For our bonus podcast today let's look at how the Vancouver Whalers flipped the script on the St. Louis Scarecrows in the 2nd period, but still managed to lose out in OT. In the first period, the Scarecrows were running away in the shot count at 11-4. However, after some choice words from their coach, the Whalers rallied back and took over the shot lead in both the 2nd and 3rd periods at a total whopping count of 23 - 12. The Scarecrows managed to hang in there though and even scored halfway through the 2nd to take a 1-0 lead. The game remained tied into OT until Scarecrows got the jump in the first 17 seconds of the match and got the winning goal. Comment #2 Our second part of the podcast is going to look at special teams play. Or, how special teams did not play any part in this OT matchup. Both teams went 0/3 on the powerplay and were therefore perfect on the penalty kill. Goalies were sharp, and I think both teams need to go back to the drawing board to figure out how to improve their scoring. After a minor penalty to Samuel Jalopski for goalie interference in the 3rd, Shaquille Derisraka was heard swearing on the bench after missing the net on two consecutive shots. Even the matched fighting penalty at 0:37 of the 3rd brought no resolution to the game as both Carlo Russo and Steven Moyer sat for 5 minutes. Comment #3 Lets take a closer look at that lightning-quick overtime goal by the St. Louis Scarecrows. The Scarecrows came out with some fire in their bellies after struggling to put pucks on net in the 2nd and 3rd periods. Scarecrow center Steven Moyer won the first faceoff in OT and a beautiful passing sequence led to a shot on goalie Casimir Stevens, who was up to the task. Vancouver's Bernik Vrazala scooped out the rebound and tried to clear it out to the zone but shot it out of the reach of his intended target, leading to icing and another faceoff in the Vancouver zone. On the subsequent faceoff the Scarecrows won it again. Fleming gathered the puck, passed it to Hoover who one timed the puck from the top of the circle right. The puck squirted under the arm of Vancouver's goalie and across the goal line for the winner. Vancouver's poor breakout pass cost them the victory on this day |
