This is ready for grading.
Ask me anything! Preferably questions related to the SMJHL and the like, but I'll respond to oddballs as well. (Answers tomorrow might take a while due to college stuff, so please bear with me.) How instrumental was Cody Black in helping you get to where you are today? "Who?" What kind of Captain will you be? "Hopefully a good one. I've never really been in a leadership position like this before, but all I can do is try and have all the qualities one would expect from a SMJHL captain. And, uh, I know my answers are pretty brief, but I'm sure I'll get better at these whole interview things with time and practice." Who controls the music in the locker room? "We try to rotate, but Eoin usually ends up drowning it out with his bellowing. He's not that bad of a singer, but really only knows drinking songs, so the lack of variety can get a bit tiring sometimes." How has your time with the Prince George Firebirds lived up to your expectations? "These past weeks have been amazing beyond belief. I'm on the most amazing team with the most amazing teammates, and I couldn't be happier. I didn't really know what to expect on draft day, but I was sure anticipating that I'd go much lower than I did. I'm very glad that Prince George decided to scoop me up early on, I love it here." Currently with a 6-3-3 record the Firebirds are playing pretty good hockey, what areas does emphasize the most in practice? "Overall we just need to work on our puck skills, making sure we can hold onto it and keep it. Obviously scoring with a timely fashion is important, but we have some really stellar point-getters in our lineup. Staying strong through all three periods is something that I personally need to work on, but I can't really name any glaring flaws that could compromise our position near the top." In a way too soon question, who are your early SHL favorite teams? "I follow the SHL, obviously, but I have no idea which team I'd even want to consider signing with in a year or two. Winnipeg? Calgary? There are a lot more options than in juniors, and I don't really need to worry about that just yet. It's a thought provoking question, that's for sure." What does it mean to you to be the captain of your junior team? "It means that a lot of very important people think that I can lead the Firebirds to success this season. It doesn't really change anything, but there is more unseen pressure on me now to do as well as possible and to encourage my teammates as much as possible. We're like a hockey family, so hopefully it isn't going to be hard to do either of those." Any words on your defensive partner, Eoin MacGregor? "Eoin is great, if a little rambunctious sometimes. We've had such incredible chemistry since we've started practicing together, hopefully we get to stay as a pair. I'm so happy for him that he earned an A for his sweater, and Deej as well." What long term goals do you have in the SHL? "Ooh, a cup would be nice. All I can hope to really do is just play some good hockey with some great people. As per goal count and point totals and stuff like that, I'm just taking what I can get." Do you see your team making a deep playoff run this year? "Absolutely. We are definitely going to go far this season, in spite of what everyone else has to say about it. I believe that the Firebirds will do amazingly in the rest of the regular season and playoffs." Favorite moment in the SMJHL so far? "Probably when we all showed up for the first practice in PGSC. Everyone was just so happy to be there, and super energetic, I knew I was in the right place. It wasn't a particular thing that did it for me, the atmosphere when I stepped onto the ice was just electrifying." Do you feel like you can be a top captain in this league? "It doesn't matter if I think I can be a top captain, what matters is if I behave like a top captain. But to really answer the question, I've never held a leadership position like this before, so hopefully I can do well." Rank the other teams recently named captains, and where you believe you sit currently. Leadership Ability Winston Windsor Vlad McZehrl Conall Macleod Scott Robertson Individual Ability Vlad McZehrl Winston Windsor Conall Macleod Scott Robertson "Neither myself nor Conall can compare to guys who have been in the SMJHL for three seasons. I don't know any of the other new captains too well, but I do know that I have almost zero prior leadership experience. It might be pessimistic, sure, but I just really hope I do well." |
