#1

(5011 Words )

The S53 SHL entry draft is upon us and we take a deep look into the prospects that are about to make an SHL team the future home. Each prospect has the potential to make an impact in this league at some point. We take a look at their linemates and playoff stats to get an overall look at them. Some high end prospects are not in this jarticle for no reason in particular.

Forwards:

Rocco Berni - C

Likely to be among the top picks in the draft, One sought after Centre will likely be a hot pick. In 50 games in the J this season he had 6 goals, 16 assists for 22 points. In 81 power play minutes he had 6 power play points. In the Face-off circle he went 45.58 percent taking 746 draws for the knights. In the post season Rocco played in 13 Games, he managed 1 goal and 5 assists for 6 points with no Power play time.

Note:
Kelowna line 3: C: Rocco Berni / LW: Jaska Seppala / RW: Nicklaus Engel
* Roocos Line mates were fellow rookie Jaska Seppala and veteran Nicklaus Engle. Sepala had 8 points this season while Engle had 16. The line was tasked with 20 percent game time and a defensive primary role.
* Rocco was also shooter #2 int the Penalty shot list for Kelowna.
* His role in the Post season did not change.

5 star player Potential rating : 5 Star

Final word: The making of a Solid Center. Berni Will be a solid pick and any team that gets him is getting a high potential/ Elite Centerman.

Jaska Seppala - LW

Another high ranking prospect on the draft list, Jaska has made it known that they have a desire for a Buffalo or Chicago destination at the draft. That might have him take a hit as Buffalo have 3rd overall and 5th Overall and Chicago sits at 11th overall. If Buffalo are targeting a different position he may fall out of the top 3 he is slated to go. That said he had a relatively quiet rookie season as he had 4 goals and 4 assists for 8 points and a - 7 in the +/-. His Power play time was limited to 17 minutes and 2 power play points. Jaska had a good post season for a rookie. He played 13 games and had 3 goals and 4 assists for 7 points.

Note:
Kelowna line 3: C: Rocco Berni / LW: Jaska Seppala / RW: Nicklaus Engel
* Sppala Line mates were fellow rookie Rocco Bernita and veteran Nicklaus Engle. Berni had 22 points this season while Engle had 16. The line was tasked with 20 percent game time and a defensive primary role.
* His role in the Post season did not change.

5 star player Potential rating : 5 Star

Final Word: Seppala would probably be a top 3 pick regardless of who was picking if not for comments made about where he wants to go and what everyone else “ can do to his nether region” A high end prospect, you can’t go wrong if your Buffalo and Chicago.

Jimmy Wagner - RW

An expected top 5 to 8 pick in this draft, Wagner did well in his rookie season. In 50 games he had 6 goals and 8 assists for 14 points. 25 Power play minutes tho only produced 1 point. Jimmy’s Post season was a rough one as the rookie played 11 games and only registered 1 assist.

Notes :
Carolina line 3: C: Stirling MacTavish / LW: Jimmy Wagner / RW: Velveteen Dream
* Wagner shared a line with 2 verterans in MacTavish and Dream. MacTavish had 33 Points and Dream had 29 points. The 3rd line was tasked with an offensive role with a slight physical style.
* The line remained the same in the Playoffs but played less physical and more defensive.

5 star player Potential rating : 5 Star.

Final Word: Wagner is a top 5 pick, the only reason we have him in the 5 to 8 category is the deferment in this draft and teams that may be looking for a d man instead. Highly talented and a great upside.

Edward Williams - C

Williams had an outstanding rookie season as he was tied for 1st in rookie scoring with Danny White of Anchorage. His 50 games saw him produce 14 goals and 18 assists for a solid 32 points. His 10 Power play Points were had in 141 minutes of Power play time. He went 46.39 percent in the face-off circle in 1121 draws. That scoring pace however took a hit in the post season as in 10 games he only managed 3 assists and saw no Power play time. His face-off percentage got slightly better in the post season as he went 49.73 % in 183 draws. He is someone we see in the top 5 of this draft.

Notes:
Detroit Line 2: C:Edward Williams / LW: Cal Labovitch / RW: Frederick Wanesly
* Williams line mates are 2 solid veterans Lobovitch and Wanesly. Labovitch had a 50 point season and Wanesly had a 16 point season. They played 30 percent of the game and had a very offensive role.
* His line had a slight defensive increase in their role in the playoffs.
* Named to the SMHJL All- Rookie Team

5 star player Potential rating : 5 Star

Final word: Williams had a great rookie season. But also needs to be noted that he played on a great team, a great line and that may have contributed to his success. That said. High end Centerman in our book. High potential, great pick.

Ethan Duncan - C

A projected top 10 pick, Duncan had a quiet rookie season as he tried to find hid feet in the J. His 3 goals and 5 assists, 8 points, in 50 games may make some people over look him but his 50.65 percent in the circle in 397 draws is impressive. His post season lasted 13 games which saw him match his season goals number at 3 while adding 1 assist for 4 points. He took 120 face-offs winning a whopping 60%.

Notes:
Kelowna Line 4: C: Ethan Duncan / LW: Oscar Cordero / RW: Antti Antinen
* Ethan played 10 percent of the game on the 4th line with Veteran Cordero who had 7 points and fellow rookie Antinen who had 9 points. The line played a full defensive role.
* His Role Did not change in the playoffs.

5 star player Potential rating : 4.5 Star

Final Word: Duncan may be looked at as just outside the Elite of elite prospects but in reality he can not be counted out. While we have him at 4.5 star potential he can be a 5 star no doubt. The hit against him is that he played a 4th line role with limited ice time. Is there potential, we definitely think so. Time will tell but we are still pretty high on him.

Chris Cerullo - C

Colorados top scoring rookie during the regular season, Cerullo had 10 goals and 8 assists in 50 games. His 151 power play minutes saw him pick up 4 power play points. He saw limited time in the face-off circle taking only 51 draws and winning 47.06 percent. His post season was short lived as he only got 6 games. In those games he had 2 goals and an assist for 3 points. 22 power play minutes rendered 1 power play point. Cerullo took 10 draws in the playoffs winning 40 percent.

Notes:
Colorado Line 2 :C: Simothy Drunkebird / LW: Sven Svenson / RW: Chris Cerullo
* Cerullo shared his line with Veteran Centerman Drunkebird who had 23 points and fellow rookie Svenson who had 17 points. They played a full Offensive Role.
* His line changed in the post season as he was put on the 3rd line with Drunkebird and new lineman, Fellow rookie Ragnar Skallagrimsson.

5 star player Potential rating : 5 Star

Final word: Fire. There is just something about Cerullo that has me wondering if he won’t move up into the top 10. While we have him slotted in the 10 -13 range there is a strong chance we see him in the 8- 10 spot as well.

Burlok Sulfurgold - RW

Another Detroit prospect with more than 10 points. Most likely a late 1st rounder. Burlok had 5 goals and 7 assists in 50 games for 12 points. The big winger had 27 Power play minutes but did not register a point on the man advantage. His 10 playoff games saw him collect a goal and 2 assists for 3 points. One of those came on the man advantage, which he was on for 4 minutes.

Notes:
Detroit Line 3: C: Reid Sutherland / LW: Burlok Sulfurgold / RW: Paddy Kane-Reilly II
* Playing only 15 percent of each game, Burlock played with fellow rookie linemates Paddy Kane-Reilly II, who had 7 goals and 14 assists for 21 points, and Reid Sutherland, who had 6 goals and 10 assists for 16 points. His line ran an offensive role.
* In the Post season he was placed on the 4th line with linemates Luke McMaster and Cassidy Lhotsky. The role was also offensive but with a slight defensive touch.

5 star player Potential rating : 5 Star.

Final word: Curious on this one. Burlok played 3rd line on a great team with good linemates. Th one thing not mentioned about him is his 71 hits. There seems to be a power forward in the making and we see him in the 15-18 range.

Reid Sutherland - C

Most likely a late 1st early second rounder, Reid had a solid rookie season in Detroit. 6 goals and 10 assists saw his 16 points saw him sit 6th in Detroit rookie scoring. He had 14 Power play minutes but only registered a shot and no points. That said, Reid took 989 draws and won 54.20 percent of them. His 10 playoff games saw him collect 2 goals and 2 assists for 4 points. His Face-off percentage remained solid as well in the extended season as he won 53.44 percent of his 189 draws.

Notes:
Detroit Line 3: C: Reid Sutherland / LW: Burlok Sulfurgold / RW: Paddy Kane-Reilly II
* Playing only 15 percent of each game, Reid played with fellow rookie linemates Paddy Kane-Reilly II, who had 7 goals and 14 assists for 21 points, and Burlok Sulfurgold, who had 5 goals and 7 assists for 12 points. His line ran an offensive role. Reid also played on the teams second penalty kill unit with Cal Labovitch.
* In the post season Reid had a new winger on his line as Zoltan Topalo replaced Burlok Sulfurgold. The role was remained offensive but with a slight defensive touch.

5 star player Potential rating : 5 Star

Final word: Reid, Reid, Reid. The all Rookie line in Detroit played well centered by this guy. Definitely a high potential player. A late 1st round, early 2nd round is what we expect for him. Playing on a team like Detroit, his development is all but assured so the team picking him may just be getting a steal at this spot.

Zoltan Topalo - LW

3rd in Rookie Scoring ( Danny White and Edward Williams tied for 1st), 2 points behind team mate Williams, Zoltan had 10 goals and 20 assists for 30 points in 50 games. His 134 power play minutes saw him register 11 power play points. Zoltan continued his production in the Post season scoring 1 goal and 7 assist in 10 games. His 8 points had him 6th in team scoring in the playoffs. Despite that we see him getting drafted in the 2nd round.

Notes
Detroit Line 2 : C: Edward Williams / LW: Jmac NCheese / RW: Zoltan Topalo
* Zoltan was on the teams second line and played an average of 30 percent of games. He also played on the second power play unit. His regular line mates were fellow rookie Edward Williams, who tallied 14 goals and 18 assists, and Jmac NCheese, who scored 17 goals and 128 assists.
* In the playoffs Zoltan was on the third line where he averaged 15 percent game time and the role was remained offensive but with a slight defensive touch.
* Named to the SMHJL All- Rookie Team

5 star player Potential rating : 5 Star

Final Word: I like him. That’s what I keep hearing in GM meetings. He has a ton of upside as far as production. He could very well be a first round pick but given the D men in the draft as well and team needs, I expect a second round selection for this guy.

Sven Svenson - LW

Most likely a second round pick, the Colorado Raptors Left winger was second in team rookie scoring with 6 goals and 11 assists in 50 games. His 17 points was 10th in team scoring. Svenson had 142 minutes on the Power play and registered 3 points on it. His 6 post season games saw him score 2 goals and add an assist for 3 points. His 22 power play minutes saw him register a point.

Notes:
Colorado line 2 : C: Simothy Drunkebird / LW: Sven Svenson / RW: Chris Cerullo
* Sven played on Colorados 2nd line and saw about 35 percent average game time. His line mates were Drunkebird, who registered 11 goals and 12 assists for 23 points and fellow rookie Cerullo who registered10 goals and 8 points. Sven got 1st line power play minutes. He played an offensive role on his line.
* He had the same line and role in the Playoffs.

5 star player Potential rating : 5 star

Final word: Sven Svenson. 17 points in 50 games is nothing to laugh at for a rookie. One thing that would be a positive is his power play numbers getting a little better. He is a great potential player but we would like to see him be more of a clutch guy, which he may very well become as he develops into what we expect to be a solid SHL player.

William Hartmann - LW

Vancouvers first Prospect on this list Hartman is looking at being a Mid to three quarter 2nd round pick. In 50 games Hartman had 4 goals and 3 assists for 7 points. He spent 119 minutes on the Power play but only registered 9 shots. His 6 post season games saw him collect a goal and an assist for 2 points.

Notes
Vancouver line 2: C: Lligma Broomstick / LW: Marcus Ohlsson / LW: William Hartmann
* Hartman shared a line with fellow rookie Broomstick , 5 goals and 7 assists for 10 points, and veteran Ohlsson, 19 goals and 20 assists for 39 points. Their line played 35 percent of game time and ran an offensive style. Hartman also played second power play unit and was an extra forward selection.
* His playoffs saw him remain on the same line and same role
*
5 star player Potential rating : 5 Star

Final Word: Hartman plays with a ton of hart. A character guy who does not shy away from the physical game. While point production was not his call sign he definatley Brought some physical play and with development we can see a strong power forward.

Lucas Hellquist - RW

Hellquist looks like a massive star shinning in a Halifax ( now Maine ) locker room. This rookie made a statement as he scored 9 goals and added 21 assists for 30 points, 4th best among rookies. The 163 power play minutes saw him collect 6 power play points. His playoffs were much more subdued as we managed 1 assist in 6 games.

Notes:
Halifax line 2: C: Bjornoson Bjornosonson / LW: Lucas Hellquist / RW:Julien Villeneuve
* Hellquist shared a line with veteran Bjornosonson who had 13 goals and 35 assists for 48 points., and veteran winger Villeneuve who collected 15 goals and 16 assists for 31 points. The trio averaged 30 percent of ice time with a strong focus for offence. Hellquist also got time on the second power play unit.
* In the Playoffs Hellquist was moved to the opposite wing while Villeneuve was moved to Center. The new addition to the line was Marty Sertic. They Averaged 30 percent of ice time with an offensive focus. Hellquist remained on the second Power play unit.

5 star player Potential rating : 5 star

Final word: Any time you end up top 10 in rookie scoring you will have expectations thrust upon you. The potential level on this guy is high and we expect his ceiling to get higher. This may be the one guy that busts the mock draft.

DEFENSE:

Ambacas Cuddles

Cuddles finished 10th in rookie scoring as he registered 1 goal and 20 assists in 50 games. The rookie D man was a plus 14 in the +/- which is impressive for a D man. In 12 power play minutes he registered 2 points. In 11 Post season Games Cuddles had 2 goals and 5 assists for 7 points. He was a plus 2. A top 3 pick could go 1 Overall.

Notes:
Carolina 2nd pair: Wyatt Ruschkoff / Ambacas Cuddles
* These two defensmen averaged about 30 percent of game time and ran a defensive only style. Offense was on the back burner. Cuddles was used as an extra man on the penalty kill.
* In the post season Carolina changed nothing with this pair keeping them intact.
* Named to the SMHJL All- Rookie Team

5 star player Potential rating : 5 Star

Final word: Most likely the 1st defensman to come off the board. Time will tell but there is a ton of potential here for teams needing high caliber defensmen. Give him time, he’ll get there.

Erben Kasius

5th in rookie Scoring and a serious top 5 pick, Kasius registered 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 points in 50 games. Not bad for a rookie D man. He also finished with a + 4 . Urban played in 17 post season games on the way to the finals. During that stretch he collected 2 goals and 7 assists for 9 points and finished a -1.

Notes:
St.Louis 2nd pair: Luc-Pierre Lespineau-Lebrunette / Erben Kasius
* This pair do 35 percent ice time and ran a defence first style, they also took some offensive chances when the opportunity arose. Kasius also got 2nd pair Powerplay unit time and 2nd pair penalty kill time.
* In the playoffs the scarecrows kept this unit together as they were productive. Nothing changed.
* Named to the SMHJL All- Rookie Team

5 star player Potential rating : 5 star.

Final word: Again, if you finish top 10 in rookie scoring, a lot is expected, but what if you do it as a defensman….Well, I would say the expectations are higher. If someone can challenge for being the first Defenseman of the board it would be Erben. If he’s not the first, he will be the second.

Jack Kanoff

Kanoff is a solid top 10 pick. In 50 games he scored 7 goals and added 13 assists for 20 points, just missing out on top 10 in rookie scoring. He finished as a plus 2. In 10 playoff games Jack scored 4 goals and 4 assists for 8 points. He was a + 8 in the +/- . On the Power play he spent 27 minutes and registered 3 goals and an assist for 4 points.

Notes:
Detroit 1st Pair: Jack Kanoff / Guy O'Shea
* Paired with a 2nd season veteran, these two carried 40 percent of ice time. While they played primarily defensive they also took offensive chances. Kanoff also had second power play unit time and second unit penalty kill time.
* The playoffs saw Kanoff placed on the 2nd pair with Magnus Liljestrom and play 35 percent of ice time while running almost a balanced offence/defense style. He retained his second pairing power play and penalty kill unit time.

5 star player Potential rating : 5 star

Final Word: We do expect Kanoff to go top 10. He’s clearly shown he can handle responsibility as he handled 1st line defence duties in the J. The expectation is that he’ll do the same once he gets up to the SHL. Until then, Potential is high on his guy.

Magnus Liljeström

It looks like the 1st Overall pick will be more and more like Magnus. The Detroit rookie scored 4 goals and 13 assists for 17 points. He finished a + 9 in the +/-. In the post season he went a point a game as he had 2 goals and 8 assists for 10 points in 10 games. He also finished a + 5.

Notes:
Detroit 2nd pair : Magnus Liljestrom / Khabib Nurmagomedov
* Paired with veteran defensman Nurmagomedov, the pair played 40 percent ice time on average. They ran a balanced style of offence and defence. Liljestrom had penalty kill time on the first unit.
* The post season saw Liljestrom remain on the second unit with new partner Jack Kanoff. The 2 played 35 percent of ice time while running almost a balanced offence/defense style. He retained his second pairing penalty kill unit time but this time saw him added to the second power play unit.

5 star player Potential rating : 5 star

Final Word: A sought after Prospect. Much is expected of this guy and there is a great chance he goes early, like 1 Overall early. Can’t go wrong to be honest. Great prospect with high potential, the only thing is would you want him over the other 2 high defenseman picks?

Jukka Timonen

Jukka finished 8th in rookie scoring as he amassed 10 goals and 11 assists for 21 points. He did finish as a - 7 . He also collected 9 power play points in 157 power play minutes. His post season was 10 games which he scored 4 goals and 3 assists for 7 points and a - 2 in the playoffs.

Note:
Newfoundland 2nd pair: Jukka Timonen / Jakob Hamr
* This pair played 34 percent ice time with a balanced style of play. Timonen also played first power play unit and second penalty kill unit
* In the post season Timonen was moved up to the 1st pair with partner Disisde Dayudie. The played a huge 50 percent ice time with a higher focus on offence. Timonen had first Power play and Penalty kill unit time.

5 star player Potential rating : 5 Star

Final Word: Jukka did well as a rookie in the J. I would guess a late first round, early second round, but more towards the late first. You can’t go wrong with a pick like this. He’s got the potential and the desire.

Bradley Barkov

Barkov had a rough rookie season as he scored 2 goals and added 8 assists for 10 points. That’s not the rough part. The -14 in the +/- category is what may catch some GMs eye. We see him as a second round pick. The potential is there, now it needs to develop and we think it will. He had 143 power play minutes and amassed 6 power play points. The post season for him was a complete switch. In 6 games he scored 2 goals and 3 assists for team leading 5 points. 2 of those points were on the power play as he had 21 minutes on the man advantage.

Notes:
Colorado 3rd pair: Bradley Barkov / Glen Anders
* The duo averaged 20 percent ice time and had a defensive focus but still took offensive chances when they could. Barkov had time on the second power play unit and the second penalty kill unit.
* The playoffs saw Barkov go up to the second Line with new partner Heat Siecker. Averaging 35 percent ice time with the same focus he had on the third pair. Barkov remained on the second power play and penalty kill units.

5 star player Potential rating : 5 Star

Final Word: Barkov time on the third pair was ideal for showcasing his talent. Overall he is a solid Defenseman and any team will be happy to have him. However, not being in a more dominant role may cause some GMs to be hesitant in taking him early. Regardless, we see his name getting called somewhere in the middle of the second round.

Valentín Kalashnikov

Halifax docent often have much to smile about but Valentin is definitely one good reason to start. He amassed 4 goals and 11 assists for 15 points. His - 7 is expected but acceptable. In 141 power play minutes he collected 5 points. His post season lasted 6 games but he collected 4 assists and was 3rd in team scoring with 4 points. 2 of those came in his 14 power play minutes.

Notes:
Halifax 1st pair: Abel Skinner / Valentin Kalashnikov
* This pair carried a solid load for Halifax as they averaged 42 percent of ice time with a heavy focus on offence. Kalashnikov also had second power play unit times well as first penalty kill unit time.
* The post season saw him go to the second pair with partner Blake Feaux. They averaged 37 percent ice time with a balanced focus. Valentin Kalashnikov remained on the second power play unit and the first penalty kill unit.

5 star player Potential rating : 5 Star

Final Word: Kalashnikov Showed he has the talent, even though Halifax/Maine struggled to compete with teams. The overall perception is that of a solid Defenseman. A workhorse in his rookie season, this young talent has the potential to be a surprise once the draft is all over.

Toki Wartooth -

Detroit has another prospect on this list as Wartooth ( seriously a cool name ) scored 1 goal and added 13 assists for 14 points. He was a + 6 in +/-. He did manage 1 power play point in 3 power play minutes. His post season not very good as he went pointless in 10 games and a - 7 in those game.

Notes:
Detroit 3rd Pair: James Brown / Toki Wartooth
* The duo averaged 15 percent ice time where the majority of their focus was on defense. Wartooth also got time on the second penalty kill unit.
* His roles and ice time remained the same in the post season

5 star player Potential rating : 5 Star

Final word: Toki toki! The Wartooth from Detroit took his third pair position and made something of it during the season. 15 percent ice time is not huge to showcase yourself but finishing with 14 points and a +6 can help. That said, yes there are some unanswered questions. Like can he handle big games. His playoff production hurt his stock a little but time will tell. We figure after tasting the post season this season he’ll be much better prepared for next season. That said, he is a high potential prospect who are saying will hear his name called in the second round, and then go on to be a solid defenseman and a great pick

That’s it for the prospects we are looking at. I just want to say this is just my point of view. The players taken were based on TPE ( I removed the GMS ) and the rest I filled in from stats and what not so take what was written with a grain of salt. I think this draft class overall is going to be great so wherever you end up, congrats, and enjoy.
