Deep Dive #1 - The Seattle Argonauts (S65 to S79)
#1

Today I will look at the period of the Argonauts where my older player, Wendolene Ramsbottom played for the team and see how the team kind of evolved in my time with the team. We definitely went through some highs and some lows. But that's just natural I think. Let's first look at the record:

S65: 90 points (4th)
S66: 86 points (7th)
S67: 90 points (5th)
S68: 111 points (1st)
S69: 103 points (2nd)
S70: 98 points (3rd)
S71: 58 points (14th)
S72: 54 points (14th)
S73: 33 points (18th)
S74: 16 points (19th)
S75: 17 points (19th)
S76: 24 points (20th)
S77: 41 points (18th)
S78: 50 points (17th)
S79: 59 points (13th)

As you can clearly see, there was a very interesting trend there. From a really good team at first, to the best or really one of the top teams for a brief moment and then a SUDDEN huge jump down, all the way to the lower midfield and then a period of being among the worst teams in the league, before slowly coming back up. A trend that continued further in S80, where they are currently at 69 points and in 3rd place with 16 games to go. It is the quintessential dominating team that goes through a rebuild and then slowly improves again. Hats off to the GMs for building this team, obviously it was a juggernaut at first and now slowly getting back to that strength, even if it did take a good like... 8 seasons of badness.

It is also interesting to see that Seattle won two championships in that time, back to back in S67 and S68. S68 was obviously the strongest season by them, but to even have it already won in S67 is great stuff. They had even made the finals already in S66 too. And as the 7th team, that is pretty great! After the two titles, two round 3 exits followed (semi finals), which isn't terrible but when you are among the top teams, it must still feel like a bit of a downfall anyway.

Comparing this with my players stats is interesting. You would think that i might have done best in the successful years, and obviously the +/- is certainly best in those years, but my best season points wise was S72 where I scored 44 points, the most in any season by quite a bit. But that was already part of the rebuild a little. My shot blocks on the other hand (the category i was best in, ended up 3rd all time!), definitely did raise a LOT in those bad seasons. It got all the way from 191 to 290 in S74 and then stayed above 266 every season after that until my retirement. I obviously focused a lot on it then, but it was still a cool thing to see!

It was definitely interesting to spend my entire career with the same team, going from a top contender to a rebuilder. I appreciate that the team never traded me away for that team based record hunt and such. But I guess I am also not opposed to going to multiple teams in the future. We shall see.
