An unlikely matchup, three seasons in the making, starts tonight in the Challenge Cup Finals. In Season 32, the Toronto North Stars and the Portland Admirals both finished dead last in their respective conferences. Now, they meet for a chance at history, with both teams searching for their first championship.

For Portland, the championship is a shot at redemption. Last season, the Admirals reached the playoffs for the first time since joining the SHL in Season 25. The postseason was a successful one, as Portland won the Western Conference and reached the Challenge Cup Finals. However, the Admirals fell just one step short of ultimate glory, losing to the Manhattan Rage.

Meanwhile, the North Stars are looking for the holy grail which has escaped them since the league’s origin. One of the SHL’s Original Six franchises, Toronto is still searching for its first Challenge Cup. After the lows of Season 32, Toronto has rebuilt into one of the premier teams in the East. Now, they find themselves on the cusp of a celebration 35 years coming.

TASK FOUR: Who is your choice for the S35 Playoff MVP to this point? Must be 150 words.

Toronto’s S35 Challenge Cup triumph, snapping the team’s curse and earning its first title in league history, was a team effort. From the star players all the way, literally, to the back-up goalie during the finals, everyone played a part for the North Stars. However, Kristian Eriksson went above and beyond during the playoff run, and deserves recognition as playoff MVP.

Firstly, Eriksson was the most efficient offensive producer for Toronto. Despite being on the second line, Eriksson racked up 20 points, with ten goals and ten assists. He also led the team on the power play, with four goals and three assists coming on the man advantage.
Eriksson also proved valuable when it mattered most, another crucial reason he should be Playoff MVP. Five of Eriksson’s ten goals during the playoffs were game-winning goals, including the decisive goal in Game Seven of the finals. Eriksson was also named first star on three occasions during the playoffs, while getting named second or third star in three other games. Simply put, Eriksson was consistently a valuable and crucial part of Toronto’s playoff run and should be rewarded accordingly
