S71 PT#5: That's a Wrap
#16

For opening night in our brand new hockey stadium, we want to create a truly unforgettable experience for our fans. To add a memorable frosting to the occasion, we will organize a breathtaking pre-game light show and laser display. The stadium lights will dim, and a spectacular array of synchronized laser lights will fill the arena, painting intricate patterns and designs across the ice and the surrounding environment. Accompanied by an electrifying soundtrack, the light show will create a mesmerizing atmosphere, capturing the fans' attention and building anticipation for the game. The laser lights will dance and interact with the music, creating a dynamic visual spectacle that fans will remember for years to come. To make it even more special, we will incorporate fan engagement by providing interactive wristbands or LED sticks to each attendee. These devices will synchronize with the light show, allowing fans to actively participate by becoming part of the visual display. The audience's movements and cheers will be translated into vibrant bursts of light, immersing everyone in an awe-inspiring display of unity and excitement. This opening night light show will not only create an unforgettable memory for our fans but also set the tone for the exhilarating experiences they can expect in our new hockey stadium. It will ignite a sense of anticipation and create a buzz around our team, establishing a strong connection between the fans and the exhilarating atmosphere of the games to come.

Louise St. Martin doesn't care much for overextravagant pomp and circumstance, and tries to avoid any requests for opening night, telling the ownership to go kick bricks every time she is approached.. She doesn't want some over-the-top nonsense, she just wants to drop the damn puck already. Within a few minutes of whatever her teammates cooked up for opening night, Louise starts yearning for the days of the college rink. Was it suboptimal, yes. But it had character and a unique atmosphere, and focused on hockey and hockey only.

This reflects my real-life attitude towards North American sports, for the record. You know how people joke about "le wrong generation"? Yeah, I'm "le wrong sports culture." I don't want fluff or overextravagant presentation, I just wanna watch a sporting event and enjoy it. I'm not here for pro-wrestling gimmicks, if I wanted to watch shit like that I'd just *watch pro-wrestling*. It's one thing if it's organically coming from the fans, but if it's clearly made by ownership or for TV I'm not interested. And I literally wrote an essay in college about my personal preference for older, more character-esque arenas rather than opulent modern palaces.

Creative Prompt:

So, its opening night at the Baltimore Platoon's new arena. The lights are low. The excitement is real. And a military band comes out and begins to play a booming march. On to the ice come the Baltimore Platoon, marching in perfect unison in skates. It is military appreciation night to the next level! The team is wearing special themed jerseys to look like Yankee Civil War uniforms. The local Military Base has been given thousands of free tickets to give out to serving members and retired veterans. Everything is themed in blues or olive green. The onwer of the team is riding to center ice in the cupola of a tank waving a giant American flag. The mascot is duel wielding fully automatic t-shirt cannons like a maniac. Staff have a full air powered civil war style cannon they are launching bundles of t-shirts and swag into the crowd with. It is pandemonium. It is chaos. It is the vision that only Duncan Mackenzie could create.

Listen, if someone wants me to do something that is outside what my requirements are or things that I want to do, I am not going to do it. I am going to make sure that I read my full contract and make it very apparent that this is not something I want to do or something that I will do. I think you need to be as straight up as possible and just make it well known. I don't think it's something that you just go around, you have to take this head on. You have to take this exactly how it comes. This is not something that I will do or I will ever do. I don't mind doing stuff around, but I don't want to do it all the time. I have a real life and a life outside of hockey, so I want to make sure they value my time and personal life. So, that is why I would also say no.

Written Task: The drama is over. Your team will not be moved to Saskatoon, you have a real pro-level arena again, and your owner has stopped asking you to get involved in local politics on his behalf. For now. But he has one last thing to request your input on: the special event for opening night!

What special event, gimmick, promotion, or otherwise memorable frosting will you add to your team's opening night cake in your brand new stadium? What's something your fans will never forget? (150+ words)

If we are going to have a brand spanking new arena we need to have an extravagant opening night. I am thinking we double the entertainment for that one night and get some half time style acts for between periods. 1st period should be some pump up 80s rock band and the second intermission should be a high energy pop act. Outside the arena we should also arrange for a motocross or Monster truck demonstration going on. Adrenaline should be surging through every minute of the experience to the point where the hockey game is almost the calm of the storm. We should showcase our incredible food and beverage stands by having everything open and encourage a wide range of different foods to bring the in the largest crowds. Along side that we should get the finest beers and wines the Okanagan has to showcase and get the beverages rolling. This event should be not only the birth of our new arena but a chapter in the history of Kelowna sports and entertainment. We should have other events looking to us as the new standard in how things are done.

Creative Prompt/Written Task

If I was in charge of the special event for opening night for the Texas Renegades new stadium, I would make sure to go all in on the Renegades and cowboys theme. I would hire a crew of actual cowboys to bring their horses on site, along with rope and cattle. Before the game, the crowd would be treated to an on-ice show of cowboys trying to wrangle the cattle while sliding around the ice. Fans would get a good laugh seeing the cowboys out of their element, and it would give the cowboys some good exposure to the Renegade faithful.

I would also make sure there was a fantastic giveaway. To make it memorable, I would go with the classic Renegades cowboy hat and bandana that we see in the Texas logo. Fans could sport the look of their favorite mascot anywhere they go, and really feel like a true Renegade in and out of the stadium.

Hopefully the combination of a fun show and good giveaway would really get the crowd excited about the new stadium!

Anchor: With construction completed on San Francisco's newest arena, our sports reporter spoke with Pride player and the biggest player advocate for keeping the team in the Bay Area about the companies who bought the naming rights of the stadium and the bands performing opening night.

Reporter: So tell me... what companies bought the naming rights to the arena and do you like them?

Davies: We're so excited to be playing at LucasArts Ice Rink inside of Airbnb Arena. I'm a big fan of both companies.

Reporter: And the team is putting on concerts for opening night; is that correct?

Davies: We worked so hard to keep this team in San Francisco and it just makes me so overjoyed we can make the opening night of our new stadium so big with pre-game and post-game performances from some of the biggest bands that came out of the bay area; Train and Third Eye Blind.

Reporter: I was told by Davies that Train would perform before the game, and Third Eye Blind after.

Anchor: The opening night festivities will begin at 3 pm on October 20th.

PROMPT: Stop asking me for shit

Dear Management,

I feel a need to inform you that while I support your want to have so many theme/appreciation/event nights, I am under no contractual obligation to continue to participate. For me, the straw that broke the camel's back is when you had the Battleborn Lady Rams attempted to educate the fans and the team on penguins. Now I respect penguins more than some; however, I found this promotional night a tad fraught as there were no penguins in attendance. How can we trust this information if no one is there to confirm if what we are told is true?! I also felt the penguin races were offensive on some level. Especially when some of the participants dressed in traditional penguin garb! How are our penguin fans going to root for our team? If management insists that I participate in future promotional events, I ask that the team staff makes attempts of remaining and cultivating cultural sensitivity. Also an additional 1 million to my contract.

Sincerely,
Tommy Saws

Well it is a bit of weird timing to have an opening night of the new arena in the middle of the 1st round of playoffs, but I guess we take whatever we can get to get out of that tiny little arena we were playing in. Since it is the first game of playoffs and the first game in the new arena we decided to do some special give aways, each fan got a base pack bobble head on their seat when getting to the arena. They also fired t-shirt cannons out at the crowd every 30 seconds, even during the game. The cannon was a bit of a distraction to those of us actually trying to play the game, but the fans seemed to love it. We ended up losing pretty big game 1 and I think all the distractions had something to do with it. Maybe game 2 we can tone it down a bit.

Creative task:

In the opening night of the brand new stadium, there would a special event called Hockey Night in Finland. Because William Salming is one of the biggest stars in the SHL and Finland is only country in the world where ice-hockey is the biggest sport alongside Canada, Argonauts would organize a special event which would be fun especially for its Finnish fans because William Salming plays in Seattle and has a lot of fans in Finland. Many people there follow closely Argonauts only because William plays in that team. So, the club would ask some famous Finnish celebrities to travel to Seattle for the opening night to drop the puck and talk with fans during the intermissions. Club would also pay a trip for a three junior hockey teams from Finland to Seattle to watch Salming play in that opening game. Unforgettable experience, for sure. And there would be also Finnish theme in the arena during the match. In the stands people would have blue and white towels which match the colours of Argonauts too somehow.

Creative Prompt:

In honor of opening night in the new arena, we will open the ice to all the fans the week before to write messages to the team on the boards over the ice. We will forgo the ad revenue because our fans are the best in the league and give them an experience that no other team will give their fans. Their messages for the team will stay up for the duration of the season and may even get a feature on TV if play is happening in front of their message! This initiative should uplift the players as they play and remind everyone how important this team is to the fans and the city. Not only that, but how important the fans are to the team as they chase glory for the good of those fans. We are all excited to see what the fans come up with and what we can feature on opening night next week!

It is no great question as to why the club owner is wanting the opinion of JWP: he is a classically trained architect (not one of those tik-tok architects) and an interior designer by force. So of course, JWP's eye for design is unmatched among all the globe. But you're absolutely right, Zerg. This is not in his contract. Therefore, after stretching his people pleasing muscle to its capacity, JWP finally has a sit down with the owner to let him know that the business decisions are affecting his practice and playing performance. But he is happy to continue doing it at a consultant level, but it has to be added to his existing contract or a new contract has to be drawn up. While the owner isn't thrilled about the prospect of paying for the advice (for that was half of the reason for drafting him in the first place), he eventually relents and agrees to offer JWP a contract for his design talents. JWP is currently allowing his lawyer to review the contract before signing it. Will update the story as it develops.
