It's a little more limited compared to the word gay but retard was originally a word that according to the dictionary means "to delay or impede the development or progress of" and has unfortunately been more recently used to describe people with mental disabilities. The main instance I can think of is in my nephew's chemistry notes where he wrote XXX can be used as a chemical to retard the spreading of fires.
