Its that time of the season again and the NWJHL is a buzz with names of players that could be packing their bags as the NWJHL Trade Deadline fast approaches. With several teams looking for the final piece that will put them over the top for a Four Star Cup run and others looking to turn their struggling season around, the rumor mill is spinning fast.
Vancouver Whalers
Reports out of Vancouver are the Whalers could move one of Shawn Swerin or Skip Boyd (maybe both). But the main prize will be who lands their Captain Dave Smith. While everyone says he isn't on the market they said the same thing about Caleb Reay last season. Expect offers to pour in and Smith to go to the highest bidder.
Detroit Falcons
The Falcons are likely to continue to shop Brandon Donini as word continues to be that management remains disappointed with his off ice theatrics this season. (Including his suspension) Rising star Finnegan Larsson could fetch a nice return for Detroit but my sources say he won't be moved, still send those offers anyway and keep things interesting around here.
Kelowna Knights
The Knights sit at the bottom of the League and without a happy Goalie at the moment. Expect Winters to be dealt any day now as the Knights start next year's rebuild. The Knights need to start thinking long term and sell off in a firesale now before teams move on to other pieces. If they load up on picks today they can get a head start on next season's team.
Montreal Impact
Montreal has been shopping hard for a shakeup to their disappointing season. A recent source said no player is off the table including former first overall pick Roman Schultz. Rehn Miller and Simon Sayez would fetch nice returns as well. Expect Montreal to roll the dice that this is their year and go all in. They're likely in the running for every big name player available (and even some that aren't) Expect big names like Roman Schultz to generate a lot of interest around the League. Dave Smith and a 2nd for Roman Schultz and a 3rd was recently shot down by Montreal but could be revisited as the Deadline draws near. Certainly expect guys like Baldauf and Smirnov to be available as teams look for help on the blueline going into the post season.
Prince George Firebirds
The Firebirds remain a team lost and confused but with some work they could go either way. Management has to make the decision and decide if this season is worth going all in for or if they should be sellers at the deadline instead. Either way expect Harris and Gibson to be moved by the end of the week.
Chicago Hitmen
And finally Chicago. The likely destination for Winters in a swap for the Sex Panther, Chicago is also expected to sell some highly coveted talent like third overall pick Benoit Fortescue. As well as: Kovalchuk, Stamkos and Mountz and Bobby.
Its shaping up to be an exciting week in the NWJHL. Be sure to check back for all the latest trade rumors and updates.
