S80 SMJHL PT #0: New Places Due: Sunday, December 15th @ 11:59 PM PST
#31

Code:
Written Option: How does your player settle in the city? Who helps them to get started, someone from the team or maybe someone coming with them from home? What happens when they arrive to arena for the first time to check the lockerroom. How do their new teammates respond? Did they organize anything to welcome your player and the other draftees to the team? Must include at least 150 words.

Honza Havran had quite some adjusting to do after being drafted to the Carolina Kraken. Having spent most of his life in Czechia and a couple of weeks in San Diego last season with the Tidal, it was now time to really settled in somewhere new.

Luckily for Havran he has family who was able to help him out. Someone who also at one point in time had to deal with moving from Czechia to a differnt place for sports. Of course this was Corvo Havran, legendary quarterback in the ISFL. Together they were able to find a nice place for Honza to stay and get his house furniced and set up.

At the same time as moving houses and settling in, there was also the tiny thing of getting to know a completely new team. Havran together with the other rookies drafted in the S80 SMJHL draft were warmly welcomed by all the staff and player. They had a nice little social gathering to really get to know one another, which has already created some nice team cohesion.

There's barely hockey now and we got teams in Thunder Bay Ontario lol ok. Well I am meeting all my new homies, Brusie CR and the gang. Thunder Bay is going to eat ass this year in a good way. We are going to win the  4 star cup. Is that a probelm with you? Get real. OK well I am going to be not very good this year because thats the nature of things, isn't it? cant always get what you want etc etc. I am excited to be on a new team with new digs and new bonds to craft and smith. Soobin flew in the day after the draft to get settled in with his new teammate and roommate Leo Carlsson. When Soobin landed in Ottawa, Leo picked him up and they grabbed dinner before heading to their apartment. Soobin suggested they get korean food. Even though he just arrived in Ottawa, he already misses home. Thankfully for Soobin, him and Leo hit it off instantly. At their first practice as teammates, they knew their chemistry off ice would translate perfectly on ice as linemates. Everyone else on the team was super welcoming to Soobin along with all the other new draftees. Leo introduced Soobin to his good friend and teammate, Pavel Mintyukov. Soobin could tell that these two guys would become his good friends this season and for many more to come. After the first practice, the whole team went out for dinner and drinks to celebrate the new guys and get excited for the new season.

Waking up after falling asleep at home due to the fact Cauliflower Pizza dropped so late in the draft, he noticed that he had been selected by the San Diego Tidal. Pizza was sent a ticket via email by the GM and he was soon on the plane to San Diego. Upon landing in San Diego no ride had been arranged to get him to his hotel. Pizza being new to the city and not really knowing much English decided to map directions and walked 6 hours to his hotel. The next morning a bus picked him up and brought him to the rink where he met his new team. There was a bit of tension in the room due to the fact that the tidal had selected two goalies in this years draft. Pizza thinking he was the better choice of the two picked a locker furthest away from his goaltending partner. Pizza would finish the day avoiding any contact from anyone on the team and management. He spent the remainder of the week in his hotel refusing to leave and go to any team meetings during the offseason.

He overslept, and missed the draft. No Cheddar awakes on draft day to find the festivities over and he has slipped through the cracks. With no team and no clue of what happens next, he reaches out to close friend Hans Gronlund of the Whalers for advice. Hans invites him out to Vancouver where he has the chance to take part in some offseason practice the team was using to sharpen their skills before the season. He must have left some impression as scouts from multiple teams began to reach out to set up interviews to get to know him and find out what happened. At the end of the week, it turns out No Cheddar was already in the place where he would call home for the next few years. The Vancouver Whalers offered him a spot on the team and the transition from visiting to home came quickly. Hans helped him with a place to stay until he could get his first pay and find somewhere of his own but his transition into the new city was as easy as changing from tourist to local in a matter of days. In his first official practice, Cheddar makes his way to the locker room early to find it empty but his number and jersey already hanging up. In a deep breath he thinks to himself, this is it, this is home.

As I stepped off the plane, I held my breath and paused. I reflected on how far I have came in my athletic and life progression. Today is the day that I bid farewell to my simple life in the UK, crumpets and high tea with Mother on Wednesdays, and the blessed ground of our King Charles.

I am now stepping into a new era in my life, arriving at my first opportunity to play in the League I have dreamed so much about. There’s nothing quite like this feeling, a mixture of nerves and excitement. I stepped into the locker room at the world-class Carolina Kraken facility and I found my locker. “Radley Yates” it said, the name passed down through generations, that I have came to bear with pride. I hear a “Over here, Yates, ya lil’ London boy!” From an unknown voice across the room, and I smell the sweet, earthy smell of Orange Pekoe. I notice my teammates crowded around me, with my captain reaching out to cheers me with my own fresh cuppa’. It was at this moment, I knew. I was home.

"The great state of Maine welcomes Right Winger, Denali Neddleberg." Denali hears this over and over again in his sleep. He thinks hard about how he will make a name for himself in the SMJHL playing for this great team. For years in school and in his younger years, he has trained hard to be a force that can make a difference for the Timber. He thinks about his family back home. He knows that they are counting on him to make them proud. He remembers the words coming from his dying father. "My son, you have the power to create a great destiny, a legacy that many will be looking back and saying that they knew the right winger that could make a difference in the sport of hockey forever." Denali entered the locker room and held his gear by his side, "Together, I feel we are going to do great things." The SMJHL is never going to be the same but it will grow into something bigger, something grander.

The flight from Talladega to Vancouver was long and the farthest north I ever done traveled. I arrived to city and went to the team offices there I was given the team apartment and settled down there. Then I walked through the locker room ignoring all of the friendly his and welcomes and went straight to the ice. I am here for three things and three things only score goals, be fast, and kick some ass. And by god I am going to do that. I hop on the ice and do my normal training routine, suicides then shooting practice. Defense practice? Unnecessary the point of hockey is to score more goals than the other guys and so it doesn't matter if its 15-14 a win is a win goals are goals and goals are how you win. After all as my pop said for all of his life, if you aint first your last.

Jack finds Thunder Bay foreign but comfortably familiar, if a little cold. His time in the Naval Academy in Annapolis gave him an appreciation of the cold and the sea, and nothing pleases him more than the possibility of taking long swims in water he doesn’t have to worry about aches and injuries in. He’s also excited to do some fishing, something he got a hang of back home, with some of his new teammates. Many of his American friends are helping to get him his own place with his girlfriend Cathy, forgoing the usual wait time in which players opt for roommates or billet families. If Jack learned anything in the Navy, it was to be self-sufficient in new environments, as comfortable and hospitable as Thunder Bay is. It’s a skill that got him through his career, and he believes it’s a method that will suit a professional environment better than most.

It was not really hard for Reg Kirkby to settle in Anchorage. After all he spent many years of his youth in and around the city as both his father and grandfather played for the Armada at the start of their careers and the family has kept a spralling estate on the outskirts of the city ever since the days that Rex moved from Anchorage to West Kendall following his call up to the big league. So Reg knows the city or what would probably be more accurately described as a town after spending most of his early years in comparatively large Boston, Atlanta and Philadelphia. Most people around the town know the Kirkby's pretty well as a result and that means that Reg is made to feel welcome where ever he goes and now it is just a matter of putting it together on the ice so that the locals have something to cheers about over the next few seasons.
