S59 PT #5 - An Unexpected Surprise
|
![]() Awards Committee S15, S16, S22 Challenge Cup Champion
I think the most unexpected event in SHL history, at least in my humble opinion, was the S17 Challenge Cup playoffs. At that time I was on the Edmonton Blizzard. We had been coming of our second cup in a row and third in 4 seasons so obviously we were going into the season and the playoffs as heavy favourites. It almost felt inevitable that we would win again. Enter the Los Angeles Panthers. The Panthers weren't really expected to do much damage. They had a decent offence and a few decent players but were nothing special. Suddenly their inactive starter, Fabien Furburg decided to go on an absolute tear. This inactive pulled the team past the Blizzard and helped them win the West, ending with a Challenge Cup victory. In many ways, Wasty sold his soul for an unstoppable inactive goaltender. In my opinion, there hasn't been anything in the SHL I can consider more unexpected than an inactive winning a cup by themselves.
