Before Jon was a full-time hockey player, he spent one summer working on a farm back home in Ireland. This was mostly just a produce farm, growing the likes of wheat, barley, corn, strawberries, etc. There were no livestock around, except for when the owner was holding them for somebody else. Jon knew it was not something he wanted to do all his life, as the early mornings and long days were tough, but there were things he enjoyed about it as well. He learned to drive different machinery, like tractors and loaders. Learned the ins and outs of farm life and the hard work that goes into putting food on to people's tables. It gave him a massive respect for the work that it takes. One particular moment he remembers from his time on the farm was just a week or so after he started. He was driving around the farm with his boss when he saw what he though was corn. He was confused though, as it was only July and the corn should not have been that tall yet. "Wow, the corn grew a lot real fast" Jon said, and his boss responded, "That's barley son", and began laughing. JT knew it was something he wouldn't live down the rest of his time working there.
