The Year of the Boats

Enter Season 57 of the Simulation Major Junior Hockey League. We arrive at the legendary season, just a year after Anchorage had finished 2nd in the Northwest, 2nd in the Pacific and 3rd over all in the league. Season 56 also marked the last season for a 50 game season, before ultimately making the jump to the now current 66 game season. It was a great year for the Armada in Season 56. It was the last year that General Manager Ass, Max Brannagan, had in him in the juniors. The team went 29-17-4 and had a 62 points and .620 Winning %. Not too bad to finish out the year. Ultimately in the playoffs they lost to Newfoundland Berserkers in the Conference finals. They just couldn't punch their ticket that season to get them to the Finals.

Now, if you're looking at S56 and looking for Individual awards and performances, I'll stop you right there. The team played well, but couldn't stand up to the likes of Carolina, Nevada, Anaheim, or the Vancouver Whalers. A few players played well and ultimately the Anchorage Armada had two players finish in the top 10 in Points that season, Santtu Rasanen and Theo Kondos. That would be Santtu's last season before finishing his time in the Simulation Major Junior Hockey League.

Now that you have some background as to who they were, let's focus on who the Anchorage Armada Season 57 team is. Keep in mind, the league jumped to 66 game seasons that season. The Armada, under new GM Gabe Johnson, went 42-16-8, for 92 pts that season and a .697 Winning %. Not too bad. The league leader though: Quebec City, who went 49-8-9 and had 107 points. They were the team to beat. QCC had leading points getter, Zdenko Beranek, 3rd place Jst Maro, and 8th best Mikael Koskinen. While ANC only had Slava Petrov break the top 10. However, they played extremely well as a team, led by the one and only Chimkin Tendy who had 33 wins that season, and played with a 2.02 GAA and an incredible .920 SV% and 8 Shutouts. Tendy stood on his head that season.

ANC had a top 6 of Slava Petrov, Theo Kondos, Pablo Salvatici, TURG TURG, Vladmir Petrov and Lemo Pihl, and a D Corps of Gregory Goode, Michael Withecheck, Igor Victory and rookie Bean Beanman.

Now the getting gets good when you start to look at the play off race. Boy was it a doozy that season. Now, back then, all teams got into the playoffs, but the top 4 teams had a bye in the first round. Which meant that Anchorage could sit it out while they patiently watched the St. Louis Scarecrows and Kelowna Knights battle it out. Ultimately, the Crows went 4-3 and advanced to the 2nd round. Now, this is where you might think that Anchorage would be restless and lost some momentum they had from the regular season. Wrong. ANC Swept STL 4-0. Now they have to sit back again and wait for the 2nd round to finish. Now the team is watching out for the battle between the team they lost in the Conference finals last season, Newfoundland, and the current seasons best team, QCC. NLB took QCC to 6 games, but ultimately lost 4-2 that round.

This is where the fun starts. The series between ANC and QCC. THe battle between 1 and 2 in the regular season. Game 1 in QCC, ANC loses 3-2. That's fine, go on the next game and shake it off. And they do, it's a bruiser where ANC wins 5-2 in QCC. Series tied 1-1 heading back to Alaska. The Armada are used to the travel and win 4-2 in game 3. QCC desperate for a win in game 4, in ANC, get what they want and win 3-1. 2-2 series going back across the country. The crowed in Quebec helps support the Citadelles and QCC wins 6-3. In a must win game back home in Anchorage, the Armada pull it out and win 3-2 in OT. It's a series for the history books. Both teams make the long journey back across the continent and figure out game plans, strategies. Neither coaches really sleep on the flight back to French speaking Canada. Game 7, in QCC, winner goes to the cup finals and more than likely will take this momentum and finish off the patiently waiting Anaheim Outlaws who beat the Whalers 4-1.

Puck drops and it's dominance by Anchorage the entire game. Whatever they did, worked. The Armada cruise to 4-1 victory and head to Anchorage for the start of the cup Finals. The Armada finish off the Outlaws in 5 games, outscoring them 21-9 in the series. Season over and the Armada are your 4 Star Cup Champions.
