Here we are with Dean Colt of the New England Wolfpack, riding a four point streak in the preseason where he has managed to accumulate as many points as he did the entire season prior in only eighteen games.
With the preseason, that of course doesn't mean much since numbers tend to be inflated and usually serves as a testing ground for line combinations. Regardless however, we were able to get Dean for an interview to get his thoughts on his current production levels. Dean, with two goals and two assists in the last four games, are you excited that you may break your career season totals very easily, some are even speculating at the current rate by mid-season. What do you think, will you make it? "The Wolfpack have a single win during that span, I am more concerned about that honestly because prior we had only won once in six games. I don't know whats going on but our team is just not producing given the talent that makes up the team." No idea what's behind it? "Chemistry, it started with McZehrl being brought in and has not improved much since. We were unable to locate a proper fit for the big German and faltered quickly in the playoffs to a team that was riding a hot streak into the playoffs having found theirs. Now with this season underway, we have the production but Tennyson seems to be having some trouble." Always something, isn't it. "Yeah, you could definite say that. Its frustrating like you wouldn't believe. To put up those points and be doing well personally but the team isn't meshing right and you are losing and losing and losing. I have full faith in our GMs and I believe the ship will straighten itself out. How soon we are going to get out of this Storm, I do not know but I do hope it will be soon." What do you think needs to be done for that to change?" "Good question, I think we need to work a bit harder, be willing to block some shots and definitely play a little more offensively. I'm sure there is some line combination that will mesh and allow us unprecedented production levels until they I think we need to hunker down, it won't Pretty but I think we will get through. But It really does Burn my ass though, the fire its lighting under it. I am more driven now then I have ever been to get better and better. Every day I am learning and improving." Who do you say has been your best mentor on the team so far? Carter? Alexey? "I'd say both, they both play the game rough at a high and that is the type of player I want to be. One that players fear with the puck and without, one that'll leave bruises and take them as well. One that will viciously defend his teammates against dirty hits and goons. As you all know, the one thing I am completely unlike them in, is the ability to shoot the puck. I've never liked to honestly, I much prefer getting the puck to someone for a nice one timer or banging in a rebound but my accuracy is normally as bad as Torontos playoff chances so I don't often fire a puck on net from too far out." You have been moved up to the second line, do you feel pressure to perform with new responsibilities? "Well, I was drawing lots of top line assignments playing on the penalty kill. You learn how to play a man down and it gets easier playing at even strength. Much more defensively responsible I think because you know the smallest error will cause you a much larger issue. I am liking the time on the powerplay though, I will admit. It's been nice being able to produce and help set up our scorers. I am a big boy, so it takes a bit to move me and working on the farm from a young age I am probably stronger then most here." One last question, with the struggles where do you see New England finishing this season? "Raising the Cup, we will get things sorted. I am sure of it and we will be back to last year, dominating the league. Come the playoffs, we will have to wait and see but I am certain we will be there. We have too much depth and talent not to get this straightened out. Then I will be a bit more happy about my point totals." Thanks for your time, Dean. "Not a problem, thank you." |
