S24 Written PT#2 - 'Rookies vs. Send-downs: BeAGM'
#34

Center: Evandrus Jesster

A clear no brainer choice to make the rookie team, Evandrus Jesster was one of the top picks in the draft and has proven he was worth it with his play on the ice as well. Jesster is top 10 in scoring in the league, as a rookie, making him a rare commodity in a junior league dominated by send downs. He has 3 points over fellow rookie Robb Wind to lead the rookie scoring race right now. Jesster looks like a frontrunner for rookie of the year, making him the clear choice to start at center for the all-rookie team.

Right Wing: Robb Wind

The other top pick in the draft, Robb wind is another clear choice as a starter on the all-rookie squad. He has 24 points, 3 shy of Jesster, and is barely trailing for the rookie scoring lead. A top line featuring both Wind and Jesster is sure to give any team fits, giving the all-rookie team a fighting chance on the offensive side of the puck. Both Wind and Jesster lack some of the defensive acumen however, but should be a great duo up front.

Left Wing: Mario Nyquist

Mario Nyquist is no slouch himself, offensively. At 22 points the natural center can hold his own with the two forwards previously chosen. Nyquist has one advantage over the other two however, which is the fact that he can throw hits as well. At 32 hits, he has a more well rounded game than the previous two players, making him a great compliment to the offensive juggernauts he would be paired with. The transition from Center to Left Wing should be seamless for Nyquist.

Defense: John Matthews – Alexander Wolff

The first choice, John Matthews is a player that can help provide offense from the point, while also chipping in on the defensive side by shutting down opposing shooters. The dman leads all rookie defensemen in points this year, with 21. The next closest is 18, with his d partner for the all rookie team and one other rookie following in at 15. To compliment his offensive skills from the backend, John Matthews also boasts 26 shots blocked, one of the highest totals for rookie defensemen this season.

Alexander Wolff is a completely different player however. Tied for 3rd in scoring from rookie defensemen, the defender may seem like a biased choice for this team. Wolff, however has the defensive skills to earn a spot on the rookie team. The defensemen has chipped in 15 points this year, however the thing that makes him unique is his 67 hits. Wolff’s 67 hits are enough to lead EVERY defenseman in the league, while putting him in 4th place overall for hits this season. His physicality and scoring is backed with a willingness to put his body on the line every shift. Wolff also boasts 17 blocked shots this season, which is no slouch either.

The pairing of Matthews and Wolff would certainly be an interesting duo to watch.

Goalie: Austin Lemieux

The only rookie goalie in the league this year (according to the index) Lemieux is no world class defender, however can clearly hold his own, boasting 7 wins and a record over .500. The hope is that he won’t have to be relied on too heavily however, with some of the offensive talent the all-rookie team has.
