When Dejana Kaptina and the rest of the rookies walked into the QCC locker room, the rest of the squad gathered to greet them, quite warmly in fact with plenty of claps, hugs, and handshakes. The team in general being quite young, even by junior league standards (with only two major vets on the squad), there wasn't a whole lot of getting shit from the vets for the most part. We had a nice little welcome party complete with more poutine than you could possibly imagine, and age-appropriate drinks. On the practice rink though, things got pretty heated as competitions for spots and ice time heated up. Friendly heat, to be clear, but heat nonetheless. As time goes on and we go through preseason and the early season, that on-ice practice heat will cool off as lines and roles get settled, and the team will be able to progress as one cohesive unit.

“Congrats on going #1 in the draft” is something Earl Biggins thought he’d never hear. Something he’d honestly never thought he dreamed happening until now. Being drafted that high is quite scary and now he has a lot to live up too, a lot to commit too.

Walking into the locker room of the Yukon Malamutes he was greeted quite well, everyone seems super friendly. There is one guy in particular Jeyeff Effo. Earl and Effo hit it off quite well since they share one thing in common. One likes to whip and another like to be whipped. Earl also met the two other draft picks and enjoys their company as well.

On his way out of the locker room He got to chit chat to his new GM and their shared hatred for the Ottaw Highlanders sparked a very good convo and could result into a close relationship down the road. We will find out in the coming weeks how this all unfolds.

Dieter Frühstück was one of 6 new players to be drafted by the Anchorage Armada. As such, he was expecting some sort of welcoming shindig, with a new class of players coming into the team. Frühstück himself was picked 14th overall, with the Armada's second first round pick. When he and his other rookies walked into the locker room, they saw a sight no one should ever see: Gabriel Johnson holding a welcome sign. Frühstück almost ran away before the team's actual GM came in and told him that the senior players on the team were playing a prank by getting Johnson to welcome them. They then had an actual celebration in the team dining hall. Everyone was forced to sing an initiation song... except for Dieter, who without saying a word scared his teammates into letting him by, but just this one time. He is very excited to be a boat.

When Nanashi Mumei first walked into the Great Falls locker room, she was a bit nervous by how large the locker room was. She was shown to her specific locker by the team’s head coach and helped her get calm. She was then introduced to the rest of her team, where she was greeted in not only English but also Inuit as well. This pleased Mumei easily, and she explained her origins story and the entire locker room was quite astonished about her strange origins. The group then decided to have the rookies compete in a skills competition in which everyone was shocked that someone like Mumei could play every on-ice position besides goalie. The next thing the group decides to do is to go to the bar and see how cheap the rookies are, in which Mumei was able to pay everyone’s tab while the rest of the rookies could seemingly only pay for themselves. Mumei will be a great fit in Great Falls.

Ima Noobie walked into the Newfoundland locker room and immediately felt like Forrest Gump trying to find a seat on a bus.

"It's taken." "This locker's taken." "No, you can't use that locker. It's taken."

Finally, Noobie was able to find a locker away from the vets and next to fellow rookie Jacob Marsh. As the two rookies started getting their gear placed in their locker, Noobie was suddenly doused by a white, creamy, icky, nasty substance. From head to toe. He was covered!

In mayonnaise!

As he turned around to face his attacker, Ima Noobie slipped and fell to the floor of the locker room. The rookie was then drug to the center of the room as more of the veterans ran circles around him, dumping gobs of mayo all over him.

They completed the rookie hazing by chanting "Berserkers! Berserkers! Berserkers!"

Noobie just sat in silence in the middle of the locker room floor with mayo dripping down his face.

As Slava stepped into the Nevada locker room, he couldn’t help but feel shocked. From the weather to the extreme welcoming nature from his teammates and fellow draftees, it was not something he was used to. Utilizing his steadily increasing English speaking abilities, he tried to inquire from his longer tenured teammates if there was a local spot that made quality pelmini…. Needless to say there is nowhere.

He spent majority of his first day on the rink. Experiencing the size of the ice and the smaller playing area was something that was going to take time. Knowing his drive to improve and desire to prove himself he skated hours and hours. From the width of the ice, practicing forechecking and backchecking against his teammates, he began to envision just how truly bright his future in NBB was shaped up to be.

He left the ice drenched in sweat, ankles pulsating from the work he had just put in and spoke out loud to his fellow rookies.

“How Americans do this heat?!”

Kiwi was given a tour of the DODGE RAM HELLCAT 1500 ARENA and facilities personally with the other rookies by the new GM of the Nevada Battleborn. She didn't quiet catch his names but the GM looks suspiciously close to former president John F Kennedy who she could have sworn died like 100 years ago, but then how is he here giving her a tour. Anyway, the tour was great. DODGE RAM HELLCAT 1500 ARENA is a cutting edge arena and includes a casino deck basically over the hockey rink.

Now the facilities for the players obviously are funded by degenerate gambling dollars. The team has access to high altitude cardio chambers, cryo rooms for recovering and zero-G gravity beds because why not. There's a list of Nevada Battleborn who have gone on to win a Challenge Cup in the SHL and Kiwi's uncle Conner is on it twice. After the tour, she really felt an immense sense of pride for the chance to play in Nevada.

Barcus walks into the Armada dressing for the first time, a bit nervously. It's always disconcerting joining a new team. A minefield of interpersonal relationships and conflicts waits for an unsuspecting freshman to stumble through. Who knows what might trigger a bad first impression in the wrong person? But Barcus knows that there are also buried treasures waiting in that room: new friends, new connections, brothers and sisters who will fight together for years to come. A new family.

The welcome is warm. The current players laugh and joke with each other, and try to draw the rookies into the jokes, knowing that they're all clueless anyway.  For some reason Gabriel Johnson is there. Barcus chats with his fellow rookies.  He has played with and against many of the elite young Canadian hockey players in the past few seasons, but he knows none of these players, most of whom are European.

In a quiet moment between chats, Barcus looks around the room and feels a sudden surge of excitement and anticipation. This is going to be fantastic. Go boats!

Grindle Waters-Johnson was a very popular member of the Great Falls Grizzlies locker room as soon as he stepped foot in there, everyone loves this guy. He received one of the warmest welcomes anybody has ever received, it was crazy. The team's captain, Thomas Hudson, personally welcomed Grindle and showed him around the arena.

The atmosphere in the locker room was electric, and they even had a custom welcome draftees table with snacks and drinks. Everybody was mingling and getting to know each other. Coach Gibbles said some inspiring words to us, words that changed Grindle's life, honestly. After the speech, Hudson handed every rookie a new jersey, I got my favorite number because I'm just that cool.

Grindle felt like he was at home, with incredible camaraderie and support building in the locker room. The Grizzlies are not just a team, but a family, and Grindle is ecstatic to get started with this great, historic roster.

“HOLLY S**T” is all Chuck could think as he walked into the Carolina Kraken locker room. Looking around, his first impression was at the insane amount of orange. Chuck was still getting used to it being his new favorite color. As he continued to look around, Scout Jove and GM sve7en walked up and shook Chucks hand. “Welcome to the LR” GM sve7en said while turning and opening up to the room. As GM sve7en made an announcement about Chuck to the team, teammates took turns walking up, congratulating and shaking hands with Chuck. Everyone was friendly, although the small-talk was short. Chuck was shown his way to his locker which was located beside Max Belcher. Chuck sat down and took it all in. He couldn’t believe it. What a day! Going 18th overall was a surprise and seeing how nice and supportive everyone in the locker room was a cherry on top. Slowly, nerves started to creep in as Chuck realized that he was about to go onto the ice for his first SMJHL practice. He knew he could keep up but didn’t want to make any mistakes in front of everyone. Max helped ease the nerves by keeping a conversation going about non-hockey related items.

The drive to Maine was not so surprising. The climate in Maine compared to Lucas' home in Mankato is similar of course. What was surprising was how incredibly nice and caring the people of the Pine Tree State were. The people in the area were great and excited to meet the new Timber defenseman, but just walking into the locker room Lucas noticed how wonderful the community really was. The trees gathered around and took time meeting all the new rookies and letting them introduce themselves. Each player was given their own new jersey and the rookies suited up in their gear to head out on the ice for the first practice. It was a truly a great day in Portland, and everyone was excited for what was to come.

TEDDY BLOOS made the flight to Thunder Bay literally the night after being drafted thirty second (32nd) overall by the brand new fish team of the SMJHL, the Thunder Bay Walleye. His first reaction to the new digs was that it really was quite a small town, but that seemed to be par for the course of all of the SMJHL cities.

Upon arriving, Bloos was greeted by fellow players including Jon Garfield and Thomas Harley. He also did not arrive alone, for joining him were the other Walleye draftees, including Chaos Giraffe, Puddles O'Duckling, and Tip Toasty. At the rookie camp, the team's general managers and coaches emphasized their key role in shaping the next generation, or rather first generation, of Walleye hockey. Indeed, there was much pressure to be had, but given this year will be a bit of a down-swing season for the Walleye, it really is about getting the rookies, including Teddy Bloos, acclimated to life in the J.

Darby Reznor used to be told by his mom that when entering a new place of work, whether it be a job or the locker room of his new SMJHL team, he should always be respectful and offer handshakes. With that being said, Darby certainly was not expecting the Maine Timber to welcome him into the locker room with some chocolate chip cookies, but he was not going to say no. As he ate, he shook the hands of his new teammates who had all heard of him and his skateboarding antics. He was also told about a skatepark nearby, which he decided to pay so that he and a few of his teammates could hang out there.

After doing a few tricks in the street course for his Instagram, Darby filmed a few teammates trying to do some skateboarding tricks. It was there that they all found out that being good at ice skating does not guarantee you will be good at skateboarding, and Darby decided to edit the video into a bail montage.
