Yeah, I'm back for the first time in a long while with more list media!
I've been looking at doing an article like this for a long time, and I figure that as my player approaches the sunset of his career, it was finally time to look back and take stock of what is possibly considered one of the better classes to ever join the Simulation Hockey League. Back when I first joined the site, before getting drafted into the SMJHL and before I knew what I was talking about (it's highly debatable that I know what I'm talking about even now), I wrote a media piece that took every player in the class of S55, looked at their build, and assigned a completely arbitrary grade based on what I, at the time, thought were the most important stats for their position. I also took into account whether they were a new user or a recreate and how much money they had in their bank account, up to a point. We were a class that created just as Covid-19 was starting to shut down the world (the SMJHL Draft was on May 4, 2020), so we had a large bump in the numbers as people tried to figure out what to do with all their time at home, and it resulted in one of the largest classes in recent memory, with more than 100 prospects created pre-draft, and more than 70 prospects drafted into the SMJHL. It took forever to write ~100 words on each prospect, but I was committed, mostly because I wanted the big payout from the 2x draft media bonus. SMJHL S54 Draft Class Scouting and Prospect Review I also wrote a Pre-SHL Draft Media piece that ranked the top 50 prospects by TPE. I had more knowledge about what made a good player/user, so the rankings, even though it's sorted by TPE, the blurbs of info are a little more useful. S55 SHL Draft Class Analysis - Top 50 Prospects by TPE A few seasons ago, the class of Season 55 hit regression for the first time. It was earlier than we expected due to the regression changes that were announced by HO at the time, but most of us took it in stride. I wanted to take a look back at my article and see what each player has accomplished before they started truly declining. I managed to snag the peak TPE on player pages before regression hit, but it may not be the exact peak TPE. This time, I’m not ignoring the goalies that were created for this class either! This article will be sorted by Peak TPE, but I’ll have the rankings listed for each player. Peak TPE numbers will be taken as close to pre-regression as possible, but may not reflect actual peak TPE. The player status reflects if the player is still in the league, not the user activity. There are some users that are inactive whose players are still active. Those that have retired or gone IA will only be touched on only briefly or not at all. For those of you who I teased with this article before we actually hit regression, I’m sorry it’s so late, but better late than never, amirite? Notes: - Stats and averages were taken with about a week left to play in S67, and I'm too lazy to go back through and update them. For most players, the numbers wouldn't change anyway. - Ties in TPE are then ordered by SHL Draft Position. - Only people who both earned and applied TPE are counted - If your player page never got updated, you didn't make it Class of S55 Quick Stats Total Pre-Draft Prospects: 113 Players that never earned/applied TPE: 45 S54 SMJHL Drafted Players: 72 S55 SHL Drafted Players: 65 Current Active Players (End of S67, before retirements): 20 (19 above 300 TPE) Players that broke 2000 TPE: 9 1. Liam Slate - Right Wing - @Tylar Prospect Ranking: 7 SMJHL Draft Position: 1 -  SHL Draft Position: 18 -  Status: Active Peak TPE: 2128 Slate took the early lead in TPE for the Class of 55, and never gave it up. Breaking 2K TPE is impressive, but Slate took it a step further and broke 2100 TPE, which I don’t think is even possible anymore with the changes to regression. Slate started his career with a Toronto team that was overshadowed in a Great Lakes division that contained Buffalo and Hamilton, played a season with Edmonton, and now plays for a Seattle team that look like cup favorites in Season 67. He’s averaging 58 points, 37 blocks, and 83 hits per season, showing that his offensive skillset is truly something to be reckoned with. 2. Theo Kondos - Left Wing - @Ohtaay Prospect Ranking: 5 SMJHL Draft Position: 6 -  SHL Draft Position: 5 -  Status: Active Peak TPE: 2103 Kondos is the only other member of the Season 55 class to break 2100 TPE, an absolutely incredible feat. While he’s not fighting regression as hard as his classmates, he’s still top 5 in the class, and his career has been nothing short of spectacular. Kondos spent his first 7 seasons playing for the Texas Renegades, helping them win the Challenge Cup in both Season 59 and Season 62, and reach the Finals in Season 61. He now plays for Chicago, and is trying to win another cup with one of the powerhouses of the West. His career average of 66 points per season is absolutely mind-blowing, and is the highest in the class by a wide margin. 3. Ryu Jones - Left Wing - @SFresh3 Prospect Ranking: 61 SMJHL Draft Position: 47 -  SHL Draft Position: 3 - Status: Active Peak TPE: 2093 Jones has been battling for second place in the TPE rankings with a few other members of the Season 55 class, and cleared the 2K TPE mark with ease, almost hitting 2100 at his peak. He started his career in Toronto with Liam Slate, but they struggled to compete with the rest of the power struggle that was Hamilton and Buffalo at the top of the division. He’s spent time with Baltimore, and now plays for Chicago as they try and make another run at the Challenge Cup from the West. He’s got a class runner-up 58 points per season average at this point, which isn’t surprising from one of the best earners in the class. 4. Daniil Nikiforov - Center - @DELIRIVM Prospect Ranking: 55 SMJHL Draft Position: 22 -  SHL Draft Position: 28 -  Status: Retired Peak TPE: 2053 Nikiforov really showed the definition of “steal”, being drafted to the SHL late in the second round to Baltimore, and breaking the 2K TPE barrier. He played 10 seasons for Baltimore before retirement, and stuck with them through their rebuild in the late 50’s and early 60’s to help them become a powerhouse in the East. He averaged just over 55 points per season, which is excellent considering the Platoon weren’t very good for most of his career. 5. Lord Raiden - Center - @"Jumbobone19" Prospect Ranking: 48 SMJHL Draft Position: 54 -  SHL Draft Position: 20 - Status: Active Peak TPE: 2044 Lord Raiden has had a career in Baltimore that (unsurprisingly) mirrors the ups and downs of the team as a whole. Joining the Platoon in Season 57, Raiden didn’t break 40 points in a season until Season 60 (43 points), but since then hasn’t dropped below 50 points in a season except once (45 in Season 66). Another member of the 2K club, Raiden has been a strong presence for the Platoon, leading the way through both the hard times and the good times. 6. Walton Stromberg - Center - @sulovilen Prospect Ranking: 64 SMJHL Draft Position: 25 -  SHL Draft Position: 22 -  Status: Active Peak TPE: 2042 Stromberg is another member of the 2K TPE club, and has been absolutely incredible for the Pride over the course of his career. Nominated for the Jeff Dar Award for Best Two Way Forward in Season 63, Stromberg has been one of San Francisco’s best Forwards for many more seasons than just that. An absolute steal in the second round of the draft, Stromberg has a strong case for having his number retired in San Francisco, if not for the Hall of Fame. 7. Guðmundur Kristjánsson - Right Wing - @Fluw Prospect Ranking: 11 SMJHL Draft Position: 5 - SHL Draft Position: 11 -  Peak TPE: 2034 Kristjánsson has been a stud, and a bit of a journeyman, playing for 3 different teams (New England, Chicago, and now Winnipeg), and playing Center instead of Wing during his cup-winning stint in Chicago. He’s part of the 2K club as well, which is unsurprising given Fluw’s involvement in the site, but he’s had a hell of a career. He’s averaged an incredible 56 points per season, breaking the point per game mark 3 times so far (all 3 were with Chicago). 8. Axel Foley - Left Defense - @Mazatt Prospect Ranking: 21 SMJHL Draft Position: 10 -  SHL Draft Position: 10 -  Status: Active Peak TPE: 2020 Foley was a force for Edmonton for 8 seasons, where he hit the 2K TPE mark before regression, though his best statistical season (so far) was Season 66 with the Tampa Bay Barracuda, where he put up 35 points, 194 blocks, and 74 hits. Truly one of the stars of the Season 55 class, he was also one of the founders of the Beans Hockey Network (RIP), and was a force to be reckoned with when it came to ferreting out information on upcoming drafts. 9. Rikard Bjerg - Right Defense - @AgentSmith630 Prospect Ranking: 30 SMJHL Draft Position: 2 - SHL Draft Position: 1 - Status: Active Peak TPE: 2002 Not to toot my own horn, but Bjerg is probably the most notable defenseman from the Class of Season 55. With a peak just over 2K TPE, a 4x Nominee and 2x Winner of the Bojo Biscuit Award for Best Defensive Defenseman, and 3x Nominee for the Scott Stevens Award for Best Defenseman, Bjerg has been a rock for the San Francisco Pride through their rebuild and into their recent success. I’m super happy with the career Bjerg has had, and will be satisfied with retirement, whenever that comes in the near future. 10. Colin Lambert - Left Defense - @rum_ham Prospect Ranking: 75 SMJHL Draft Position: 7 -  SHL Draft Position: 2 -  Status: Active Peak TPE: 1957 Don’t let the fact that Lambert couldn’t quite hit the 2K TPE mark distract you from him being one of the best defensemen of the class. He’s been absolutely incredible for Tampa Bay, averaging 36 points, 92 blocks, and 66 hits per season so far, and he’s a huge part of why the Barracuda have seen so much success over the past few seasons. He’s also one of the founding members of the Bean Hockey Network, and is an incredible locker room presence from what I hear. 11. Igor Victory - Left Defense - @Wearingabear Prospect Ranking: 92 SMJHL Draft Position: 48 - SHL Draft Position: 12 - Status: Active Peak TPE: 1943 Victory, while he hasn’t quite lived up to his name by winning a cup, has helped Philadelphia become a force to be reckoned with in the East after heading to the expansion team in Season 60. His 10 seasons in the SHL have been impressive, and he almost hit the 2K TPE mark before regression. His career averages of 47 points, 82 blocks and 97 hits show the strength of a defenseman who’s willing and very much able to play both ends of the ice. 12. Teddy Murphy (Park) - Left Defense - @trashae Prospect Ranking: 31 SMJHL Draft Position: 29 -  SHL Draft Position: 6 - Status: Active Peak TPE: 1859 Murphy underwent a name change part way through his career, but that didn’t stop him from being one of the better earners in the class, peaking at just under 1900 TPE. He started his career in Baltimore, and held strong through the tough seasons there to help them become a truly scary team before he went over to Seattle. Now he’s helping them compete in a stacked Pacific division and be one of the cup favorites as we enter into the postseason. 13. Nathan Thomas - Right Defense - @KaleSalad Prospect Ranking: 89 SMJHL Draft Position: 51 - SHL Draft Position: 55 - Status: Active Peak TPE: 1820 Thomas began his SHL career with Texas, who drafted him in the 4th round, then almost immediately traded him to San Francisco in the time of the interim GM’s wild trading and teardown. San Francisco then (foolishly) let him go to Philadelphia in the Season 60 expansion draft. Speaking from experience, Kale is one of the best locker room guys you could have, and he’s proven it by not only helping Philadelphia become a powerhouse team, but also stepping up to become one of the GMs. Thomas has had a stellar career as well, averaging 33 points, 105 blocks, and 82 hits per season so far, and he’s still going strong. 14. Nicolae Antonescu - Goalie - @Rancidbudgie Prospect Ranking: Unranked (Goalie) SMJHL Draft Position: 26 - SHL Draft Position: 27 - Status: Active (Retiring in S67) Peak TPE: 1779 Antonescu is synonymous with goalkeeping in San Francisco, and he’s the one surviving active Goalie from the Class of 55. A superstar in the net for San Francisco for his entire career, Antonescu is retiring at the end of Season 67. With a HoF-worthy .916 career save percentage, 28 career shutouts, and 15873 career saves, it’s hard to think that The Pride will have a different starter in net next season, and I’ll speak from experience that I know that San Francisco will not be the same without him guarding the crease. 15. Zakkira Diporov - Right Wing - @TheSparkyDee Prospect Ranking: 71 SMJHL Draft Position: 53 -  SHL Draft Position: 21 -  Status: Active (Retiring in S67) Peak TPE: 1759 Diporov started his SHL career in Winnipeg, and played for the Aurora for 4 seasons before being traded to New Orleans in Season 61. The Spectres did their best to tank in those first few seasons with Diporov, but they slowly brought it back, and have in part some solid defensive play from Zakkira to thank. A career average of 31 points, 97 blocks, and 85 hits per season are solid for a defenseman that never really played for a contender. With his retirement looming at the end of the season, Diporov can look back at a career that he can be proud of and be at peace. 16. Adrik Baranov - Left Defense - @Jorec Prospect Ranking: 2 SMJHL Draft Position: 35 - SHL Draft Position: 16 - Status: Active Peak TPE: 1683 Baranov has been a solid defender for both Winnipeg, where he played his first 4 seasons, and for Minnesota, where he’s played the past 6. He’s been more of your typical defensive defenseman, never breaking more than 36 points, but always having great hits and shots blocked, peaking in Season 65 with 265 blocks, and in Season 62 with 101 hits. 17. Chris Goodname - Right Defense - @kikish18 Prospect Ranking: 83 SMJHL Draft Position: 9 - SHL Draft Position: 9 -  Status: Active Peak TPE: 1662 Goodname has been a stalwart presence for the Calgary Dragons for his entire career. Even though the team has been up and down during his tenure there, Goodname has been a steady presence on the blue line for them, averaging 23 points, 115 blocks, and 83 hits per season. 18. Devin Basher - Right Wing - @HanTheMan_ Prospect Ranking: 46 SMJHL Draft Position: 12 - SHL Draft Position: 7 -  Status: Active Peak TPE: 1626 The Hamilton Steelhawks got a gem in Basher, who has been a part of their success since Season 58. Basher helped them win a cup in his rookie season, and again in Season 61 and 63. His averages of 51 points, 37 blocks, and 106 hits shows that he’s versatile but doesn’t give up offensive performance for defensive pressure. While Hamilton is having a few rough seasons as they undergo a retooling, Basher is having one of his better seasons yet. 19. Alexander Oscarsson - Right Wing - @Zema Prospect Ranking: 26 SMJHL Draft Position: 21 - SHL Draft Position: 8 - Status: Retired Peak TPE: 1605 Oscarsson played only one season with the team that drafted him (New England) before being traded to San Francisco, where he became one of the anchors of the rebuilding team. He was not only a great presence in the locker room, but a steady and solid presence on the ice. He made his presence known on both ends of the ice, averaging 27 points (high of 40 in Season 63), 145 blocks (high of 219 in Season 59), and 95 hits (high of 135 in Season 64). 20. Conner Hutton - Right Defense - @overdoo Prospect Ranking: 85 SMJHL Draft Position: 13 - SHL Draft Position: 4 -  Status: Active Peak TPE: 1513 Hutton came up to the SHL earlier than most of the class, playing for New Orleans for the first time in Season 56. Unfortunately, he missed the era of true Spectre dominance by one season (they won the cup in Season 54 and went to the finals again in Season 55), but still had a respectable career, with an average of 25 points, 99 blocks, and 73 hits per season. He’s currently with an Los Angeles team that’s in a bit of a downturn, but that’s not stopping him from having one of his best seasons yet. 21. Asclepius Perseus Flitterwind - Right Wing - @CaptainCrazy Prospect Ranking: 1 SMJHL Draft Position: 30 - SHL Draft Position: 47 -  Status: Retired Peak TPE: 1476 Flitterwind had one of the best names of the class, and was ranked 1st in my Prospect ranking article due to being a recreate, having a good bank balance, and having a (supposedly) solid build, though it was clear that the GMs in both leagues didn’t take my arbitrary rankings into consideration as he fell to the end of round 3 in both the SMJHL and SHL drafts. He was drafted by Hamilton, was traded, and played all 7 of his SHL seasons with Minnesota, leaving the ice after Season 64. 22. James Kimanje - Right Wing - @.Laser Prospect Ranking: 43 SMJHL Draft Position: 70 - SHL Draft Position: Undrafted (Drafted in S56 to )Status: Retired Peak TPE: 1339 Kimanje took a different path to the SHL than the rest of us, as he was passed over in the Season 55 SHL draft due to inactivity, but then was drafted by Toronto in the third round of the Season 56 draft, and then was traded to Winnipeg. It was a good pickup for them, as Kimanje broke 1300 TPE before his retirement, and served as an expansion pick in Season 60, going to Philadelphia in the 10th round of the expansion draft. 23. Johnny Shuffleboard - Right Defense - @mee Prospect Ranking: 80 SMJHL Draft Position: 3 - SHL Draft Position: 38 -  Status: Inactive Peak TPE: 1311 Shuffleboard had an interesting career, and one of the largest changes in draft positions for a player who was in both drafts, falling from 3rd in the SMJHL draft to 38th in the SHL due to him being inactive (due to vacation) during the scouting period before the draft. Buffalo ended up with a steal, then they traded him to Minnesota. Shuff hit 1300 TPE and played for Edmonton and Winnipeg before going inactive and being dropped after Season 64. 24. Jöörgüštrâäd DuBølk - Left Defense - @MCP_ Prospect Ranking: 16 SMJHL Draft Position: 8 - SHL Draft Position: 14 - Status: Retired Peak TPE: 1198 DuBølk had a relatively slow career, never breaking 1200 TPE, but Tampa Bay, Montreal, and Winnipeg all made the most of it. His best season was his final year with Winnipeg, where he had 29 points, 101 blocks, and 126 hits. 25. Zelma Zuntnere - Left Wing - @Jogurtaa Prospect Ranking: 4 SMJHL Draft Position: 33 - SHL Draft Position: 37 - Status: Inactive Peak TPE: 1062 Zuntnere barely broke 1000 TPE, but was able to have a solid career as a journeyman forward, where he played for four different teams during an eight year career. Drafted by Winnipeg, he played 2 seasons for the Aurora before being picked up by Philadelphia in the Season 60 expansion draft. He then went to the other expansion team, playing for Montreal for 3 seasons before finishing out with Calgary in Season 65. 26. Stan Q. Next - Center - @iamslm22 Prospect Ranking: 8 SMJHL Draft Position: 39 - SHL Draft Position: 39 -  Status: Active Peak TPE: 1049 Next has played for 8 seasons in the big leagues, though they haven't been 8 consecutive seasons. After starting his career with four seasons in Atlanta, Stan took a break in Seasons 62 and 63, and then rejoined the league in Season 64 as a Free Agent with Hamilton, where he played for 3 seasons before shifting over to Buffalo for this season. His career average of 34 points per season is pretty solid for a player that took two years off to pursue other hobbies. 27. Mack Daddy - Center - @Mack Prospect Ranking: 20 SMJHL Draft Position: 24 - SHL Draft Position: 30 - Status: Retired Peak TPE: 976 Mack was not picky about where he played, not for how long, as proven by him playing for 4 different teams (Calgary, New Orleans, Winnipeg, and Montreal) in 6 seasons, and his two seasons with Winnipeg are separated by a season with Montreal. 28. Alex Marshall - Right Wing - @DonutDefender Prospect Ranking: 13 SMJHL Draft Position: 41 - SHL Draft Position: 26 - Status: Inactive Peak TPE: 966 Marshall played for 4 different teams in 7 seasons, embracing the journeyman ideals after finishing his third season with Minnesota. He played for Winnipeg, Toronto (where he had his best season with 35 points), and finished with Calgary before calling it quits in Season 65 with a career average of 22 points, 45 blocks, and 136 hits. 29. TURG TURG - Left Wing - @ThisSeemsFishy Prospect Ranking: Unranked SMJHL Draft Position: 38 - SHL Draft Position: 17 - Status: Inactive Peak TPE: 935 TURG TURG had one of the best names in the class, but unfortunately didn’t make it past 1000 TPE. He was drafted by Tampa Bay, was traded to and played with Los Angeles until the expansion draft in Season 60, when he was picked up by Philadelphia. He ended his career in Calgary after spending a season with the other expansion team in Montreal. The caveman skater got to see a large part of the hockey world before going inactive. 30. Peter Ramsey - Goalie - @Hoovuh Prospect Ranking: Unranked (Goalie) SMJHL Draft Position: 19 - SHL Draft Position: 42 - Status: Retired Peak TPE: 883 Ramsey was the only other goalie in this class to break 500 TPE and have a solid, albeit short, career at the SHL level. He was a starter for Edmonton in his second season, where he won 34 of his 56 games played and had a very respectable 0.901 save percentage. In all, he only played 4 seasons with 3 different teams before retiring after season 60. 31. Jason Desrouleaux - Left Wing - @Gooney Prospect Ranking: 9 SMJHL Draft Position: 40 - SHL Draft Position: 31 - Status: Retired Peak TPE: 831 Desrouleaux must have been distracted by another career, probably in music or something, as he didn't really earn all that well in the SHL, peaking at just over 800 TPE. He played 3 seasons with Winnipeg before a season with Texas, then retiring to focus elsewhere after Season 60. 32. Young Logo - Right Wing - @Loganjj21 Prospect Ranking: 3 SMJHL Draft Position: 46 - SHL Draft Position: 52 - Status: Inactive Peak TPE: 645 33. Ryan Rieley - Left Wing - @Brandon Prospect Ranking: 14 SMJHL Draft Position: 34 - SHL Draft Position: 15 - Status: Inactive Peak TPE: 572 34. Pavel Kharlamov - Right Wing - @RippleLuck Prospect Ranking: 10 SMJHL Draft Position: 69 - SHL Draft Position: 23 - Status: Retired Peak TPE: 572 35. Hubert Andrews - Center - @hughesab Prospect Ranking: Unranked SMJHL Draft Position: 57 - SHL Draft Position: 41 - Status: Inactive Peak TPE: 532 36. Blunt Man - Goalie - @Obsidian311 Prospect Ranking: Unranked (Goalie) SMJHL Draft Position: 43 - SHL Draft Position: 62 - Status: Retired Peak TPE: 436 Blunt Man smoked his last in Season 57 after playing 4 seasons in the SMJHL for the Carolina Kraken, 3 as a starter. In those three seasons, he had a mind-blowing 0.914 SV%, and he holds the 3rd best Save Percentage in a Season in the 50-Game FHM Era with a .920 in Season 55. Truly a shame we never got to see him toke it up in the SHL. 42. Lonnie O'Donoghue - Right Defense - @Good_Ole_Kimmy Prospect Ranking: 19 SMJHL Draft Position: 52 - SHL Draft Position: 19 Status: Retired Peak TPE: 435 43. James Hagan - Left Wing - @CampinKiller Prospect Ranking: 6 SMJHL Draft Position: 55 - SHL Draft Position: 71 - Status: Retired Peak TPE: 405 44. Sven Gunnar - Center - @Southie Prospect Ranking: 62 SMJHL Draft Position: 37 - SHL Draft Position: 32 - Status: Retired Peak TPE: 380 45.
