For my first ever “Deep dive” I’ve decided to stay close to home. Analyzing the Quebec City Citadelles 78th season. With Part 1 being a closer look at the Quebec City Citadelles newest members.
The Rooks
With the 12th, 25th, 41st, 57th and 73rd picks in the draft Quebec picked Dejana Kaptina, Duke Howard, QCCBOT4, Ela Solberg and Jouni Paarma.
Dejana Kaptina Selected 12th overall, the 5’ 10” 185lb Center(wo)man impressed the QCC brass and cemented herself as a can’t miss 1st round pick. The Lausanne, Switzerland native centered the 3rd line in QCC and put up 18 goals and 29 assists for 47 points. Posting a 53.8% faceoff win rate was good for 2nd on the team. Kaptina proved to be a solid choice and should be a core piece of the lineup in the years to come. Duke Howard Taken with the 25th pick, the 6’ 4” 227lb winger is an imposing figure, but a teddy bear at heart, off the ice at least . . . Once the puck drops, all that stops. To go along with 17 goals and 31 assists, Howard’s 148 hits ranked 4th on the team. With the team focusing on “outscoring their problems” this year, Duke spent all his free time honing his offensive skills. When asked if he could be helping more defensively, he said “I wouldn’t want the defense doing my job . . . Maybe he’ll round out his game this offseason. QCCBOT4 “Birthed” in the QCC stronghold’s basement laboratory in Helvete, Norway, and chosen with the 41st pick. QCCBOT4 only has one prime directive, stop puck. Appearing in 32 games between the pipes, QCCBOT4 had an up and down season with 11 wins and 15 losses, stopping 836 of 941 shots for a GAA of 3.81 and a Save percentage of .888 and logging one shutout. Though a system update may be in order for QCC this offseason, the team hopes to hear plenty more of their hilarious and slightly unnerving “extinction of the human race” jokes . . .
"We've had 1st rookie tendy yes . . . but what about 2nd rookie tendy??"Ela Solberg Plucked from the pack with the 57th pick, Ela Solberg rounds out the all rookie goalie tandem. Coming all the way from Fredrikstad, Norway, Ela quickly found herself right at home in Quebec city with the Citadelles. Starting 42 games, going 18-19-2 with a 3.52 GAA and .899 SV%. At face value, maybe a bit underwhelming. But taking into account the “See you later” defense that the Citadelles employed paints a clearer picture. Ela’s efforts were recognized at the mid season point, making an appearance on the Esa Anrikkanen watch list for rookie of the year.
Rounding out the selections for Quebec City, with the 73rd pick, from Kuopio, Finland, Paarma struggled to find playing time. Appearing in just 17 games tallying 8 assists. Hopefully a reset after the season can help to revitalize the Finns game and start strong next year! Jouni Paarma Building off of this rookie class and a decent shot at some high overall picks in the S79 draft, Quebec looks to gain momentum and make another run at the Four Star cup!
