An interesting piece of information landed on my desk this morning, concerning what I may safely label "The Future of Hungarian Hockey". Yes, the news has finally made it's way to me, here in Toronto, and the sportspages of the Star. I can now finally, comfortably, introduce to you a player that has been making waves across Central and Eastern Europe.
Born in Budapest, Hungary, Zsigmond "Zsigi" Popovics is the hottest Hungarian prospect since Levente Szuper. A quiet, resilient, and incredibly athletic young man, his career is only just starting out. Attending the Hungarian Army Officer's Academy, he first turned out for the Army team following his commissioning as a Lieutenant into the Hungarian Army Reserves. Following some stellar performances, a chance meeting landed him the opportunity of a lifetime. Now playing for the DVTK Polar Bears in the Hungarian top division, Popovics returned to Budapest for a family visit. There, he met former New England and Ireland goaltender Leo "Bloomey" Bloomfield, in a pub. Bloomfield, now a private detective based in Budapest, was short on money and offered to Popovics his services as an agent. Young Popovics, bored of having to live in Miskolc and having to shoot guns on the weekend, agreed.
Bloomey, being a good friend of mine, subsequently sent me notice of Popovics' intentions to declare for the SMJHL and later the SHL. You read it here first folks. Although fantastic and exciting news, it is still early days. I must caution young Zsigmond that the United States and Canada are not Hungary or Miskolc, and that teams like the Stampede or the Wolfpack are not the Polar Bears or the Hungarian Army team. The stakes could not be higher for the future of Hungarian hockey.
