Deep Dive #2: The President's Trophy Curse
#1

So winning the President's Trophy is pretty cool in theory right? It basically means that you are the best team in the regular season since you have the most points during the season. However, take note that I said "during the regular season", because as it turns out at least according to my research, the last time a Presidents Trophy winner went on to win the cup was all the way back in season 68. Since then however, no team has been able to win both in a single season, and as a player who was on one of those teams in the Baltimore Platoon, I know how devastating it can be.

We we're doing so well and made it all the way to the Finals before running into the brick wall known as the San Francisco Pride and losing 4-1 in the series. Last season, the Philadelphia Forge won the Trophy with a 51-10-5 record and 107 pointa, just beating out the San Francisco Pride who had an even 100 points. But what happened in the playoffs? Well, they made it to the Conference Finals until the team that finished 9th in the league known as the New England Wolfpack beat them 4-1 in the series. The Wolfpack would go on have a 3-1 comeback in the Finals to win the cup.

In Season 75, the Edmonton Blizzard would end up winning the Trophy with a 49-16-1 record and 99 points, just one point away from triple digits. They beat out the Los Angeles Panthers by 5 points, and had a .750 point percentage in a slightly weak year for league standings. In the playoffs though, Edmonton would end up losing 4-1 in the finals to the New England Wolfpack, who would be swept in the Finals themselves. Edmonton would also win the Trophy in the season before that with a 52-13-1 record and 105 points, beating out the Buffalo Stampede by 9 points.

However in that season, Edmonton would once again lose in the second round, this time 4-2 to the San Francisco Pride. The Pride would lose in the Conference Finals 4-1 to the Winnipeg Aurora by the way. New England would get a turn with the Trophy in season 73, with a 53-11-2 record and 108 points, beating out the Philadelphia Forge who had 102 points. That Forge team would get revenge however by beating New England 4-2 in the Conference Finals, before losing a tough 7 game series to the Edmonton Blizzard. It is nice to see that Edmonton got at least one cup semi recently by the way.

So what is the point that I am trying to make? Well for one, the President's trophy might be cursed right now. Like I said, Season 68 was the last time a Trophy winner won the cup as well, and I'm not sure if that has any connection to a sim engine switch or not, I'm not sure when we switched to the version of FHM we currently use. Bad luck is definitely part of it, as these teams definitely had their sim luck run out on the playoffs at some point. Maybe they used it all during the regular season? I don't know, all I know is that I'd rather be middle of the pack in the regular season standings with a cup than be a Presidents Trophy winner without one.
