PGS S45 Game 105: HAL v VAN
#9

Comment 1:

ONE FOR OLD MEMORIES: Rainbow Dash Ices the Game

It is no secret that the Halifax Raiders are in another rebuilding year so it is no surprise that they have started shipping off some of their high TPE veterans for future assets.  One such move was the trade of Rainbow Dash.  We can look back on one of Dash's last points with Halifax: the goal that iced the game in this rare Raiders win.  The Raiders found themselves ahead 3-2 in the third period's second shift, when Rainbow Dash picked up a nifty pass from Dylan Karlsson leaving the Halifax zone.  Dash skated into the Whalers' zone and fired a goal past Casimir Stevens.  Vancouver opted to remove Stevens from the game for the remainder of the third period, but they were unable to overcome Dash's insurance goal.  Rainbow Dash would be named the third star in this, one of Dash's final games in Halifax.

Comment 2:

HIT SQUAD: Perry Morgan and Shaquille Derisraka Go Hit For Hit

It was a physical game between the Raiders and Whalers, with two players on each squad looking to out pace the other in the hit department.  Both Perry Morgan and Shaquille Derisraka made it a spirited affair with their physical play and they both ended the game with five his each.  This is not a shock coming from either player: Derisraka is currently second in the SMJHL in total hits this season and Morgan leads the Raiders in total hits.  Despite the rough play, the only penalty between the players was an accidental high sticking call to Morgan in the second period.  Both players were complimentary of the other post game, but vowed to out hit their opponent the next time the two teams meet.

Comment 3:

NOT SO POWERFUL PLAY: Halifax Penalty Kill Shuts Down Vancouver

The Raiders gave the Whalers plenty of opportunities to do damage on the power play during this game but Vancouver refused to capitalize by going scoreless on all six of their power plays.  Halifax was lead by top penalty kill tandem Mr. Faceoffs and Mikael Choybuk at forward, and Dominic Montgomery and Vegeta Muerto on the backend.  Along with a second penalty kill unit bolstered by Perry Morgan and Troy Reynolds, the Raiders were able to smother any scoring opportunities the Whalers manufactured.  When pucks did get through the penalty killers goalie Mike McKorsy came up with timely saves to keep the puck from the back of the net.  Not known as a strong team on the kill, Halifax will look to keep this up as the season progresses.
