The real powerplay


Hockey is a game which is often won and decided by the players not on the ice and by this I mean looking at who have got themselves in trouble and sitting in the penalty box. Looking back at this game, the Berserkers were clearly the better team in killing the powerplay and capitalizing on their own. Two of their three goals were when they had the man advantage, with Livius and LeGrande on the right end of them. On the other side, the Berserkers accumulated 6 minor penalties but made sure the Scarecrows were not able to score on any of them. So work on those special teams, they really have an effect!


Momentum


This was a tale of teams with different types of momentum and energy coming into the game. The Newfoundland Berserkers were definitely riding high on momentum with a 5-1 record, while the St. Louis Scarecrows were in a small slump and a 3-2-1 record. The Berserkers showed their true energy and momentum and were able to be the team doing the damage in the final period and sealing their 3-2 win. Each game in the season is a tough battle and sometimes all that matters is who has the energy and drive to go all the way to the final whistle and in this game it was Newfoundland. Everything was still in play in the final period, and the Berserkers made it count.


The Story of Jukka


In every game there is always one player who sticks out and who makes a difference. Thankfully in this game it was also recognized by the voters and Jukka Timonen was voted the first star of the game. Timonen made a difference everywhere he went on the ice. He was able to score the first goal of the game and the only even strength goal for Newfoundland. He also had a positive plus and minus rating, which is good for a defenseman when they shipped two goals. Also the mad man recorded over 30 minutes of ice time, which I think should be illegal. He was literally everywhere on the ice and really at all times. Timonen will hope to carry some of the load for the Berserkers going forward.
