Day 12, Game 35: Colorado Mammoths vs. the Prince George Firebirds

Pre-Game</div>
Denver, Colorado â€“ After an up then down start to the season Colorado Mammoths are coming off two wins in a row, while Prince George has a 3 game win streak. The Mammoths lead the season series 2-1, a marked improvement from last season where they only managed a single win in 9 tries against the Firebirds.

The Firebirds will look for leadership from do-everything center Casper Jakobsson and powerful defensemen Hunky Monkey and Barak Obrana. And the vets are getting help from the kids as 8 PG rookies have already booked 4 or more points this season. The Mammoths are currently being paced by their top 3 defenders, Goddard, O'Dooley, and Dover. Goddard is turning heads with his start to the season leading all defensemen in scoring and having notched 10 assists in the opening 8 games. Rookies Renninger (3 game goal scoring streak) and Eichelele (points in each of last 7 games) are hoping to keep contributing.

Both teams also feature some bruisers and it wouldn't be a stretch to see Colton Hagan (29PIM) or Hunky Monkey (18 PIM) drop the gloves at some point.

Both teams came out tentatively while Waters and Rudnikova looked impenetrable. Neither goaltender allowed a rebound until midway through the 2nd. However, with both teams combining for only 7 shots in the first, despite 3 power plays, this was quickly becoming a sleepy affair.

<div align="center">2nd Period</div>
Things became chippier in the 2nd, with Colordao taking a string of penalties. Finally, on their 5th power play try, the Hylytyr NoRetornable broke through with his first of the season and the game's first night. [Image: G0AL.gif]

Pollack sends it across to Monkey who fires one on, but O'Dooley gets in the way. Hertzberg tries to come away with it but it's knocked loose by Hagan. Pollak picks up the loose puck and they set up again as he kicks it out to Monkey. He finds NoRetornable stepping in and HE SCORES! Put Hylytyr on the highlight reel and Prince George has the lead

Sim Browski was responsible for the power play that resulted in the first goal and when his next shift saw the Mammoths in a 2 goal hole he displayed his frustration on the opening faceoff with a high sticking charge.

<div align="center">3rd Period</div>
The Firebirds came out guns blazing, rifling 5 shots off in the first 30 seconds. However, much like a classic episode of the A-Team,
nothing was on target. Somehow they managed a repeat performance just before the 5 minute mark.

Inspired by their 7th penalty kill of the night, at the 14 minute mark, the Mammoths' 4th line came up big again with a goal that added some doubt to the outcome. [Image: G0AL.gif]

2-1 Firebirds at 14:13. Here's the call:

Quote:Selich has it poked away by Yvel and the Mammoths are back to full strength as Legend exits the box. They need a line change and Yvel is will dump the puck into the Firebirds zone. Six minutes left in regulation, now. Norstrom with the puck for the Birds, Eichelele pressuring him and he comes away with it. Passes it back to Goddard who sends it across to Leetch, who takes a one-timer - just wide! Eichelele recovers it behind the net and tries to sneak one in but Waters is there and kicks it away. Leetch is right on it and puts away the rebound! His first of the season and the Mammoths are alive!

From there, Colorado kept the pressure on and with 40 seconds left pulled Rudnikova for the extra skater. Looking for an opening, Dover's pass is intercepted by Selich who findsHertzberg. Hertzberg carries it end to end and dishes to Jakobsson for the empty netter. [Image: G0AL.gif]

NoRetornable's power play goal10:57. The Mammoths seemed to be weathering the storm of penalties they had taken and it seemed only a matter of time before they would start to find some offense. However, they completely lost composure following the first goal, allowing a second 30 seconds later and taking an undisciplined penalty immediately after that.

Key Stats:
Penalties and faceoffs. The Mammoths were booked for 8 offenses to the Firebirds' 3. Prince George scored their first goal on the man advantage and while Colorado's defense did an admirable job shutting down the other 7 chances, it left them with very few offensive chances. And when the Mammoths weren't in the sin bin, they still didn't seem interested in possessing the puck, as the Firebirds dominated the faceoff circle 43 to 25.

The Mammoths had their worst period of the season in the 2nd, when they took 4 penalties and managed 0 shots on net! The team did manage to block 14 shots in addition to Rudnikova's 18 saves.

You'll forgive Ben Waters for thinking he had the night off as he only faced 9 shots in total. It's hard to believe that this one was close going into the final minute.
