The San Diego Tidals S80 SMJHL Draft Class Analysis by a GM

Alrighty, the San Diego Tidal are a new team in the SMJHL, only barely existing for 4 season, but this was probably their biggest draft class yet and they really decided to go all in on this core group of youngsters.

Their first pick was 3rd overall, grabbing Dee Centermen IV. Dee is like his name says a big body centermen, who wants to play rough and tough defensively. He has great endurance on the ice and is able to chew away big minutes already at such a young age. He will be a long term stud for the Tidal here at 3.

The next pick was at pick number 10. The Tidal traded up here to grab another pick in the first round. They were able to select Baldur-Ulysse Söderberg-Tremblay. BUST is one of three Soderberg-Tremblay twins in this draft, with his sister going first overall and his other brother still on the board. BUST comes into the draft as a top goalie prospect on a team that needs a goalie. Really good intangibles and reflexes, but lacks work on his skating and puck handling may hinder him at first, but those can be worked on.

Back to back picks at 19 and 20 here for the Tidal and they are able to grab a center and a winger. Captain Obvious at wing is fast and plays good defensive hockey. He has really good accuracy with his shot and should be a top player for the Tidal in a few seasons.

Brett McMann was taken right after Captain Obvious at 20. Brett is another center, which the Tidal appear to be collecting now. However, as of right now Brett is a bit more of a complete center, as he is above average at the faceoff dot. He will need to work on his offensive side of the game however. Look for him to practice up on his passing and hopefully add some defensive consistency.

At 30 we finally see the last of the Soderberg-Tremblays come off the board. Phoenix-Orion is taken here and he is happy to join his brother in San Diego I’m sure. Phoenix is a bit of an anomaly when it comes to his style. He is an offense first player, but has the ability to get back on the play if needed. Big and strong on his skates, he is a good skater and is hard to get off the puck, though he does lack some agility and speed.

At 35 the Tidal get their second goalie of this draft, taking Cauliflower Pizza. Much like BUST he is really good with his pads and has good skills in net. He is a little better with his stick, but still lacks a bit of depth when it comes to skating. Hopefully San Diego has a good goalie coach and these two will be up in the top of the league for a while.

Last but not least, well maybe least, at 51 the Tidal selected Ethan Hamilton. A really good offensive player, who can consistently win at the face off dot, but unfortunately lacks some depth and needs to do a bit of work. Hopefully he can get to work and try to make an impact for the Tidal.
