The S80 SMJHL Playoffs are over and now it is time for Postseason Bonanza!
Wait! What's this? Here's how PB will work: there are several tasks, each of which is worth varying amounts of TPE for putting in a little effort, for a maximum of 16 possible TPE total. You can mix and match, complete them in any order and do as few or as many as you would like (up to 16 TPE). Recreates, you will find this slightly different than CW. Here's how TPE will be earned: For every 50 words you write about a prompt, you will earn 1 TPE. That scales on, so 100 words for 2 TPE, 150 words for 3 TPE, etc. If you wanted to 800 words about one prompt, that would be 16 TPE right then and there. The graphics TPE scale has remained the same. IMPORTANT NOTE: Please, after every prompt you write about add a Word Count (ie. 150 words). This will greatly help the PT Team! ONLY S80 SMJHL ROOKIES (S81 Players) CAN EARN TPE for Postseason Bonanza TASKS. If you signed after the trade deadline and are going into the S81 SMJHL Draft, this task is not for you. You may claim affiliation from an (one, 1) ISFL, PBE or SSL PT this season for a max of 3 TPE. Deadline: Sunday, February 9th at 11:59PM PST Without further ado, here are our prompts! IIHF Federation Head Old Man Quote:18. Milestones Infy's Milestone Claim +3 TPE Quote:3. Secret Plans This one is pretty easy. The San Diego Tidal have been looking to gain any and every advantage they can against their opponents and they believe that they have found the best way to do so in lacing the opposing drinks with performance enhancing drugs and/or alcohol. If the opposing teams were to fail drug and alcohol testing before or after the game, then they would be forced to forfeit said game, giving the Tidal an instant win and propelling them to the top of the leaderboards and likely to a point where they would win the cup by default as every other team in the league would be on probation due to their past failures in drug and alcohol testing. While this may raise some obvious eyebrows, having fifteen other teams all crash and burn on a technicality, the Tidal will take a win in any shape or form they can get it, your obvious and new S81 champs. (161 Words) +3 TPE Quote:12. On the Radar Captain Obvious comes into the Season 81 SHL draft with a unique outlook for many teams looking to draft a forward. He is strong and defensive minded, unlike many of the pure shooters and playmakers the league has seen more recently, and he shows his strength and his willingness to sacrifice his body to make a play each and every shift he is on the ice. His selfless play and displays of physicality have rubbed off on his teammates, who then follow his example, willing to throw their bodies into the fray to create plays, separation, and even to just cause pure chaos on the ice. The number of power play chances created by doing this is impressive, as is the turnover rate on those chances created, third in the SMJHL this past season with a 23.8% conversion rate on powerplays. They also aren't afraid to take a penalty making these chances, as they presented the second best PK unit in the league with a 82.9% kill ratio. Because of this, Captain Obvious' clear draft value is undeniable. His willingness to inspire his teammates with his unselfish, and clearly physical, playstyle, as well as his clear value on the penalty kill, should make him a top target for most teams in the SHL looking to shore up the protection of their own blue zone, allowing their offensive players the ability to attack with less pressure to defend, as well as giving their defensive core, and goaltender, extra breathing room to perform admirably. (252 words) +5 TPE Quote:15. Charity Drive Captain Obvious has always had a soft spot for animals, specifically dogs, and donates a large portion of his time, energy, and love towards local shelters and the ASPCA in San Diego. His contributions include helping to organize adoption events, using his name and team status to help increase the attendance at the adoption events, being willing to sign autographs and hand out free team merch to those willing to donate or adopt (though the adopters need to be properly vetted first of course.) He also had no problem donation funding to the shelters and the ASPCA itself, being able to properly take care of shelter dogs is an important part of the community and helps to get them adopted out faster, safer, and in a healthier condition than they otherwise might have been without the proper care, veterinary check ups, and medicine for any underlying conditions. Having an animal love you is a type of unconditional love that I feel you just can't find with other people. Captain Obvious' affection for animals, dogs especially, really shows, as he has two rescue dogs of his own and helps to foster several more during the offseasons, allowing them to stay in a loving home and play with other dogs, interacting with both people and other pets, showing them support and love that they deserve. It's important that the world knows how meaningful and caring a true animal companion can be, and that we do not deserve the kind of emotional support and kindness that we receive from them. 6. Team History
I know history isn't everyone's favorite thing to discuss, but a team's past can really define its identity, what its known for and who they are in the present. Tell us about your team's past! Have there been any franchise defining moments that are integral to your team or even SHL history? Conversely, is there some interesting tidbit that not many around the league know? The Kelowna Knights are an extremely storied franchise, theyve been around since i think season 10, or maybe sooner, point being with a franchise that has existed since atleast 2013 theres destined to be some stories and some names that are well known for one reason or another, starting with: David Corrigan, the most recent name added to Kelowna Knights history, a virtue to hold the title, most rookie points EVER, despite finishing 2nd in rookie points, The Scot TM did this on a team projected very very low in the standings, 76 points in one season is good on a team like the knights, still currently finding an identity, and managed to handedly take a playoff with, with DC being a big part of the core for the next three season Kelowna also had a recorder tying point getter on the roster, compared to some franchises, kelownas never truly had standout insane players, but this roster might be the one to do it, considering Mel Guolla just tied the all time record for points at 81, and DC now at 3rd after his rookie campaign, i have a feeling this leaderboard is going to quickly do a 180 to all currently active players by the time s83 roles around, were in the beginning of the good times and we can feel it Despite this team being around for so long, theyre very similar to one professional hockey team in Toronto, had good years in the early days, but havent been back to the cup with the new playoff format that was introduced some seasons ago and has only seen success in the regular season, the main difference being is Kelowna saw a cup final recently, in S78, we went through current back to back champion Quebec City Citadels in the first series, toppled the Walleye in the 2nd Series, Beat Yukon in 6 to head to the cup final, all just to come up short against the Timber in 6 games. The teams last cup victory was many many moons ago, many team records broken, many great players to come through this team on their way to the show, and have retired in that time, we haven't won a cup since S59, back when there were only 12 teams, and only one side of the bracket we have now, and one of the strangest plyoff set ups, everyone make playoffs as they do now, but FOUR TEAMS HAD BYE ROUNDS, which it makes sense if everyone has to make the playoff but JEEZ im glad thats gone i wouldve had an aneurism looking at that, as i just did moments ago Kelownas S59 cup winning team consisted of some really impressive stats and players as a whole. for starters Kelowna finished in 1st, ahead of cup runner up, Anchorage Armada, Anchorage was the only team to reach 90 points this season in 66 games, and Kelowna reached 102 points in 66 games, scoring alot of goals and not allowing that many despite the starting goalie having below .900, kinda goes to show how weird Js sv% are very unreliable as a data point, alot of goals get scored, your defense has to do alot of damage in helping the goalie keep the puck out of the back of the net, but at the same time you have to be able to pile in the goals, which this S59 Kelowna team was more than capable of both of these this team had a DIFF of +118, which is even crazier when you see that the next best DIFF is +83, thats utter domination in this category, having the most goals for, at 275, thats and average of over 4 goals a game, and the 2nd lowest goals against at 157, narrowly being beaten by the beserkers at 151. 151 GA over 66 games brings us to right about 2.3 goals against on average, thats not just winning, thats winning handily But whats even more fascinating about this team, they didnt have a single 70 point scorer, not one, Cian McFelter was the only point getter above 60, at 68, there was no single stand out other than this guy, and after reviewing the entire league, NOT ONE PERSON BROKE THE 70 POINT BARRIER, every SINGLE player finished with 69 (nice) or less, and Cian is the only player from this kelowna team on the points leaderboard, and the armada have 4 players in the top 10, and 3 of the top 4 aswell, the only exception is our own Cian McFelter. so if we didnt really lead in points with multiple players, how did we lead the league in goals for you might ask thats because we had 11 skaters with 40 or more points, with our second and third place point getters both getting 54, the points were spread so evenly that it almost looks like a government program was put in place to spread the points more equally, thats called taxes ladies and gentlemen. but its crazy how many skater had so many points, for sake of comparison, on how few points were scored in this era of the SMJHL, this seasons 2nd round out knights had 3 players over 70 and 10 players with 40 points or more, so even thought the ceiling was lower, the average seems to be higher, just astonishing work, i almost want to compare them to that Canadiens team that made a cup final what 5 years ago, just a high average. Overall this team had one standout, but mostly alot of players just doing their job and doing it well, and it made the most dominant kelowna knights cup win happen in recent ish memory. we hope to see the cup again soon, thanks for reading! not including the prompt i added, this post is 965 words, ly pt team <3 also for the record EJ: 32 PIM (bailed by games played XD) 102 hits 44 take aways 143 shot blocks all count for milestones

2. Looking Towards the Future (103 words, +2 TPE) The Detroit Falcons finished the season last overall. They need to improve everywhere. While most of the improvement will come from developing their prospects, they need to draft very well in the upcoming draft. Major holes are going to be opening on an already weak team. Their leading scorer, Jeffrey Bjelland, is graduating to the SHL. Their top defenseman, Elliot Alderson, is graduating as well. Those are 2 major holes that will likely be filled by rookies and sophomores. Future goaltending appears to be set with John Gibson, so the Falcons need to focus on getting forwards and defensemen in the upcoming draft. 3. Secret Plans (111 words, +2 TPE) As I've said, Detroit is in a dire state and need to do anything they can to win games next season. There are rumors that some of the players will be trying out a unique diet. They originally thought of eating a falcon's diet, but that carries too much risk of disease. However, falcons do eat duck. So for this offseason, some of the prominent Detroit players will be exclusively eating duck-based dishes. Duck Confit for the Frenchman Mathieu Mathematique. Smoked Duck for the classic North Americans. Peking Duck for those looking for a taste of Chinese cuisine. Depending on how Detroit performs next season, this could become the new fad. #4: Funtimes +3 TPE
As the team's resident fun director, there's nothing I'd rather do with my budget than take the team to some amusement parks. I've already done the legwork, and Vancouver has a few home parks within day trip distance, most notably Playland in downtown Vancouver and Wild Waves over in Washington State. Neither of these are great parks, but they are at least good for a few bonding hours with the team and to find out which teammates are scaredy-cats. If I wanted to go all out, though, I'd book the team flight tickets. Going to Disneyland is the tradition of a team that wins the championship, and we sure didn't, but there are better options anyways! We'll fly out as a team over to Los Angeles and go visit Six Flags Magic Mountain, with nearly 20 roller coasters to keep us entertained. We'll see how arrogant Noxus is after a spin or two on X2 or Tatsu. (157 words) #9: What's in a Name? +2 TPE I love good player names. I've already written about the names in my draft class, so I won't double on that, but in the class above me there are also a number of bangers if not quite as many as S81 has. Rodwin Dionicio is super unique but it rolls right off the tongue. Kim Chaewon, Uwe Bindewald, Arvinder Singh, and Drew McIntyre are pretty awesome. Hans Gronlund and Aaron Noxus are simple, clean, and powerful, and it's cool to have them both on Vancouver. But obviously the best of them all is the newly christened Florence-Amelie Mackenzie, because it's got a sick selection of first names, it's pretty, and the best names are always the ones people choose for themselves. (121 words) #16: Goals +1 TPE My player goals are pretty simple – to have fun and to put up good stats. Getting Hall of Fame would be crazy, so I'm not realistically expecting to reach it, but I want to have a long and satisfying career with as good an offensive player as I can possibly build. Anything beyond that is gravy. (56 words) #17: Feedback +4 TPE I had a pretty positive experience with the PTs! My favorite little thing are the mini PTs because they give the chance to write little teasers that I can flex some creative writing with in the short format. The PTs themselves are pretty similar to what I am already comfortable with in the ISFL; it is great though to have the affiliate option, because it gives me twice as many options each week as to which prompt I felt compelled to write about. The Primetime predictions were fine enough, around equivalent with doing weekly predictions in the ISFL but with a bit less variance for luck which is appreciated. I will say that the Deep Dives certainly felt intimidating as a new create, especially as someone who is unfamiliar with the game of hockey in general. I really had to think outside the box to find topics that I could actually write 500 words on without coming across as a complete idiot. However, the final product did turn out great and I actually read quite a few other users' Deep Dives when I was interested in their chosen subjects, so it wasn't a complete nightmare. Just something I'm glad I don't have to do again. (205 words) #18: Milestones +3 TPE ISFL Affiliate +3 TPE Total: 16/16 TPE

3. Secret Plans It’s never too early to start thinking about how you’re going to gain a competitive edge next season! How is your team going to go the extra mile to get wins next season? Is it a secret training regimen? Sneaky equipment modifications? Booby trapping the visiting teams’ locker room? Anything goes. Kelowna was playing in unknown territory this past season. We really had no idea what to expect and our training showed that at first. We had players all over the place figuring out what worked for them and their skills. Practices were always something of a nightmare because you never know which teammate would come in with a different move they wanted to practice. Since we are a smorgasbord of different nationalities and countries it seemed like everyone had a special trick they wanted to share. One guy even tried to convince us that imitating a rubber duck, and ducks in general was the way to go. It was much to our surprise that the two things that worked the most was occult magic in the form of our very own wizard and... the ducks themselves. So how do we now translate success into strategy to keep building? It is going to have to be a combination of all of the different aspects we learned from the past year plus a little extra sauce. First we have to beef up the occult magic. A little extra voodoo hoodoo to get the pucks to stick on our sticks more and get that extra over under on the other teams. This will really help with our passing cohesion and just general mockery of other teams when they see us skate in our magically empowered boots. So in order to keep up with this magic many in the team have been insisting we focus on upping our physicals and our just general body abilities. Magic is multiplicative and works better when it has some underlying numbers to build off. 3x1 is still only 3 but 3x14? Now we're hitting big numbers. So watch out as we become rolling fire on the ice. Once we have the augmentation all set up, its about the rituals. This is where the ducks come in. You see, rubber ducks have two very special qualities which we liked to combine with magic in order to really bring out our full potential. In the first place, they are rubber. Have you every seen the movie flubber? Now imagine flubber but on ice, with people going really really fast. The occult magicv melts the rubber ducks and infuses them with our bodies. Now when we are hit, other players bounce right off and usually fall down allowing us to move with ease. The rubber is so reactive that we also hit them and the same thing happens, but not to us. No we stay upright because of our conditioning and magic boots. So now we have this unfair advantage where we have this protective armor that just envelops us with this might protection and we have speed and skills. The last piece of the puzzle is how are we going to improve ourselves to best the other team's goalie. The only thing that stands in our way. The answer here is that there is not going to be any magic or special abilities. It is going to have to come down to numbers and straight up puck assault. Without a team to support them we will start averaging 60-75 shots a night with the entire time spent in the offensive zone. We will cycle pucks and demoralize the other team until it is just the goalie playing against 5 players. It will be glorious. Some of us will dance and some of us will shoot. Some of us will sing and some will just sit there and read textbooks about drilling holes right behind the goalie. We are going to create a new masterclass of all masterclasses on distraction. When we put it all together, we are going to be some supreme magical force fueled by taunts and rubber, who fight like ducks. Go Kelowna. (638 words) 1. Fan Appreciation Day Your team is giving back to their supporters by holding a fan appreciation day for one of their games, where the team will hand out a special commemorative item to show thanks for their continued support of the franchise. You have been tasked to design the product to be given out to the attendees (can be a rally towel, foam finger, bobble head, etc.) Write a blurb about the item, including details on during which game was / will be given out. So Kelowna heard of a wonderful American institution called Medieval Times and realized that they could use that model to adapt and create their own unique event with the same theme and take. They worked with marketing extraordinaries to work on rebranding parts of the ice and different booths and sections of the arena into a model of a coliseum with tournaments. Besides the fact that big old shanks of mutton and roasts were being offered as well as other medieval reminisces, the main attraction that is going to be offered is a joust for kids under the age of 4 that would get to ride on the shoulders players as they skated (slowly) against a machine that would try to knock them down. Part of the attraction would also have been crowning a king and queen from amongst the crowd as well as other fun titles. (150 words)

1. Fan Appreciation Day
Ladies and gentlemen, we hear at the Nevada Battleborn would like to thank our fans on our final regular season home game. First is a team rally towel. It will be white with "#JustRamIt" in team colours to show team pride and to drive that joke further into the ground than it already is. Then, the first 100 fans to show up will be given a Billy the Goat bobble head, except the first one will be a misprint with sharp horns that can poke an eye out. Then, we will have our usual 50/50 draw, with further prizes throughout the game like a team shirt, an autographed jersey, and a Billy the goat plush, a preview of the new "Nevada Zoo" line for the next season. But you can get it today. Not included is the Badger for Badger Hennessy, a Kiwi for Kiwi, a Beaver for Claude L'Castor, and a Fish for Ryan Fishman. Word Count: 157 words (+3 TPE) 2. Looking Towards the Future I have written an entire Deep Dive on this in which I went over 1000 words into the previous, ongoing, and the future hopes for the Nevada Battleborn. So, do you wish for the sparks notes version? Here we go. The Nevada Battleborn will not have to worry about a single graduating player this upcoming season. Instead it will be mostly the same team with, hopefully, more TPE. There is one glaring issue we have that is a must for us. Defense. Despite Singh, Kiwi, and Badger all being great defense in their own rights, it is hard to win a championship when you only have three active defense, the rest being IA forward converts. We lack our first round pick, but with our Forward core looking downright scary, a stabilizing force in net with "The Dam," we NEED at least one active defenseman in the draft, perhaps another in waivers. So please, stop creating goalies, new sign ups, create defense! Pretty please. Word Count 163 (+3 TPE) 9. What's in a Name? The best name WAS Cauliflower Pizza, however, he has wronged me in my personal life. Oh, you think this is funny? I'm going to channel my inner Eddie Kingston, THIS IS REAL! IT'S REAL! First, I got out-goalied by a Vegetable in the playoffs, standing on my head while he did the same. Then, the next day at work at a grocery store, there was one box I was looking for all day. It was on the list of missing items and I was determined to find it and get it resolved. Turns out, it was in the wrong section of the freezer. It was in another department's behind, A BOX OF CAULIFLOWER PIZZA CRUST! I COULD NOT AVOID THEM! So the new and real best name is Badger Hennessy. Why? Because of this gem. Word Count: 135 (+2 TPE) 18. Milestones Here. (+3 TPE) 14. R&R Claude's off-season, given the upcoming SHL draft, will not be the most relaxing. First of all, he was selected as a goaltender for Team Canada Black in the World Junior Championships. Though Peanutbutter Zamboni will likely be the starter, Claude will likely see the ice for some games and it will be a chance to improve as a player. He is also in consideration for Team Quebec at the IIHF Championships. Facing against the pros, he will likely be in too deep for his status as a rookie, but the exposure of representing his home province on the world stage can be a great experience for him and he can use the chance to learn a few things from the professionals around him. If he thought facing Quebec City was rough, you have not seen anything yet. Once things finally die down, he will likely come home for a few weeks to Laval. He will see Mama L'Castor, meeting the cat she got in person at last. She calls her Molly. He's also considering a little trip with her to Europe, either to France or to Italy. He will hope to keep a regular workout routine while at home, and maybe go for some morning or evening jogs while on vacation to stay active while being able to see the sights. If he has time, he may go to the city that drafts him to see the facilities and the town. Though his debut will likely not be for another couple seasons at minimum, it will be nice to get the lay of the town, maybe meet some future teammates. Here's hoping he has a good off-season and will have time to relax. Word Count: 283 (+5) 16/16

2. Looking Towards the Future
The S79 is already behind us which means the SMJHL draft will be happening soon. Going into next season, what are your team's biggest needs and areas of strength? Do any holes need to be filled with call-ups? Do you have a position that is incredibly stacked? Give us all an overview of your team, from top to bottom. Over the past 2 seasons, The Vancouver Whalers have both performed as expected, and exceeded expectations in terms of growth and I believe have set themselves up for a very strong Season 81 and Season 82. With no call ups announced so far, The Whalers appear to be keeping their main core of Aaron Noxus, Hans Gronlund, Zach Mulder and Florence-Amelie Mackenzie. This past season, they added a lot of key contributors to their roster with rookies like River Yekaterina Volkova, Matthew Leroux, Joe Primeau, Franjo Frankopan Jelacic, Lancer Frappe, No Cheddar and If you Ain't First. With these players staying on the team for the coming season, Vancouver has solidified their top 2 defensive pairs, at least 1 spot on one of their top 2 lines, and their starting goaltender. With these secured roster spots in mind, What direction should the Whalers be going in the draft? With the 5th overall pick, They should be targeting a top line wing or center to take the ice with Aaron and River. Solidifying this top line will add some consistency to an already potent first line. The next addition should be a goaltender of the future who will look to back up the workhorse that Mackenzie has had to be over the last 2 seasons. This will help with Vancouver's games where Mackenzie doesn't start but also be a continuance to allow Vancouver to have some secure goaltending in the post Mackenzie era. The skaters strength of this team will come from the top defensive pair of Hons Gronlund and Zach Mulder. With both players uncapping to 425 tpe, they're looking to take another step forward in trying to anchor this team. These 2 compliment each other perfectly with Mulder being a 2-way defenseman and Gronlund being fully focused on defense. Their support will be what will allow Florence-Amelie Mackenzie to flourish into a top goalie in the SMJHL. As the backbone of this entire roster, facing more shots than any netminder the last 2 seasons, Mackenzie will be in position to finally win some hardware for the tenacity she's shown in the crease. Uncapping to 425 TPE should allow her to cover any prior weaknesses and will put the onus solely on the Vancouver skaters to pull their weight. Offensively, this Vancouver team will look to 3rd year winger Noxus to kick his game into high gear. Aaron will look to send his goal numbers into the top of the league alongside the support from the now second year center River. River will be looking to improve on what she's already provided for the Whalers and continue providing a very balanced style of play while remaining as a top scorer on the team. Rounding out the first line, We have the defensive focused Matthew Leroux. Leroux played last season with a high level of efficiency considering the Whalers situation. He finished the year with the 4th best +/- on the team and will continue to look to support our top defensive pair while increasing his offensive production to fill any gaps necessary. Second line wingers Joe Primeau and If you Ain't First will both be trying to continue their upward trend of progression, with both players hitting their TPE cap of 350 after their rookie season, Joe Primeau will be looking to get better in both offensive and defensive attributes while Ain't First has leaned further into trying to score and be a big contributor in points for the coming seasons. Although Franjo won't be hitting the TPE cap prior to season 81, he'll still be looking to support our two second line wingers with his playmaking abilities and be strong force in increasing our possession numbers with his skills in the face off circle. If Frankopan continues to earn, he could drive one of these second line wingers into superstardom before our time in the SMJHL is over. Our second pair defense, consisting of No Cheddar and Lancer Frappe, will both look to be at their 350 TPE cap to start this season. Trying to continuing the trend of having one defensive leaning and one more offensive defender, No Cheddar will look for a massive improvement in the playmaking and point scoring department while continuing his efforts on creating takeaways to give more possessions to his team. Frappe on the other hand had a very good season blocking shots on the second pair and will look to continue providing that support to help out Mackenzie in goal and make up for any defensive short comings of his pairing partner. This roster make up feels like taking advantage of a strong championship window for the Whalers after the leg work that went into building this team the past 2 seasons. With the oldest players on the roster being season 79, as long as there are no call ups, Vancouver appears to be in an excellent position to succeed. 817 words not including the prompt (+16 TPE) |
