The LaFleur family union is traditionally a small gathering at a lake somewhere in the forests of British Columbia. This year, however, was a special exception. Accompanying Richard LaFleur to the lake this year is his girlfriend from Calgary. His mother didn't seem too impressed, and his dad kept muttering something about "bad berta beef" under his breath. Regardless, most of the small LaFleur family was there. Aunts and Uncles, Nephews whipping around, a Cousin that lit himself on fire, the spirit was festive at the lake. There was a moment, later into the evening, where Richard was standing alone on the dock, gazing out at the last ripples of light bouncing off the surface of the water before the sun set behind the mountains. His father came from behind him and offered him a beer. They cracked them open and touched cans, exchanging a silent nod in the process. No words were spoken, but none need be said. Life, like Hockey, is best enjoyed with those you consider your family. Whether by blood, or by the relationships you build on and off the ice, the company of those you love will always lift you higher.
"Uncle Rich! Come on, we've got water guns!" came a small voice from the shore. "Holy fuck they have water guns" Richard gasped. "They do" his dad replied. |
