After being drafted 7th overall in the season 7 draft by the Manhattan Rage, Rachel Belmont has signed a 3 year contract valued at 3.5 million per year. We have been able to contact her for a brief interview about the situation. So our first question, were you surprised you went 7th overall, or to the Rage?

I wasn't really surprised. It was a very deep draft, especially in the first couple of rounds and I think there were a lot of skilled players, and each team has different needs for building their team. So its not much of a surprise, besides I was still picked in the first round so I hope I can develop into a player worthy of that draft position.

Are you happy with the being drafted and signing with the Rage?

Absolutely. Just like I said going into the NWJHL draft last season, I would be happy playing for any team that wanted to draft me and that hasn't changed. The draft saw a player they could use to strengthen their team in me, and I hope to grant them just that. I am grateful for the opportunity they have given me and they offered a very fair contract so it was an easy decision to sign the entry level contract.

What opinions do you have on other players that have been drafted by the Rage?

Its an awkward situation, for now at least. A few of the guys I'm going to be playing with in Manhattan are rivals I'm competing against in the NWJHL finals that's going on right now, but I guess there's no better way to see what they're capable of. There are a few players that also are a part of the Stingrays organization so its nice to have a few familiar faces. Having so many NWJHL finalists with the Rage definitely shows that we have some playoff performers on the team though. Everyone I've seen from the team so far though has been very welcoming, it should be a great group of players.

What's it going to be like playing alongside your former Seattle co-GM, Mike Ochocinco?

I was able to see in the world juniors tournament what a strong defenseman Mike is so its definitely going to be a big plus having him back there to cover my rookie mistakes. Hopefully he's not too tired of my locker room babble by now either, haha

What kind of opportunities do you think you'll have playing for the Rage as opposed to some other teams?

Well from what I know, the Rage are a very strong defensive team, but they had a few holes on the wing. Being a winger I think that should give me a lot of opportunities to play with some powerful centers and get some time on the first or second lines. Its definitely looking like a great team to play for as a rookie in my position and I'm excited to get started.

Last question, what is your mindset going into the SHL?

The same thing its always been. I'm going to work hard to become a top competitor. It all comes down to hard work and I'm definitely going to be bringing my A game to the SHL.
