In the land of New York, you have to go huge to really make any noise on the scene. There is just so much to do around here.
However, management has seen some consistencies at play here. You're either a sports fan or not, and so there is no changing that ultimately. Nobody is going to suddenly buy a ticket because they saw that some band is going to perform a couple songs before the puck drop. If you don't want to watch hockey, that cost just isn't worth it. Plus, ultimately, the team has been pretty bad lately and is just turning a corner toward profits so the budget really didn't grow much year to year. This is a team that has been around for a long time, has a dedicated fan base, and at this point is handling a PR nightmare as they watch a top young defenseman again choose Chicago over them. Realistically, the best we can do for the fans is give them an opportunity to let out some frustrations, not throw a party that we've had it rough and also lost top picks now. So we'll go for a more muted opening ceremony. Maybe we'll get one of those old cars and sledgehammer kind of things, let people paint it, smash it, let it all out. It's been a hard few years in Manhattan, but we can let it out now and move forward into the better times. An old man's dream ended. A young man's vision of the future opened wide. Young men have visions, old men have dreams. But the place for old men to dream is beside the fire.
