I was very excited when we learned that the Montreal Patriotes would finally get the chance to participate in the Winter Classic this season. It's an incredible event that brings nostalgia to players that have grown up playing on ponds and hockey outside so it was very dear to my heart to get to play in one in my career. I knew right away that the SHL wouldn't host a Winter Classic in Montreal however, as we don't really have the facilities to host such a huge event here. You should've seen my face when the coach said we'd be playing in Texas. How the heck is that gonna happen? It doesn't even make sense. You want us to play outside when temperatures easily get over 40c? Will we have to play in the middle of the night when temperatures get closer to 20c? This isn't gonna work. But the SHL said they could make it work and so I trust the league and await patiently to my first ever Winter Classic. ![]() ![]() Registered Posting Freak

Celly grew up playing pond hockey, so playing outdoors is nothing new to them. Sure, maybe the Winter Classic game is a gimmick, and sure maybe it's just to sell tickets for the sake of The Experience, and sure, maybe it means the game is a lot less predictable. But there's still the aspect of fun in it, the little part of you that will revert to being that kid playing outdoors with just your gear and a puck and your pals from the neighborhood. It's just that now that game has stakes and is in front of thousands of people. Celly's preference for an opponent would probably be a team one of their friends is on: Chicago, Winnipeg, maybe Calgary. Because you really only get the nostalgia factor when you're pals all around the ice and not just on your own bench. When you can have the laugh about something stupid no matter who's around. ![]() ![]() Registered Senior Member

3WW Wingmate Roc did not get much chance to play hockey growing up, it is not so popular on the plane of Tarkir, which is why it's so unusual that he's so good at hockey and made it to the SHL. On Tarkir you mostly do monk stuff or riding elephant stuff, depends on which part of the plane you're on. Depending on the timeline that you're in, you might be even dodging dragons or biding their will, which unfortunately leads to a lot of death. I think that there is not that much difference to Wingmate Roc because he's used to the wind and that seems like the most different part of the whole experience. Hockey is hockey and Wingmate Roc can play. I don't really understand what makes the classic different than a stadium game, because of how the game is played so close to the ice and it's not like football where you throw the ball. ![]() Registered Member

Growing up in Las Vegas, an extremely new city to the front of hockey, it is rare to see not only an ice rink but anything that resembles an outdoor arena. Ice outdoors. Can you imagine it? Lewis Holl barely could. If that was not weird enough though, it started to snow for that outdoor game as well. What kind of weird situation to find yourself in when you come from a place that barely drops below 60 degrees on a cold day. But, alas, going to the pros gives a lot of opportunities for these sorts of new fields. It remains then that Lewis Holl was very new to the stage of something like that. But it did not seem like a gimmick to him at all. Despite never being a pond hockey sort of kid, Holl remained excited for the new challenge of playing outdoors especially in a weather that he was not totally familiar with. ![]() ![]() Registered Posting Freak Quote:Written Option 2: Hockey is great but there are so many other winter sports out there that you can spend your time with. Are there any other winter sports your player is or would have been interested if they didn’t start playing hockey? Something they watched or trained as kid? What sport you think your player would be best at and would they even have potential to be professional at that? Or maybe it is something they like to spend their time even as pro hockey player? How would your player do in general on the alternative timeline where they picked another winter sport over hockey? If he didn’t start playing hockey, it’s entirely possible that Jae-ik would be a master Curler. Curling is something that he loves watching on TV when the Olympics roll around, assuming that he’s not repping Canada on the ice at the time. There’s something very calming about the game that he enjoys, and it’s always a bonus when you can drink while playing a sport. I think he’d be good at slalom skiing too. He has great balance and athleticism, so can stay solid on his skis with his thicc thighs and generally stout lower body. There are also a million other skiing type sports that he could theoretically excel at for similar reasons, even some involving shooting. I guess he’d be OK at figure skating too. He’s a good skater, though not the best in the league. He tends to be more methodical and efficient in his movements, and may lack the flourish and style that are necessary to be good at figure skating. It’s not all about your ability to move around the ice at a high rate, after all. ![]() IIHF Commissioner IIHF Commissioner
Growing up in Poland I have a lot of fond memories playing games on an outside rink. I was very happy to hear Baltimore was chosen to play and host the Winter Classic, while it won't be the same as playing on a frozen pond or lake I think it will be a great experience for the fans and players alike. And even though it definitely is a gimmick to make more money and design and sell more merchandise I definitely like the it's something everybody involved will enjoy and have a good time participation in. As far as opponent I would go with a team that doesn't really have a winter like Atlanta and Tampa Bay. It doesn't really give us an advantage because most players around the world have experience playing hockey outside, but I think it would give their fans a cool new experience, maybe it will even snow for them.

I suppose Sunrise would appreciate snowboarding but he really does not have any proper training in any other ice sport. Personally, I find it a bit doubtful to even imagine him having a snowboarding career or anything because those tend to be rather strenuous and I fear he would not want to partake on it because of the injuries. Having to come up with an excuse for him to do so would probably be a bit hard but I guess maybe he could have gone with it to impress a girl or something... and then just sort of stuck with it.
He would then go compete on the SSX 3 circuit, win a bunch of medals and probably piss off Mac. Probably because he is a bit of a git and easy to annoy, I haven't played the game in quite a while anyway. Maybe I should go do that once I am done writing this whole thing. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Player Page - Update Page ![]() Former Players: Yoshimitsu McCloud (LW, #64) - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Won a Four Star Cup once, knew ninjutsu, picture editors hated him, never tried free agency Anton Harrier (LW, #90) - ![]() ![]() ![]() Won WJC gold, liked skateboarding a lot, went to the finals with Manhattan, kept his seat glued in LR ![]() Registered x9 Duck of the Year
Now, while it is known that I am an animal that typically lives outside for the majority (aka all) of the year, I’ve never actually had the pleasure of playing ice hockey outside. It’s always been in an arena. I think it would be a great opportunity to help grow the game and to shine a light on this league in a good way. As for my performance, I’ve been pretty consistent throughout my career, but this would be a whole nother level. As most people know, us birds fly south for the winter because we don’t like the cold. So playing a whole game outside may be difficult if it’s in the freezing temperatures. I would probably have to get a whole body warmer just so my bridle bones don’t snap in half on my first check. that said, I would figure it out and dominate per usual. The fans would be chanting my name at the end.

Call him a purist, but given Derek Martin literally grew up playing on a frozen pond, shooting pucks made of cow poop because they couldn't afford the real things, on a hand me down stick his father used to play with, there's some level of tradition and logic behind outdoor games. Its cultural, its vivid and raw within the people who've lived through the outdoor rinks in the childhood, the early staturday mornings with your friends just playing some pickup 3 on 3. So when it comes to the Los Angeles Panthers of all teams, a team who's never seen snow or ice around their arena, an outdoor game is a pure money grabbing gimmick, a leech move by the filthy Head Office shills who only want to make a buck out of what's been one of the more dominant franchises in the S70's. I think there's even reason to shame them, shame all of them, especially that fraud of a french man, Fraudchie, what a joke.

Growing up in Japan, there are some outdoor rinks. However, the game of ice hockey is nowhere near as popular in Japan as it is in much of the Western world and certainly not as popular as it is specifically In North America. As I’ve learned about some of my teammates leading up to this year’s winter classic, I am surprised by the sheer amount of them that had annual access to rinks outdoors where they would play outside in the elements. Having now spent more than a few winters traveling around in north america, I have absolutely no doubt that a fair number of my teammates are really crazy fellas. Who would choose to play outdoors when you might fall through a lake or a pond and end up dead so frequently? In any case, I am looking forward to playing outdoors in a professional game. It isn’t an opportunity that all kids who grow up playing get a chance to experience. And for every young kid growing up in Japan, I hope they will see me playing on this big stage and take more opportunities to skate on the frozen ponds of our great country next time they have freezing temperatures.

Growing up in Sweden, Willow had a lot of opportunities to play outdoor hockey on many of the frozen rivers and lakes, so getting to play in a Winter Classic will be like a lifelong dream come true. Playing on that rink will just be like reliving her childhood days, albeit just in front of a lot more people this go around. The only concern would be it cannot be a home game just because Los Angeles does not yield to good outdoor ice conditions. If we were able to pick our opponent for a game like this it would likely be Minnesota or someone like Montreal, places with a deep rooted history in hockey that also have connections to the outdoor game experience. As for the players, some might view it as a gimmick event to generate more revenue but most view it as something more, it’s a way to bring hockey back to the origins before mega stadiums and similar, just two teams on a sheet of ice. ![]() ![]() ![]() | PTS: 7 | BLK: 45 | +/-: 6 | PTS: 4 | BLK: 10 | +/-: 0 ![]() Registered Senior Member |
