Well, the team has decided to take a road trip by bus to go and watch the SHL finals but it's going to be a long trip! Hamilton to San Francisco is a long trip! We will probably miss a couple of games due to the distance and with Lahey leading this trip we will most definitely get lost and end up in Mexico somehow. But the better idea would be to drive to the games in Philly instead, that's a lot closer, but still, with Lahey driving the bus we are destined to get lost, but that would make for some great stories in the future, definitely would not be funny in the moment

Looks like [TEAM] won Season 79 Challenge Cup! So who won and why? What could the other team have done differently to change the result? What was your favorite part of the series?

The San Francisco Pride won the Challenge Cup, and they definitely did so thanks to a harsh wake up call and an absolute lock in from Justin Time. Time gave up 8 goals in game 1, but after that gave up just 4 goals total in the next 4 games, including only 1 goal over games 2-4. That lock in completely turned the series around for the Pride. I think maybe Philly wasted all their goals in game 1, and they probably felt a little too confident after a game 1 stomping. They needed a closer game 1 to remind themselves not to take it too easy in this series. It's hard to say much else could have gone differently other than that. It was the huge spark for SFP in the next game and it was the only turning point in the series. I think 14-0 is an absolutely insane score in a finals but it's quite iconic so it's hard to call anything else a favourite moment.

2. Gnabe Dabson leads in both goals and points while Tony Soprano is second for both. Is that enough to give offensive advantage to Philadelphia?
3. Cale Salad is currently 6 points ahead of next defencemen in points for these playoffs, if they keep it up could we see defenceman winning Anton Razov?
4. High end offensive talent is cool and all but Justin Time is ahead of BASE PACK on save%, goals against average and goals saved above average. Can Philadelphia solve them or is it Time for another Challenge Cup in San Francisco?
5. San Francisco has more goals scored per games played than Philadelphia, mostly because of their depth scoring. Which players that aren’t part of first powerplay unit do you expect to have high impact in this series?
6. Which team to miss out from the Finals was best in your opinion? Why them?
2. Having two players is not enough for a team to be given the advantage. You need an entire team to make it happen. If you goalie gets hot the offensive advantage means nothing anyway. So I would say that given San Francisco's depth, no Philly does not have the offensive advantage.

3. We definitely could see that. I think most people vote essentially based off of points and nothing else. If he takes and keeps the points lead then I believe the voting committee will vote him in and he will win the Razov trophy. That said the only thing that matters is the cup so we'll see if he can carry his team to that.

Your team has scheduled a road trip to go see games 1 and 2 of the SHL finals between San Francisco and Philadelphia (or to four-star cup finals between those games if your player plays for either team). You’re in charge of officially setting up the trip. The only rule? You gotta go by bus! Where do you stop along the way? Which of your teammates are you most excited to go on a trip with? Do you end up missing game 1 and 2 because of the many stops between your team’s home city to San Francisco that you’ve planned? Does the bus end up breaking down at any point? How does the trip go? If you’re on a team playing in the finals, plan a trip to the first away games instead (by bus ofcourse, for teambuilding and fun).

The Tampa Bay Barracuda are gassing up the bus and heading to the Bay area to watch games 1 and 2 of the Challenge Cup finals! Why? TPE that’s why! This is actually an interesting road trip since we are crossing the whole ass state of Texas, lots of desert, near some national parks, but slim pickings overall. Google maps says its 41 hours of driving. Day 1 – 14 hours from Tampa to Houston. Elected for this route since the rest of the trip will be pretty dry. The cuda can go for a dip in the Gulf anywhere from the panhandle, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, or just wait until Houston. Day 2 – 16.5 hour drive from Houston to Phoenix. Honestly now that Im planning this trip Im glad Im not on it. Why are we doing this again? Day 3 – the final grueling leg of the trip is a 12 hour drive from Phoenix to San Fran. Im gonna say the group does not make it to SF or the hockey games. Probably head straight to Vegas from Houston.

The Pride come out on top in just 5 games over Philly to bring their second cup in just 4 short seasons to the Bay area. You could probably just look at regular season standings and say this wasn’t a surprise at all, but I personally thought things were wide open this year. The West was extremely competitive at the top of the conference with Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Texas in the top tier. I would not have been shocked at those teams making it out of the West, despite solid seasons from NOLA and Minnesota.
The Eastern Conference on the other hand had teams scrounging up points wherever they could find them. Baltimore was the clear bully of the conference, whereas only 10 points separated the 4th seed from the 9th seed who missed the playoffs entirely!
Both teams put themselves in great positions to win the cup. Ultimately I may ask myself if I was a member of the Platoon what happened after Game 2? The defense was strong, and the offense was there the rest of the way. What did we do differently or stop doing that let the Pride put up 18 goals in those last three games?

9. Personally I like staying in contention for as long as possible because rebuilds suck. I've been in them in other leagues and while I've enjoyed the success later on, waiting that long is not pleasant at all. I'm definitely a person who tries to compete as much as possible each year but also is willing to shed old contracts when the team is not competing in order to retool for the future. I think it's definitely possible to do such a thing in the SHL by managing contracts properly and keeping in mind when players start to develop and break down to make sure that you have as many peak contracts and players as possible. - 115 words - 2 TPE

Write your predictions for this year's IIHF tournament or WJC! Tell me about your team! What are your expectations for your player? What teams are you watching out for this time around? Did last season's results surprise you and how much do you expect them to change this time?

The IIHF World Championship this season look to be a contest between three powerhouse teams looking for gold and glory. First, Switzerland, an offensive juggernaut, will look to make the most out of one of its strongest rosters to date, with Ace Lightning, Levin Shattenaxt, and Antonio Flusso looking to rally behind goaltender Tibuk Soonika. The team also has strong veteran leadership in Ivan Lacksamus, Meta Knight, and Spack Jarrow, and that’s without mentioning the Hunziker brothers in the lineup. Fresh off their first appearance, Team Quebec will look to step into its own with a strong squad in its own right. With QCCBOT4 as its goaltender for the tournament, Ekaterina Valieva running the offense, and contributors like Ricky Koivu, Jay Bryzi, Bobby Tkachuky, and Bellamy Blake will likely be the strongest two-way threat. Finally, Latvia will benefit from perhaps its best squad in years, with Benjamin Surkhi-Ze'ev, Jarrod Lakemore, Matiss Ozolinsh, Edzus Ozolins, and Billy Holl will shore up a suffocating offense and defense rivaling some SHL squads, which should make life very easy for goaltender Wayne Holloway. Though dark horses like Canada and Germany should not be counted out, these three teams will be the focus and the show of the tournament this season. (200 Words, +4 TPE)

How about those Pride? I’ve always been very high on the Forge for their two-way skill, but it’s unfair for me to simply overlook that the Pride this season have just been the better well-rounded machine, be it in the regular season with their 100-point campaign, or the rock-solid playoff run where only the heroic Calgary Dragons gave them trouble. 9. I think a good way to achieve success in the SHL is to try to have consistency and be a team that always makes the playoffs. As long as you make the playoffs, then anything can happen. You could be a lower seed, but end up knocking off higher seeds if your team is playing well at the end of the season and building that momentum. Being a part of New England it’s been fun being in the playoffs every year and having a shot at winning a cup each season. (91 words) +1 TPE

14. The season 79 Challenge Cup was won by the San Francisco Pride. San Francisco was able to win the challenge cup on the backs of their top point scorers, including Logan Webb, Dominik Winters and Oskar Scholz who all finished the regular season top 10 in points with both Logan and Dominic having over 100 points. During the playoffs these three players had 17, 15 and 14 goals finishing top-five in goals scored during the playoffs. They also were able to get some good goaltending throughout the playoffs with Justin time having a goals against average of 2.76 which was second for playoffs and eight goals saved above average of 15.19. Justin also had a .911 save percentage. Having all of these stats throughout, the playoffs resulted in him being a top goalie, and also having four shutouts in the entire playoffs, which was two better than the second goalie. The big area that Philadelphia lacked during the final series was having points from multiple players on the team. All of their points came from three players who ended in the top 10 in points whereas San Francisco had seven of the top 10 players in points for the playoffs. If Philadelphia could have a couple more players get some more points than I could have improved their chances of winning the car. (225 Words) +4 TPE

13. Written, 50 to 200+ words. Five Nation Tournament
The only international tournaments in SHL are WJC and IIHF but in real life we have had Olympics, World Cups and now the 4 Nation tournament. What kind of tournaments besides of IIHF and WJC you’d like to see in SHL? How they would be different from the current tournaments? How often they would be played and would they be played instead of current tournaments or would both be held at the same time? Or would you think it would be instead better to restructure current tournaments?
I think the current IIHF and WJC setups have enough problems without trying to add additional variables of tertiary tournaments. And where would we insert them into the existing schedule? Would we need another committee to handle them? I don't think it's realistic with the state that the existing tournaments are in that we could add another one of any variety, even if there's interest in doing so. And that's unfortunate, but it's the reality of it. We aren't in a position to add further tournaments, and it doesn't seem that that's a particularly popular thing to do anyway, given conversations that have happened in other SHL spheres in relatively recent history.

That's not to say I don't think additional tournaments could work or be interesting at All, but there's definitely a lot of work to be done before anything like a Four Nations tournament or Olympic tournament could be implemented. Even if it were just to replace IIHF somewhere in the cycle. And what would the counterparts be for Juniors players? IIHF lends easily to WJC, but Olympics doesn't have an easy counterpart the same way. Four Nations I guess you could run a juniors version, but then that's basically IIHF/WJC.

2. Gnabe Dabson leads in both goals and points while Tony Soprano is second for both. Is that enough to give offensive advantage to Philadelphia? - 160 words - 3 TPE

Honestly in the playoffs, anything can happen. While two players can dominate in points, it can be indicative of an easier path to this point or just more games played. I haven't looked into how it worked out for them up to that point, and I'm sure the playoffs are done now too. But I've seen players dominate point totals from just playing more games, or by feasting on a weaker conference or division. While playoffs can a beast for any team involved, sometimes a dynamic duo can do really well against that sort of competition. However, they still need to deal with another finalist team that is clearly playing well enough to get to that same point. It's never a guarantee, and they'll have a tough path to take. Facing another top team could result in a shutdown in production either through stout defense, tougher forward matchups, or just a goalie hitting a hot streak at the perfect timing.

3. Cale Salad is currently 6 points ahead of next defencemen in points for these playoffs, if they keep it up could we see defenceman winning Anton Razov? - 103 words - 2 TPE

Well, I think defensemen playing better than other defensemen doesn't necessarily indicate Anton Razov winning performance. Obviously you'll have to compare to the goalie performances and the dynamic Philly duo has had their success as well. Honestly, not even sure exactly what the Razov entails, I'm just assuming it to be playoff MVP. It could also just be some defenseman specific award, but I'll go with the MVP. Tony Soprano and Gnabe Dabson dominate points so surely they'd be favorites off the bat if Philly wins the playoffs. While I'm always a proponent for recognizing defensemen performances, I don't think that statistic alone would seal the deal.

2.  It did not prove to be enough to give Philadelphia an offensive edge.  After blowing out San Francisco 8 to 2 in the opening game of the series, the offense totally dried up.  They were outscored 29 to 4 in games 2 through 5, including two shutouts.  Tony Soprano scored 3 of those goals and Gnabe Dabson had an assist on the fourth.  There was only a single goal in the series which didn't include Tony or Gnabe and that was the first goal in the first game.  Instead of giving them an edge, I think you could read it as a liability.  They went cold and the team wasn't ready to fill in the gap.

During their 20 seasons in league Philadelphia has never missed the playoffs. Which is impressive but still there are other teams with longer playoffs streaks, while other teams clean the house others try to stay afloat and do a retool while still staying in playoffs, both with varying successes. Out of last 5 Challenge Cup winners both Los Angeles and San Francisco missed playoffs about 6 seasons before they won their cup while New England has been in playoffs since S67. What in your opinion is best way to achieve success in SHL? Is it better to have high but shorter peak or should teams try to aim staying close to top but likely never reaching it for longer, potentially almost indefinitely? Can they somehow do both?

I think it's worthwhile to try staying in the playoffs indefinitely given the potential for upsets and runs.  Hell, even Manhattan, the lowest seed in the playoffs, almost took out the top seed in the East who eventually went on to the finals.  It's easier to have fun when the team can bond over exciting moments like that in the playoffs.  When everyone is already participating, you'll get that momentum of others wanting to make sure their players are ready to contribute.

If you are going to blow up the team to try and come back stronger, you have to have a dedicated core ready to build up.  They have to be willing to pump time and effort into their player without seeing any results for a while.  You could have a group of league veterans who are already friends and know what they are getting into, but league veterans might also care about maximizing the success on the limited life time of their player's career.

I think its a lot easier to blow things up and build a team from scratch to compete in a window. Obviously if everyone does this only a couple will win but at least you are kind of giving yourself a chance out there. Some teams keep trying to retool and retool and never end up in a spot where they could reasonably win it all. But the elite class of teams can keep retooling and still remain actual contenders for extended periods of time. This is pretty rare though, but teams like New England, Buffalo, and Philly have had long stretches of top tier performance while still winning it all at least once or twice.

I was going to say no new tournaments because the SHL workforce can be spread thin as it is-- especially simmers. But thinking about it now, it wouldn't be too taxing to hold an Olympics event every four seasons. It would be cool to have something longer term to look forward to in terms of career and make IIHF teams more engaged. There would be more time to prepare for each Olympics if it is every four seasons as there would only be one or two per year. I'm not sure how it would be differentiated from the current IIHF tournament though. Maybe different rules to keep things interesting. I think that the Olympics could be held during the regular season so that it does not step on the toes of the IIHF, and I think we should still have the IIHF even with the Olympics that season to keep the current tradition.

So someone got hold of some tickets for a playoff game in San Francisco against Philly, but all flights were fully booked so we had to charter a bus to get there all the way from Tampa Bay. For some reason they put me in charge or organising this thing. I am not sure what they were thinking. I guess they all wanted a really good time. First stop is New Orleans obviously. It was not really on the fastest route to San Francisco, but we had to stop here. We partied all night and drank way too much bourbon and went on our way the next day after we did some stocking up on supplies (more bourbon). second stop: Houston where we went to the space center and some informative stuff you know. It was kinda cool place to be at as well. After that we went to El Pasa and quickly crossed into Mexico to buy cheap prescribtion drugs for the trip. We skipped Phoenix and we went straight to Las Vegas where we spend the night at the black jack tables before we finally arrived in San Francisco to watch the game between the Pride and Forge. On the way back we did not stop anywhere, because we were tired AF.
