No one knew what to expect out of the SMJHL this season. The league was wide open, and it looked like every team had a very good chance at making a run for the cup.
With a record of 11-3-1, the Vancouver Whalers have put themselves in a good position to contend in the playoffs. Everyone is contributing on the ice for the Whalers. Offensively, rookie Magnus Jakobsen leads the team with 9 goals and 15 points. Chris Lakes has also added 8 goals and 6 assists. Zygaldo, Hogan, Backstrom, and Heisenberg are all in the double digits for assists on the team. Rookie goalie Gustav Grimm has been excellent for the Whalers with a record of 10-3-1. Grimm has also posted a .899 save percentage and a 2.74 goals against average. As a team overall, the Whalers lead the SMJHL in goals for with 4.07 goals per game. A big part of that is their powerplay, which is second in the league at 25%. The offense has been a huge part of the Whalers winning ways, but so has their defense. Vancouver is tied for first in the SMJHL with 2.73 goals against per game. Their penalty kill is second, at 93.55 %. Finally, the Whalers give up the least shots in the league as they give up 27.76 shots per game. The Whalers have been able to come together as a team so far this season. Only 15 games in, things are very positive for the team with two straight championships. 257 words 1 picture
