S76 PT #4: Changing Stripes Due: Sunday, May 5th @ 11:59 PM PST

I don’t even know if I am currently on an IIHF team. To be honest, I have no idea how that works. I do know, however, that eventually I will be on none other than team U.S. of A. baby, and you don’t need anything other than that. I am a freedom loving patriot and America is the land of the free.

I guess if I was forced to change teams I would go to team Ireland. Their logo is super cool, their voices are funny, and I think gingers are cool. Also I am like half Irish I think in real life so I guess that is kind of some sort of link to them. The only one I really wouldn’t want to be is British because their food is gross and every time I see a picture of a British dish, for a second I think it’s a picture from 1940 when they were at war.

Being a good referee for me is about being consistent and being transparent. First, consistency applies not just to decisions within the game, but across games. Of course, I feel it is innately easier to compare a play from one moment to the next when it was only minutes apart, versus days/weeks/months apart. But the first step is being disciplined to applying the same rule set to the same players, teams, no matter what. And second, you must be transparent with the decisions. If a player asks about a decision, be as clear as possible - don't shrug them off, give a half-baked answer, or worse, not answer at all. We're all on the same team - creating an enjoyable game.

In general, the refs in the SMJHL and SHL are pretty good. However, there's a few baffling decisions. I have seen some rare lack-of-offside calls with a player, or multiple players, 5-10 feet past the blue line... And once I saw a player teleport, and that's gotta be against the rules.

The refs here are a hell of a lot better than the refs that James got used to during his days under Ogun, that’s for sure. Those ref’s would let people get away with anything for the right price. These refs are just a little incompetent, not corrupt. How else would James Howlett manage to only have 30 Penalties in Minutes this season? No, these refs just need some glasses and to eat more carrots.

A good ref is impartial and isn’t afraid to get dirty to see the play. I’m worried that any poor calls are because the refs don’t want to get close to the angry people on the ice with knives on their feet. So my solution: armor. Give the refs at least a gambeson, hopefully chainmail or even plate. That way they can make their presence known on the ice without putting themselves in harms way and get close enough to see and make the calls.

Of course Sonja has been dreaming about making it big and representing Norway on the biggest stages ever since she was a small kid. And the big stages does include the IIHF so if she was not forced to there is little to no chance why Sonja would want to switch, after all she feels like it is a privilege to play for Norway. However if she really had to switch her IIHF nation for some reasons, she has other options too. One of the biggest which is Germany. After all her grandmother was German so there is some German blood in Sonja which makes her eligible to choose Germany in the IIHF if she has to choose a different nation than Norway. Of course Sonja also has some connection to Germany itself as she visited the country quite a lot of times as a kid and even when she was well into her teens.

Option 1

Henri Losanov is my 3rd player, I now know the best strategy when it comes to choose your IIHF country. You don't want to be unassigned, you won't be able to leave after commiting somewhere. I would not recommend choosing Canada, Sweden or the USA if you're not a max earner, it will be very hard to make the team with their great talent pool. I went with France this time around as the GM look active in the transfer market and even though it's a small nation, it is full of well known and like users. Right now, if they would somehow land an another goalie prospect close to my draft year or TPE I would probably transfer to Czechia or Latvia, both GMs doing a tremendous job and taking it seriously. I've been with Russia and Switzerland in the past, I'd rather try something new than go back there.

option 1: I would not play for any country other than Sweden in IIHF, almost entirely due to the fact that it would be illegal for me to do so since I'm fed head there, and I kind of have to play for Sweden. But honestly, it would just feel weird playing anywhere else. I think my interest in all things Swedish has run parallel to my interest in hockey - I started getting super into hockey and started learning Swedish at the same time, so it would feel so strange to play fake hockey anywhere else. I don't have anything against most of the other IIHF teams except for maybe the ones who constantly get away with tampering, but I am happy where I am and I don't think I'd have much interest in IIHF if I had to be forced to play for another team that I don't really have any attachment to or reason to be interested in.

Option 2 - 172 word count

I Think the refs in our league, and any league to be honest, do a decent job, or at least a good enough job, after all they are only human. But I’ve got some radical ideas. Let’s get rid of the refs on the ice all together, after all, most of the time they just get in the way or miss calls. So I’m proposing that we go the route of the future, let’s place cameras all around the rink that have analytics and/or AI that can help us make the right call every time. Now I know this could have some issues, but we would need to have a team watch the camera to verify calls are correct, but I believe this would reduce miss call and wrong calls 99%. I also believe this could help to speed games up because we wouldn’t need to wait on the refs to verify calls. But we would need to find out how the puck drops would work. That’s a problem for another day.

Option 1

If Dag-Otto was tossed out of Sweden and had to choose which other nation to become a citizen of, it'd likely be Finland. He doesn't have family in Finland or anything like that. He just really enjoyed his time there while visiting a couple of years back. The people and culture seem really nice. Not too different from Sweden, unsurprisingly. And in the same sense both countries are crazy about hockey and have had a friendly rivalry since the beginning of IIHF.

It's also helped by the fact that the international WJC tournament has in recent years required the Nordic countries to merge and play under a single, unified flag. So if Dag-Otto had to play with Finland, or any other Nordic team, in the IIHF he'd likely bump into many of the players he played with during his WJC years. It wouldn't be much different from what he's already been doing.

Option 1

If I had to play for another nation starting today, it would probably be another nation that is more needy for defence-man. One of those teams that is D needy is Germany, which also happens to be a place where my GM also is at which would give me a couple reasons to head over. Another reason I would want to play for a nation like Germany as well is because playing for a underdog compared to some of these big dogs would be more interesting season after season, especially trying to recruit newer creates. One reasons I joined Finland originally was because of having a bunch great players, and having a chance to win year after year, but growing a nation would also be interesting. Finally the jerseys for the nation are also another reason to play for them, they are definitely one of the best of all of the nations.

A good referee is really hard to find. The most important part of a referee’s job is go try and be almost entirely invisible. The best guys in stripes manage the game in a way that allows the players on the ice the ability to have a complete impact on the game. If the game is decided by the players making plays and the referees aren’t noticed by fans on either side, then often that’s the best refereed game. However, it can absolutely go the other direction. If the guys meant to keep the rules of the ice together do NOT control the game, it can get wild. The ability to call just the right calls to keep guys honest and make sure that players are also operating within the rules of the game is really important. We have some really great rules guys when we play in this league. On the other hand, every once in a while we get a poorly officiated game. But, hey, its a very hard job.

Well, when I accepted the invitation to play for the Czechs, it was mostly because they asked first. I was open to other countries but they came around first for me so I did not complain. I did not put much thought into a place where I would play for but I do wish to play for Switzerland one day, honour a little pledge of mine that I did back in Anaheim that was probably wiped out when their server got cleaned up. Generally, though, I think any place works as long as I am able to play for them and not, say, be left behind.

That is pretty much how I feel about it, I guess. I do not even know if I would have a problem with playing with "Independent Russia" or whatever they're called these days, just whatever I get, you see? All good by me, for real.
