Offense: Tip Toasty started the season relatively strong, staying in the top three players for goals, assists, and points for much of the early season. Toasty put up 46 points, 16 goals, and 30 assists throughout the 66 game regular season, with many of the goals coming early on. Over the third-quarter of Season 78, Toasty fell into a slump and struggled with role changes and line instability. Toward the end of the season, thanks to player growth in areas like the ability to get open and passing, as well as physical improvements in strength and agility, Toasty regained some of the early momentum. In the playoffs, Toasty had 7 points in 9 games.

Toasty showed growth in puck handling nearing the end of the season, and continues to look to improve this stat in coming seasons. His offensive awareness is already showing a lot of promise, and he continues to work on this aspect of his game, showing a desire to make the right decision, whether it is shoot or pass, in every situation. Toasty admitted he may have focused a bit too much early in the season on shooting accuracy and range. He spoke about over-practicing shooting drills and lacking the necessary time to develop the more physical attributes of the game. As Toasty and linemates gain more line chemistry, they are sure to increase scoring as well. Fellow rookie Puddles O’Duckling played the opposite wing as Toasty at times during the season and anchored the first line alongside Toasty and center Teddy Bloos for the Walleye in the playoffs. This trio showed flashes of success in the first round, and all three have been mentioned as potential first round picks in the upcoming draft, with O’Duckling often mocked in the top 20, while Toasty and Bloos are often projected as being on the cusp of the first round or early second round.

Toasty has room to improve passing and puck handling, but has showed promise. He ended the regular season with an acceptable 43 giveaways. With improvements to puck handling and passing, Toasty has stated a desire to be more secure with the puck.

Overall, goal scoring is the winger’s main priority going forward. Finding line mates for assists is an emphasis, but putting the puck in the net is what Toasty wants to do most. This is especially true in terms of taking advantage of opportunities while on the power play lines. Some of this progress will come from an increased focus on strength, agility, and other physical assets. While Toasty ranks well among teammates, he hopes to soon rank well among the entire league in scoring.

Defense: When Toasty entered the league, he made significant claims about his understanding of the importance of defense for a forward, even citing his hero Sergei Fedorov and his ability to play the forecheck, backcheck, and even lay down a few hits. When you look at his numbers in relation of the team’s overall performance it puts some of the possible doubts for his defensive abilities in context, but it is hard to swallow a season long -31 plus/minus rating. The team as a whole had a negative goal differential to the tune of -86.

While the team stats may bring some question to Toasty’s current defensive skillset, individual stats begin to paint a different picture. Toasty laid out nearly 160 hits over the season, and greatly focused on separating the puck from the puck carrier. In fact, Toasty had 55 takeaways over the 66 game regular season, leading all forwards on the team. He averaged nearly 1 takeaway per-game over the 9 games Thunder Bay played in the playoffs, ending with a 2:1 takeaway to giveaway ratio.

During the offseason, Toasty has committed to focusing on positioning; clogging the passing lanes and blocking shots. Toasty loves to throw the body around, and will only get better on defense with physical attribute training.

Physical: As the season progressed, Toasty showed a need to progress physically. While focusing on individual offensive or defensive skills, Toasty’s training lacked improvement for his ability to capitalize on those skills. Toward the end of the season, Toasty began working on strength training and agility. Moving into the SHL, Toasty will really push these attributes before focusing on speed and acceleration to spur more offense.

An already positive GA/TA will only improve with more training in strength, agility, and balance. Toasty hopes to use physical progress as a means for leaps forward on offense and defense.

Future Outlook: Toasty has shown that he can be a near-max earner in the league. He has the potential to grow significantly going into his next season, and be ready for the call up to the SHL before his fourth season in the junior leagues. He was hired for two jobs and has contributed media in his first season. Toasty has expressed an interest in developing a podcast to help earn enough money to max out his weekly training. With significant income, consistent activity with TPE opportunities, and a growing understanding of the league, Toasty is a first-gen player to watch out for in this week’s draft. With the stated goal to become a contributor on both ends of the ice, Toasty could easily sneak into the late first round or early second round if a team is willing to take a chance on a first generation player creation.
