PGS S52 Game 97: Kelowna Knights @ Vancouver Whalers
#1

Knights Knights 2, Whalers 3 (SO) Whalers
Game Link

Last night's game featured an entertaining matchup between two regional rivals in the SMJHL, as the Kelowna Knights visited the Pacific Coliseum to tangle with the Vancouver Whalers on their three-game homestand. In the two teams' first meeting of the season, the Whalers took a convincing 6-2 decision on their home ice.
The first period of the game didn't get off to a very good start for the Whalers. Only 99 seconds into the game, Knights centre Morgan Forestier won a faceoff in his own end, but while battling for the puck, Whalers rookie winger William Hartmann caught Forestier up high with his stick, earning him a trip to the box. Fortunately, the Whalers' strong defensive gameplan helped a PK unit led by Stracimir Petrovic kill off the entire penalty without an opposing shot on goal. The Whalers power play would, in turn, get a chance go to to work when Kelowna defenseman Alex Ranch was whistled for holding. The unit was more effective, being able to direct three shots towards goalie Luca Del Vecchio and three more that just missed, but the end of the first period arrived without a score.
In the second period, Vancouver's third line, which hadn't done much in the first frame, really showed what they were capable of about three minutes in. After a dump-in by Kelowna's Michael Preeb, second-year Whalers defenseman Sabo Tage kickstarted the breakout with a good outlet pass to Miro Slapskinnenen, who got the puck to Nicholas Corrigan. Corrigan put together a great zone entry by protecting the puck with his body, then dropped it back for Tage at the blueline. Tage, not seeing an option at the front of the net, threw a pass off the right boards for Corrigan, but he was bumped and couldn't receive the pass, instead tipping it down low for The stingray that Killed steve irwin. Irwin took the puck around the back of the net, waited for an option, and then shot through traffic in front of the net. Del Vecchio couldn't see the puck and the Whalers got on the board first. Kelowna would strike back later, though. A Tommy Outlaw penalty set up a Knights power-play goal, on the first of two such occurrences in this game. On this one, the rookie defenseman took a tripping penalty. Kelowna wasted no time on this play, getting pressure and shots on Vancouver's starting goalie, White Goodman. Forty seconds in, Theo Golury got free at the top of the faceoff circle and took a wrist shot. It missed the net, but a fortunate bounce meant the puck bounced off the end boards and came right to Gylfi Eriksson on the other side, who banged in an easy goal to tie the game at one.
This back-and-forth battle reached another level in the third period. After a Knights icing by Andrey Barbashev II, the Whalers had a faceoff in Kelowna's end. With the fourth line on the ice, they made no mistake here, keeping possession before Sabo Tage eventually fed Dario Medici at the left circle for a one-timer that beat Del Vecchio on the blocker side to put Vancouver back on top. However, the lead was short-lived, as Tommy Outlaw took another penalty, this time for interferign with Danila Zhernov. Rocco Berni won the faceoff on the power play and the Whalers penalty kill never even touched the puck on the possession, with several great passes from Kelowna's potent power play leading to a goal by Luciano Vessot to tie the game. From here, the energized Knights put on a barrage, and White Goodman was exemplary, making twelve saves in the third period to keep the score tied. With neither team able to break through again, the game headed to overtime.
The extra period was relatively uneventful, with an Irwin shot for Vancouver on a broken play being the most dangerous scoring chance in overtime, so a shootout was needed. Up first for Kelowna, Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu skated in but missed the net glove side. Whalers leading scorer Francois Breton was up next, and he made no mistake, making a quick deke before slipping the puck between the pads of Luca Del Vecchio. From here, it was all White Goodman, as he made great stops on Rocco Berni and then Andrey Barbashev II to secure the win, while Marcus Ohlsson was stopped.

3rd Star: Dario Medici (RW), VAN - 1 G, 2 shots, 7:53

The Whalers winger made the most of his limited ice time, scoring the go-ahead goal in the third period to put pressure on the Knights to come from behind.

2nd Star: The stingray that Killed steve irwin (LW), VAN - 1 G, 3 shots

Another Vancouver winger on the offensive side of the puck, kickstarting the offense with a great play in the second period to get the game's opening goal.

1st Star: Sabo Tage (RD), VAN - 2 A, 2 shots, 23:53

Tage was first overall in the S51 rookie draft for a reason, as he was a force all night, setting up both goals with heads-up play and eating minutes for a team that thrives on defensive play.

Next up, the Whalers finish their homestand with a game against Colorado, while Kelowna returns home to play the Detroit Falcons.

Special Teams Propel Knights

The Kelowna Knights came up big on special teams.  While the team did not do their best at even strength, they took advantage of the opportunities afforded to them by the Vancouver Whalers, who struggled to stay out of the box.  The Knights scored two powerplay goals on five opportunities and the penalty kill was perfect on the two times they were sent off.  LW Gylfi Eriksson had a great night with a powerplay goal and an assist on D Luciano Vessot's game tying goal.  On the other side of the ice, G Luca Del Vecchio stopped 8 shots while on the penalty kill and looked steady all night.  The penalty kill has been a sore spot for the Knights all season long as they are the only team that is below a 70% kill rate, so it was good to get it going tonight.

Whalers Win Faceoffs, Nearly Win Game

Faceoffs were nearly the undoing of the night for the Knights.  As a team, the Whalers won 45 of the 78 faceoffs in the game.  The Whalers second goal was scored just moments after C Austin Powers won the draw in the Knights zone.  After the Knights iced the puck, Powers won a faceoff against C Ryan Shepard back to Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jr.  Just seconds later, Dario Medici had his 4th goal of the season and the Whalers had a 2-1 lead.  Shepard personally had one of his worst games of the season as he was held pointless on just one shot.  He was also on the ice for both Whalers goals and struggled mightily at the dot going just 11 for 33.  Whalers C Stracimir Petrovic was matched up against him most of the night and won 23/33 faceoffs and winning 13/19 directly against Shepard.

1. Goalie Battle

Both goalies, Luca Del Vecchoi (KEL) and White Goodman (VAN), played well in this game and that is reflected in the end of regulation score of 2-2. Through three periods and one overtime period of play, including 12 minutes of power play time, each goalie only allowed 2 goals and it took a shootout to decide game. Luca Del Vecchio stopped 18 of 20 shots for a 0.900 save percentage but fell to 5-6-3 on the season after only allowing one goal in the shootout for Kelowna. White Goodman made 21 saves on 23 shots (0.913) and got the victory, his 9th of the year, by not allowing a goal in the shootout.

Stat Pack Breakdown

Knights Make Penalties Pay
In a close game like this one, it's the little things that make all the difference down the stretch for a team and the five penalties the Whalers took almost proved to be very costly, as they saw those five penalties turn into two goals. The Knights powerplay unit showed they had the Vancouver penalty kill unit figured out and that allowed them to push the game all the way to a shootout, barely losing a closely contested game. In a different game, the Knights might have been able to eek out a win over another penalty prone team.

Cellar Dwellars

The Kelowna Knights and Vancouver Whalers come into this game hoping to change their seasons around. Both teams have been hovering near the bottom of the standings for a majority of the year. Kelowna comes in with an 8-9-2 record which is good for 18 points, while the Whalers are sitting at 8-8-3 and 19 points. After the win tonight Vancouver holds an important 2-0-0 record head to head against the Knights which could be important later on for seeding purposes. After losing the first five games of the season Vancouver has been on a slight win streak lately winning 7 of their last 9 contests.

Faceoff Wizard

Stracimir Petrovic was incredible in the faceoff circle tonight winning a whopping 23 of 33 faceoffs. He would not be denied and was even heard gloating about it in the middle of the game. At one point when he lined up across from Ryan Shepard he bellowed that he could win the faceoff with his eyes closed and proceeded to close them and look around as he came up to the faceoff circle. Shepard didn't seem to appreciate that and a pushing match ensued but no penalties were enforced. To add insult to injury Petrovic laid a vicious hit on Shepard minute later all but ensuring his presence was felt that night.

Good ole Fashioned Shootout

This is Vancouver's sixth shootout of the season with a record of 2-3 in those games. Likewise, Kelowna is 3-2 in their 5 shootout games up to this point. Both clubs spot 3-3 record in shootouts after this game in six tries. Despite Vancouver's lack of shots on the night, the shots they took ended up finding the back of the net. With only 1 shot total being taken in overtime the teams moved to a shootout. The Knights missed their first shot just wide of the net and the Whalers took advantage on their try. It was all they needed as neither team scored another shootout goal.
