long off-season, that being back to play on ice was still a nerve wrecking experience, there was no doubt in his mind that this would continue to be the case. His appearance in the SHL had been one which he thought overdue after having decided that he would stick with the J for a season longer after his contract had ended. This was big boy and girl territory and his absence had been something which was for him to internally worry about. Performance was key and he was keen to impress his new team, Edmonton Blizzard, after having been taken on by chance for his first season with the SHL. It is a challenge but a challenge in which he ultimately is excited to face; training has ramped up in his spare time with the lead up to his first shift after being declared a free agent. Rafa could hear the crowd, he could hear the excitement building up and he could feel his foot bouncing up and down beneath him as he glanced out into the bright lights and the rink. It's an opportunity that might not come again and he's urged to make the most of it. (205 words)

Well, this year's opening ceremony/home opener thing is extra exciting for Lias, who is going into his rookie year in Winnipeg after serving his four years in the SMJHL. One of the age-old traditions is to make the rookie skate a lap alone during warmups in his first game, but Lias was lucky enough to have been called up for a few games last season, so he had already gotten that out of the way by the time this season rolled around and he was called up for good. So instead he just got to chill and enjoy things. It was a lot of fun because the Aurora have a fresh new logo for this season, and a cute new mascot who was introduced to all of the fans, complete with one of those really cool 3D shows on the ice. This year it was a really cool projection with the actual aurora (like, you know, in the sky), and a polar bear looking very regal, before Stardust the polar bear mascot with Ziggy Stardust makeup in Winnipeg colors, came out and got the crowd incredibly pumped for the season.

Shoyo Hinata is a man that like to do things big. So when he was given the chance to organize the opening night he was really happy. The first thing that he would do is gather some lava from a volcano. He would place the lava in huge barrels on each side of the player exit. (and some on the visitor team bench but that is a secret). He would than get Outkast to perform I like the way you move. Finally Shoyo Hinata would contact Albus Dumbledore and ask to burrow his pet phoenix. The player of the Inferno would get out between barrels of laval, while Outkast sing and the phoenix fly. Pablo, Puddle and Angus would be on the phoenix. They would graciously land on the ice for the official faceoff. While all this happened shoyo hinata and Jeziak would do a fire eater show while skating at max speed around the ice.

When the owner gave me the green light to make what I want for the opening ceremony, I was so hype! To start, real lives Elks will be outside the arena so kids can feed them and ride them. Some local music bands will be performing at the entrance to the arena to entertain our fans. Our staff will be in charge of giving a commemoration item (a hat with a pair of antlers on it) to all our fan before they enter the arena as well. Once all our fans have entered our arena and are seated, we will begging the pregame show. For the occasion, “Les trois accords”, a Canadian group, will perform their song “Saskatchewan” in honor of our province of origin. After the musical performance, the players will take the ice and we will do a mini skills competition (speed skating, precision shooting, slap shot speed, etc.). Finally, after all that, we will get ready for the ceremonial puck drop which will be done by our owner.
Getting ready because there is only 364 days before the next hockey team selection

the atlanta inferno have gathered many live animals but these live animals are actually all current or former members of the inferno roster - very much in the spirit of team culture here @leviadan! the opening ceremony consisted of these animals all hitting the ice at the same time and gallivanting about on the ice as they are wont to do. Eko van otter slipped and slided his slick old (retired) body around the ice. Philippe-eko eel (prospect for atlanta inferno) was very long and extended slippin and slidin'. There was also nashy (not part of atlanta but Anton's friend) who barked and growled at the other animals. there was a Beaver (beaver) and also who could forget the best animal in the league, stevens award winning Puddles Of Duck @Z-Whiz - he flew around and soared high into the air and dropped a poopy onto the ice it went splat. We also saw an appearance from Sakro the Dog @sakrosankt. and there was a binko @goldenglutes.
At the end of the opening extravaganza, the players returned to the bench and stopped acting like animals and instead started acting like Normal Guys and they got ready to play their hockey game of hockey.

For the opening night at the LA Panthers home ice, we decided that hockey should belong to everyone who enjoys it, not only for those who can afford it. So we made all regular ticket prices half-off, not including the skyboxes. We also gave everyone a free meal ticket which included a beverage, to get the full experience. Other than that there was nothing much going on during the opening night, except that we contacted the local circus and were able to rent their lion tamer and few of his companions to escort Panthers legend Philipp Winter to give a speech in the opening ceremony on the red carpet we laid out on just for those people. Winter was also allowed to sing the national anthem, although it came out very wonky cause the head technician was still on his summer vacation for having a long offseason with the Panthers squad, but other than that it all went pretty fine |
