S79 PT #2: Person's Best Friend Due: Sunday, October 27th @ 11:59 PM PST

Obviously coaches are the most important part of a player's arsenal when it comes to growth and performance, but there are a couple of others that play a large part as well. Mental health specialists keep players leveled and down to earth when trudging through each season. Whether it's time away from the family or simply poor performance, social workers travel with the team and always lend an ear and perspective that helps keep players at peak performance. Something not though about often are also the travel specialists; those planning the road games (hotels, meals, etc.) but also those actually driving the busses and flying the airplanes. They also travel with the squad, so it's not easy on them either having to dedicate that much time and effort away from their families. Lastly the equipment managers always do an amazing job of maintaining our stuff on the road; the sheer amount of work they put in is worth mentioning.

LARGEST PUNISHMENT IN SHL HISTORY

The most important person on the Winnipeg Aurora staff for Johnny FourStar is the strength and conditioning coach. Johnny FourStar is not as limber as he once was. Old age has started to set in and father time waits for no one. So Johnny does his best to stay in top physical shape. He follows the plan his strength and conditioning coach sets out for him exactly. He does every exercise, every set, and every stretch. Johnny has a lot of trust in his coach to make sure his body is never the reason why he loses games. This trust was developed over the course of many seasons with the Winnipeg Aurora. In fact, it's a big reason why Johnny has stayed with the team so long. This positive working relationship with his coaches in the workout facility has helped Johnny's play tremendously and is keeping him active and ready to play in the SHL.

Sad Ketchup of the Chicago Syndicate is a popular player on the Chicago Syndicate of the Simulation Hockey League, but he does have some people that are not in hockey operations within the organization that are important to him and would be friends with Sad Ketchup. One of those people to no ones surprise, would be the teams chef who cooks all of the teams meals. The chef and Sad Ketchup have built a close friendship and the chef knows what Sad Ketchup likes, and knows how to make it good, and also made variations that Sad Ketchup will eat. The two spend a lot of time together in the kitchen and connected over the love of food, although Sad Ketchups food is quite different from the chefs, but the chef has had Sad Ketchup trying some new things slowly, and branching out. That is why he is an important person to Sad Ketchup as the two have grown close, and continue to grow closer.

Prompt 1

Johnny Hamilton, former player agent and now SHL general manager, has been called a genius for many things. This next story is not one of those times.

After seeing some other teams announce a team pet, Johnny thought, “that sounds like fun, I’m sure there will be no setbacks!” and went out to make it happen for the Baltimore Platoon. He called up his buddy who knew a guy whose cousin runs a raptor rescue league, and was able to purchase a young “eaglet” that they could not release back into nature. Thus the age of Talon began. Talon, rather than being a little baby eaglet, was actually a nearly fully grown eagle with clipped wings so he couldn’t fly off into the stands. This is not a cute cuddly friend for the players; no one was taking Talon home. In fact, Johnny had to hire two different full time bird handlers to manage Talon’s care and well being. This got expensive, especially because Talon did NOT like live games. Too many people, too many noises, very stressed bird. The bird was very quickly banished from the dressing room (Inge Baardsen specifically is TERRIFIED of birds), and became less team pet and more uncomfy mascot. Do you know why professional sports teams don’t have live animal mascots? Because it’s inhumane and shitty to do. Don’t do this.

All the while, M’Baku Olubori watched and laughed at home, snuggled by his own pets: the cat Egusi and his blue staffy, Aja. He could tell this wouldn't go well, but it's not his job to critique things that aren't his business.

The moral of the story: this is why you ask your players before you do things like this. Talon lasted 13 games before being retired and returned to the raptor sanctuary. They reframed the situation as a large donation to the rescue versus the VERY illegal purchasing of an eagle.

Also, if I may be allowed an editorial moment (this isn’t part of the PT): I’m sad this prompt wasn’t giving us space to talk about our players’ pets. I would have had a blast talking about the lore of Baku’s dog and cat, but instead I had to go in a different direction. I could have given you 300-400 words about Baku’s pets, and had a blast. And I would absolutely do it if given a chance. @puolivalmiste

In his many travels across the world, Journey Man has picked up a lot of different methods and styles for staying fit and healthy, but none more so than yoga. So having a professional yoga instructor on staff has been one of the best parts of being in the SHL for Man. Physically, yoga helps Journey stay flexible, loose, and well conditioned. In such a fast paced and hard hitting sport, you can't overlook the importance of durability and recovery, and yoga helps with both. But yoga also helps Journey stay in shape mentally. The mental wear of constant traveling and high emotion game play can take its toll, so being able to ground himself, and find inner peace is huge. Staying neutral, as in not getting too far down in the dumps, or likewise not getting too cocky and riding the highs, is vital in the SHL, as being too emotional either way can be that slighest of X-factors that can decide a game.

The most important non-coaching staff person to Clarence is without a doubt the chef. He took money out of his own contract to make sure that the team has the best meals before and after games. Everything is monitored and measured appropriately. While it hasn't really reflected in the results, yet, he's still holding out hope that if the team buys in to eating a little better they might feel better, and if they feel better maybe they'll play better. It's hard though. Sometimes after a game you just wanna have a few drinks and eat whatever bad food you can get your hands on. It's been an uphill battle. Honorable mention to the person in charge of audio for the arena. Playing the right music before, during, and after the game is important to the team and fans alike. They've been on point this season helping the team stay in the zone when they need to be.

So the GM of the Yukon Malamutes wants to adopt a team mascot / pet, very cool, very demure, very exciting. It's so painfully obvious just from the team name what we'd want as the pet. A gorilla. we'll get him a nice jersey to wear and he'll come with us to all the road games, and I'll feed him every day. What would a pet gorilla eat exactly? well, the crate of hotdogs the team already keeps on hand for Djoe Anderson is probably what his diet will consist of. that and leftovers from the arena, but he'll have to fight Djoe for those as well. All said and done, Djoe might be one of the few people that might be able to keep the gorilla calm. also we'll get him glow in the dark shoes and we'll call him a glorilla. and he'll come to every away game with us and just secretly lace up the skates, better watch out for the glori- I mean chuck lumbermouth. (He looks bigger than usual, doesn't he? ..)

T-Bird the peregrine falcon quickly became a controversial figure in Detroit. From a marketing perspective the idea was sound: peregrine falcons have been the focus of wildlife protection and restoration efforts across the state of Michigan for a long time, so the team giving one a home was sure to be popular. Couple that with a name referencing an iconic car produced by the motor city's most iconic automotive manufacturer, and it sure seemed like an easy PR move. The fiasco began not long after the season started. During the second intermission of the October 13th game against Kelowna, T-Bird's attendant allowed him to fly over the ice as part of the entertainment... only for T-Bird to do what birds do right at the center ice logo. The third period was delayed as the crew cleaned up T-Bird's mess, and Kelowna would go on to score two unanswered goals and take the road win over the Falcons. T-Bird hasn't been allowed outside of a birdcage at home games anymore.

Option 2
The people I appreciate the most off the bench are the cleaners. I hate to see a dirty room and the way our schedule is jam packed as players these days the cleaners really save me. There’s nothing better than headed home from practice or going to a clean hotel room after the game it’s just relaxing knowing it’s not dirty. I also gotta give my dog walker props. The dogs I have are very hard to walk I adopted them late and they are buggers to train. Our dog walker manages to take 3 of our dobbermans out on a walk the same time! Of course our cook also needs some props. They cook a delicious meal for us every chance they get and it’s always a five star feed. Every staff member is important in an SHL players life they help keep us in line and make us the best version of who we are as players!

Prompt 2

The coaching and other support staff at the Minnesota Monarchs franchise is absolutely fantastic. From personal trainers, to tactics coach, from the team chef to the janitor and from the busdriver to the equipement manager, they all play their part in making the lives of us hockey players as easy and organized as possible. From the moment Julian signed his first Monarchs contract, so much of his daily life is being plannen and handleiding for him, and everyone puts so much effort into him being able to be in the best possible position to show his talent and shine in the big games.

So far Jules, it's near impossible to pick a personal favourite among all of these amazing people. But if he has to put someone in the spotlight, It would be the guy who sharpens his skates before every game. From the moment he saw Julian skating, he never had to ask how he wanted his blades done. He just knew how to make them perfect for Jules' style.

Written option 2

The holistic look at athletes success means more specialists working with players off the ice. For Tip Toasty, the most important non coaching staff help keep him prepared for games and progressing toward the call up to the SHL. Nutrition is incredibly important, especially to a player like tip Toasty who does not eat meat. This specialist means proper recovery, growth in strength, and mental sharpness. Toasty also appreciates any staff who helps keep a positive mental attitude. PMA specialists are helpful to keeping the team at their best, and avoiding making mistakes due to distractions and poor reactions. Having the right balance of drive, competitiveness, and focus, and avoiding the pitfalls of negative self talk, overreactions and lack of emotional control, and apathy means our players have a better holistic look at the game. Combined with physical and strategic practice, players are sure to see more personal and team success with these specialists on the staff.

Written Option 1:

There are two options for the team pet for Manhattan Rage. The first one is the odd one out. A worm. Yeah, a worm, nothing more. Is that funny? Yes. Is there a lot to write about this except the thousands of jokes about if our fans would still root for us if we were worms? No. That is why we will proceed from here with option two, a bull.

Now a bull is a classic Rage icon and has been featured on our two latest logos and also a raging bull fits the stereotype of what we would want in our team perfectly. I am 100% sure that our coach and management staff would love for us to have a bull inside the locker room and especially on the bench! To raise team morale we take turns to care for the bull, letting him into our homes and rotating one week each. The name? Who knows. I think we probably cannot agree on one so it's a new each week.

Big Sweg is a freak of nature. A freak of nation that has his needs, and therefore he needs his own special staff that follows him around, catering to his every need. Of course the most important staff for him is the "head of nutritinous resources of a varied kind". Also known as... ALL YOU CAN EAT BUFFET CHEF. Yes you know it, all you can eat buffet is and will keep on being the most important thing in Big Swegs life. All you can eat buffet is love, all you can eat buffet is life. Big Swegs relationship with the chef is very special, she was chosen as a meme but it has turned into a blossoming love and not only a friendship. She cares strongly for him and he for her, which is a recipe(haha) for success! All you can eat buffet girl is a legend and Big Sweg wouldn't be half the man(physically) without her.
