Hits taken is a weird stat in STHS, some of those hits are during faceoffs so you'll see it being higher for centers. In addition, it shows all hits taken, even if you continue to have the pick after it. With injuries off those hits mean nothing really.

I'm pretty sure the hits taken stat only accounts for hits in which you don't lose the puck. So the higher the number the more effective you are protecting the puck.
