S52 Award Nominations - Jeff Dar Award & Aidan Richan Trophy

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to our second set of nominations for the S52 SHL Awards. As you might have heard we are trying a new approach this season, where we will be announcing the candidates for each Award spread out over the span of about a week. We are planning to release two sets of nominees each day with the actual Awards Ceremony following right after we are done, so there will be no extra delay compared to how this has been done in the past.

In case you have missed it, you can read up on the first set of nominees here. Make sure to check back each day for more Award Nominations!

Okay so let’s get to it! Today we are excited to announce the Season 52 Award Nominees for the Jeff Dar Award and the Aidan Richan Trophy…

Jeff Dar Award

The Jeff Dar Award is one of the most coveted Awards among Forwards and is handed out to the league’s best two-way player. It has also been one of the most hotly discussed Awards in recent years, with lots of different stats taken into account and criteria being used, which both the voters and the public often weigh quite differently. There also have been some prominent players and their supporters who love to make their case for the Award very loudly, so let’s see what they have to say this time! This seasons nominees for the Jeff Dar Trophy are…

Cameron Carter II of the Chicago Syndicate syndicate @Boomcheck

Yeah, so about those vocal people and their supporters… Is there anyone whose name has been more closely associated with the Dar Award in recent years than CCII, even in years where he wasn’t even nominated? This year however he made it clear, not just with words but also with performance on the ice, that his name needs to be on the ballot. His 255 Hits are a record breaking number and he combined them with 51 points for a dominant Power Forward performance.

Lil Manius of the New Orleans Specters Specters @Bonk

Lil Manius finished the season with a strong 43 points, 21 of them Goals, and 190 Hits, but his real strengths lie in the advanced stats. His Corsi of 55% and Relative Corsi of 5.86 are among the best in the league and he is one of only a handful of Forwards with more Steals than Turnovers, making him one of the best forwards in his own-end in the entire league, who can also throw the body around and rack up points.

Viktor Marius of the Buffalo Stampede Stampede @karey

More than a few people have thought that Viktor Marius has his best years behind him but here he is again, back on the ballot for the Award that he has already won and was nominated for multiple times in the past. One of the best power forwards of his generation, Marius rebounded from a 37-point season with a 46 point campaign to go along with his 227 Hits. Manius & Marius don’t just share certain similarities when it comes to their name but regarding their stats as well because just like his Specters counterpart, Marius also has one of the best Corsi percentages in the league at about 55% and is one of the few forwards with more Steals than turnovers.

Congratulations to all the nominees for the Jeff Dar Award! There were a total of 12 players who received votes so don’t be too sad if you didn’t make it in, your name probably still came up in the discussions!

Aidan Richan Trophy

Now on to our next Award… The Aidan Richan Trophy is awarded to the leagues Most Improved Player. Sometimes it goes to a young player who has just grown into a superstar, sometimes it goes to a veteran who after years of mediocrity has finally broken out as one of the leagues best, but there often is a good amount of healthy discussion around this Award. This year, our nominees for the Aidan Richan Trophy are…

Nikolai Evans of the Tampa Bay Barracuda Barracuda @ztevans

Coming out of one of the more prestigious player agencies in the SHL, Nikolai Evans didn’t have the start to his career that he might have envisioned, stringing together a couple of mediocre seasons with a career high of only 27 points in S50 and a very sup-par S51 campaign that saw him score a mere 19 points. All this came to an end this year however, Evans scored 43 points, making him one of the most dangerous defensemen in the league despite the fact that he was playing on one of the weaker teams around and his 17 goals were first among all blueliners.

Steven Moyer of the San Francisco Pride pride @CanadianDuck

Unlike Evans, Steven Moyer already had some very decent seasons under his belt prior to this year, scoring 43 and 44 points over the last two years. But it was Season 52 where he went from Good to Superstar, racking up 55 points which put him second in league scoring. Other players might have had a bigger jump in points than Moyer compared to their previous best, but nobody who was considered for this Award ended up higher than him.

Michael Scarn of the Buffalo Stampede Stampede @Trautner

Michael Scarn had very slowly been working his way up over the last few seasons, stringing together seasons with 23, 24, 24 and 30 points respectively. But his rise went from slow to meteoric this year, when he improved his point total by exactly 50%, jumping from 30 to 45 points. Scarn hit the net 20 times in S52, making him the best goalscorer on a deep Buffalo Stampede team and one of the better pure offensive players in the league.

Congratulations to all the nominees for the Aidan Richan Trophy! There was a total of 10 people who received votes and this was one of the closest categories in terms of the voting, so sadly some undoubtedly deserving people had to miss out here. We wish you the best of luck for next year and in the future!

This is it from the Awards Committee for today, stay tuned for more Nominees to come tomorrow and over the next few days!
