Podan Podanović’s first team building experience of his career was not a typical or expected event, game, or exercise. Arriving directly from Plzeň, Czechia in a full American flag jump suit, chock full of beer and excitement, Podan’s enthusiasm was not met in kind by the benevolent Detroit TSA.
Expecting to suit up for the first Simulation Major Junior Hockey League preseason exhibition of the season, and of his career, later that night, Podan was held by US Customs and questioned about the contents of his carry on and checked baggage. Arriving with a duffel full of his goalie gear and two rolling bags filled with Pilsner Urquell, the rookie spent 5 hours explaining to US Visa & Green Card agents why I.C.E. should be disbanded, eventually opening his bag and sharing a couple rounds with the boys (in blue). Unfortunately, in a misunderstanding based on events from his childhood and upbringing, Podan did not realize that a sizable amount of beer and bringing no clothing or personal items did NOT qualify for entry into the country. Fortunately, his teammates were able to come help get things sorted out. Yan Dolff, who also tried to enter the country under the pretense of bringing a sizable amount of beer and no clothing or personal items qualified you, was able to sort things out, and also have a few rounds with the boys (in blue), but unfortunately was not able to grant Podan his freedom until after game time. Still - the experience was bonding for the team, as they helped Podan explain his misunderstanding. Look for chemistry with the other net minders this season, and Podan learns more about his cultural differences. |
