HALIFAX Raiders v VANCOUVER Whalers
![]() ![]() The 105th total game of the SMJHL regular season saw Halifax travel across the entire great land of Canada to rivals Vancouver. The Raiders were chasing just their second win of the season, after their first came courtesy of a 3-1 victory after a visit from Detroit 2 weeks previously. Vancouver were looking hopeful for another win in an effort to surge their way up the table early into the season.
1st Period
Vancouver kept in control of the first period, which showed with an early unsportsmanlike conduct minor to Mr Faceoffs, and his aggravation reflected in the rest of the East Canadian team. The penalty was ultimately fruitless for Vancouver and the Raiders hit back not a minute later, with Choybuk and Doskocil charged up the ice and way past the set up Whalers now-expired power play to shoot home an unstoppable goal for Stevens. The Raiders kept up their pressure as Troy Reynolds nets his first goal of his SMJHL career just seconds off of the opening goal, courtesy of assists from the top line defenders Muerto and Montgomery. Vancouver soon regained their control and this showed after a goal from Nowes dropped their deficit to only 1 goal. This game off of a well set up play and a lot of zone time for the whalers. At the end of the period the Whalers were out-shooting the Raiders 9-7.
Goals
Mikeal Choybuk (HAL) 7:07 - Assisted by Andrej Doskocil

2nd Period Halifax got off to a rough start to the second period after shakily leading the first period, going on the penalty kill thanks to a slashing call going against Choybuk just seven seconds into the period. The match returned to 5 on 5 hockey for just 30 seconds before Morgan was called down for a high-stick. The second penalty died just like the first, but the Halifax players were already a lot more fatigued than their Vancouver counterparts. This was proven after Mikulak tied the game up just five minutes into the period. Halifax hit back just a minute later with the third liner Matsson scoring his third point of the season. The goal would prove to be the game winning goal, with Vancouver, while out-shooting their rivals, unable to capitalise on any shots. Goals Petr Mikulak (VAN) 5:16 - Assisted by Trey Ward, Rudy Mentz Kristoffer Matsson (HAL) 6:34 - Assisted by Andrej Doskocil, Touncie Bitties 3rd Period The third period was relatively quiet, with all the action happening within the first few minutes. Vegeta Muerto took another penalty for roughing with the Whalers just 30 seconds into the period. Just 20 seconds after Halifax killed it, Rainbow Dash and Dylan Karlsson charged out of their own zone in what appeared to be a deja vu of the play from earlier. Dash fired it home and in what eventually proved to seal the deal for Halifax, scoring them their second win of the season. They put on an impressive display against a Vancouver team who out shot them 29-22, with McKorsy putting on an impressive display, with a 0.931SV% for the match.
