PART 1
Today we will look at SHL S28 draft eligible prospect Xavier Laine and SMJHL S28 draft eligible prospect John Jeeples.

LW | 6’4” | 206lb | Montreal Impact - Undrafted
SMJHL S27 – 50GP, 14G, 10A, 24P, +19, 40PIM, 87H, 3SB, 14.41AMG, 1PPP</div>

Biggest strength: As a power forward the first two things that come to mind are hitting and scoring. If you were to ask Xavier he’d probably say the same, but one area of Xavier’s game that is drastically overlooked is his passing game. Although he’s not afraid to shoot the puck, Xavier is equally impressive at making a big time pass to create chances for his teammates.
Biggest weakness: Despite his large frame and being touted as a power forward Xavier’s hitting game could use some work. Although it’s true he did record 87 hits in his first full SMJHL season that total needs to reach at least 100 before he can become a true threat at the power forward position. Fortunately with time and dedication to his hitting and strength capability this should be certainly achievable.
Draft projection: steal at late 2nd, early 3rd round.
Short term potential: Montreal was lucky to land this Austrian power forward stud shortly after the draft. He paid immediate dividends in his first season in the SMJHL and should have no problem putting up similar totals as he’ll likely receive more minutes and responsibility next season.
Long term potential: Based on the small sample size thus far you have to imagine Xavier is on several teams radar as a mid to late draft steal. He has proven his commitment off the ice by regularly attending all training sessions and team meetings and if he can continue to do so moving forward there’s no doubt he’ll end up on an SHL roster in the near future.

C | 6’2” | 204lb | SMJHL Draftee</div>

Biggest strength: Most SMJHL draftees are relatively unknown and can be quite hit or miss. John is an exception to the rule. Associated with recently retired SHL’er Caboose and Ren, Jeeples enters the draft with a much higher degree of certainty that he’ll remain active in the locker room and weekly training sessions and team meetings. As for Jeeples as a player you have to admire the attention he’s made to improving his percentages at the face off dot. Most offensive chances (and defensive plays) start with a face off win and John should have no problem competing in that department.
Biggest weakness: As a playmaker John definitely carries a pass first mentality, but even playmakers are looked upon to provide the odd goal now and again. To prevent become overly one-dimensional and predictable in the offensive zone John will need to divide some attention to his scoring while still improving his passing game if he hopes to become a real offensive threat.
Draft projection: 2nd round.
Short term potential: As is always the state of the SMJHL teams are required to wave goodbye to their stars and open up key positions to youngsters looking to prove something. That should be no different this season as John should make a nice addition to the 3rd or possibly 2nd line of any team.
Long term potential: Much like Ren and Caboose before him, Jeeples should have no problem reaching the SHL draft and beyond. How soon he can make an impact in the SHL is uncertain, but what is certain is that it will happen.
