The Champ and Goat of the Game: Champ:Barry Batsbak was a 7th round pick in the S45 SMJHL draft, overlooked by every single team to get to the Knights. However he took his game to a whole other level in his second ever SMJHL game, scoring his first goal and assist while only playing 13 minutes of ice time. To top it all off he was 11 for 17 on the dot (64.7%) and demonstrated why you can't always rely on the scouts to pick the right players early in the draft.
Goat:Goaltending for both teams was about as bad as it can get, with Hank Scorpio and Vivian Leblanc just providing putrid performances. Scorpio stopped 14 of 18 shots for a save percentage of .778, while Leblanc stopped 25 of 28 shots for a save percentage of .893. That is not the kind of goaltending that wins you hockey games.
Interesting Facts of the Game:
This 4-3 game featured 12 total players registering a point on the scoresheet, with all the goals being scored by a different player. Of those 12 players only three of them played over 20 minutes a night, with the majority of them playing fewer than 18 minutes. 4 of the 7 players Also the only players to register two points were those who played fewer than 20 minutes a night, leading to one of those weird games where some times playing a ton of minutes is actually more counter-productive. But that could just be the SMJHL for you, and this may be something that is mitigated in the SHL when these guys come up to the big leagues.
Goal of the Game:
Surprisingly enough the goal of the game for this one happened within the first 10 seconds of the game starting. Xena won the faceoff and sent the puck to Oliver Kovacs who made a nifty move into the Kelowna Knights zone to get a breakaway chance. Vivian Leblanc attempted a desperation move to block the puck with his head down, but Kovacs saw it coming and flipped the puck over his head, then tapped it into the net while it was still airborne. That is a contender for goal of the year at this point.
